Remember back when my dad used to own one when i was a kid, and when we went up to my grandmother and grandfather which is like 200 miles and usually takes like 4-5 hrs to travel, and when we just floored it all the way it only took like 2 hrs lol, good times, wish we never sold that car, i usually dont like BMW but this 540 is a different story.
Holy fuck shit thats amazing. How is the reliability on e34 540i's? And the M60 engine in general, also fuel economy xD. Im looking to buying this as a first or an e39 540i, but I love the e34 exhaust and styling over the e39. Would you recommend this as a first for someone who wants to fix their self and upgrade.
Thanks! If your not familiar with BMW's I would start out with a E36 3 series. The inline 6's are much more forgiving then the M60's and cheaper in general. There were only 1500 6 speed E34 540's produced for north america so they are very hard to find.
spdrmns I recently did find out only so few 6 speed were made but I also wouldnt mind an automatic. Or even a manual 535i, what do you think would be less of a bitch to work on, stick e39 540, or manual 535 e34, or auto 540 e34. Thanks
Captian Stiggy Youl deff want to get into a manual transmission. Early automatic E34's had really crappy transmissions from what Ive read and heard. Ive never owned one. I actually had a 91 E34 535i 5 speed for about a year. Great car! The M30 inline 6 is a bullet proof torque monster. Very popular to turbo charge. Super easy to work on. Decent marketplace for aftermarket parts too. The E39's will always be less reliable in my opinion because there is much more technology in the cars from the get go and more to go wrong. Plus the general market place for the e39's are people who are not enthusiasts and don't know anything about the car so they are poorly maintained in most cases and hard to find one thats been well cared for. A good rule of thumb I have stuck to is that you always want an OBDI car (95 and older) vs. an OBDII Car (96 and up) because they have a much simpler fuel injection system and are easier get through emissions with modifications present. Like I said before, I think youl be very happy in a 92-95 325is or 325i. Super cheap, Bazillion aftermarket parts available, reliable and super fun to drive!
spdrmns Wow thanks for all the tips, also I do like e36's my uncle even had a 318i thing lasted 400k+ miles and he abused it and did shitty maintenance on top. But if I was to get an e36 id rather get an m3 and new driver and m3 insurance is hell so il wait out on it. I think il keep my mind on the e34s thanks again :)
Oh yes. If you actually will pay attention to the car and maintain it well, you're going to love it, especially with the upgrades. Get an EAT chip or a Jim Conforti chip as an upgrade.
