The post office in the town next to us is plagued by terrible mail handling. They've been complaining for years and nothing happens. We heard that the people who work at that post office are all the rejects in our county and are sent to this location because it's up in the mountains and 45 minutes from any significant sized city.

It happens in every city. The problem is, yes, that the carriers are overworked to the extreme. In my city, they took away all our holidays and nearly all of our Sundays, while working 10-16 hour days. We could not keep our hours under control. The entire city went 8-hour medical at one point in protest! We have five zip codes. Anyway, many of us, including me, fell apart under these conditions. I quit in 2020. It was really disappointing, because I loved the work, but there was so much of it, it literally ruins people. And management is straight-up abusive (like, screaming and swearing at the carriers when they can't make their estimated times). Parcel loads were going up 200+% every year since I joined in 2015. I was very straight; never resorted to hiding or trashing mail. But we did have a few who couldn't handle the pressure and couldn't face these abusive managers when they had to tell them their delivery estimates were off, and they needed help.

There was an episode of King of the Hill that is surprisingly accurate. Bill was sad that he wasn't receiving mail and Hank tried to suggest that maybe he was supposed to get mail but it got lost. This immediately got Bill into the mindset that the post office is 100% responsible for losing his mail. So Bill and Hank went down to the post office and Bill angrily said "You lost my mail!" So the employee goes into the back. Hank walks back and says "So about my friend, you aren't going to find any mail for him. He just doesn't have any." And the employee says "I know that. Whenever we come into the back, we're just drinking coffee to make it look like we're searching". Then Bill approached and helped himself to a bunch of letters addressed to Santa.

PTSD can be brought on by a multitude of things that can cause stress, worry, dread, etc. To deal with the stress and worry of not knowing if you are getting your identity stolen, or not getting mail for so many things can make a snowball effect of stressful situations that can alter your livelihood. We don't know how many things went wrong for any of the people this happened to, along with her and possibly others residing in her home, and to go through that for so long could be traumatic. You shouldn't go around telling people their trauma isn't horrific enough to give them PTSD. You don't know them, their full story, and you certainly aren't her Doctor. So they wanted him to be on-call 7 days per week, but could only offer him 25-30 hours per week most weeks. He went to work for his other job on a Sunday, they tried to call him into work so someone with seniority could have the day off, and when the told them he was working on an ambulance that day they said they’d have to write him up for being unavailable. It was also mandatory to work every other Sunday at another office delivering Amazon packages. One carrier was retiring in a couple of years, but there were two RCAs ahead of me and the next carrier to retires was in 5 years, the next almost 10 years. When I was in training, the instructor told us that she had been with the USPS for 25 years. You'd think she was up for retirement in the next 5. Nope. She was an RCA for 12 years. She would have to work another 13 years to be eligible for retirement benefits. She was in her 50's. The USPS is a game you get into when you're in your early 20's and if you hit it lucky, you'll get to retire before you're 50. RCA/Rural Carrier is the only job in the USPS that doesn't accrue time for your pension when you start. It happens when you go full time and someone has to leave and you are first in line. We kept asking the office what was going on and it wasn’t until I got local news involved that we found out. A corporate spokesman traveled down and had the nerve to say that we wouldn’t understand the issue.

Didn't get our car license stickers one year and had to apply for duplicates, then the originals finally showed up a month later. I had a package delivered into the "big box" about 6 years ago, and the mail carrier either put the key for the box in the wrong mailbox, or didn't leave it at all. It took them 3 months to get me the key to get my package, because apparently they thought I just took the key and threw it away or something. I would go down to the post office now and then to inquire about it, and I couldn't believe the number of people in there complaining about not getting their mail.
I think most people that work for the post office take advantage of their positions and just like to play power trip games with the public. I've also had about a dozen different mail carriers in the last 6 years and almost all of them dress like bums.

It’s possible that you don’t either. For whatever it’s worth, it’s not something that only happens to people who’ve been to war. It’s a neurological and psychological condition that results from being exposed to repeated trauma. I don’t know about you, but if I’ve been trying to avoid being evicted from my home, trying to keep the lights on and water running, getting my taxes paid and tax returns back, keeping my vehicle from being reposessed, and making sure I’m getting my ballots for elections and not missing jury duty and winding up in prison because I didn’t report when I didn’t get the summonse, I might have PTSD after 3 years of that, too.
