Women are not seen as women, but either as an object or a godess in India. And when the expectations don't match, none other than the women are blamed. I think that's part of the problem. I'm not taking anything away from those beautiful men who saved the baby. But I'm simply using this chance to make a parallel to the reality.
actually alot of journalists do cry and respond emotionally to their work since they're human after all but its discouraged from showing that and is usually edited out since it makes them seem less objective which i think is crazy. i trust someone who responds like human more
The saddest part is only when the girls achieve they are acknowledged.,.Each and every girl by birth is an achiever , coz she has to undergo from the small al kind of hormonal, mental and physical changes in her body.... Salute to All the girls let's not only celebrate the goddess, let's try to respect each and every girl in our families 🇿🇦
lol people here claiming west has abortion , please go read difference between female infanticide and abortion . As a second daughter , who was told that my birth was not a cause of joy , this hit home .
I have cousins who have met the same reaction upon their births(with the mother crying profusely not wanting to meet her new born daughter). The Girl child isn’t a liability if you don’t treat her as one. As a Man, It is harrowing and almost funny to see this obsession of People wanting an heir for their Kingdom of Poverty. We as a society need to understand that a Child is not a 401K or a retirement plan, and that an empowered girl child is equally as capable of taking care of the responsibilities of her parents. Sadly, these arguments will once again fall on deaf ears waiting diligently for the cries of a young boy, upon whom they can put the burden of their old age. Think of the women capable of doing this, it’s not like their hands are clean. This depiction of Karna’s anger at Mata Kunti in the Mahabharat comes to mind, "मैं ध्यान जन्म का धरता हूँ, उन्मन यह सोचा करता हूँ, कैसी होगी वह माँ कराल, निज तन से जो शिशु को निकाल धाराओं में धर आती है, अथवा जीवित दफनाती है? "सेवती मास दस तक जिसको, पालती उदर में रख जिसको, जीवन का अंश खिलाती है, अन्तर का रुधिर पिलाती है आती फिर उसको फ़ेंक कहीं, नागिन होगी वह नारि नहीं.”
Many people watching this will feel angry at theses midwives. Come on, let's face the fact it's not them, it's the parents, the grandparents, the relatives, THE SOCIETY, THE MINDSET. Was, Is and Will always be. Change your mindset people

I became a father to a baby girl recently. She is the best gift life has given me. Can't understand how can some people be so cruel to kill their own child.
U think the other communities don't kill female babies . I think it's patriarchy. It's got nothing to do with caste . Which is another shitty aspect in this society.

It is very common. Even in my "tier-1" college where most people are coming from an educated and wealthy background, I have friends with such families where there are 3-4 siblings, youngest is boy and rest are girls.
I'm a pediatrician in Haryana and have attended so many deliveries. Even in the rich urban sector families are disappointed to see a baby girl and I see families celebrate when a baby boy is announced. It's not just about dowry and socioeconomic status. This thinking is ingrained into our society at every level that a girl child is a burden, and the boy will take the "family name forward".
I have heard people say “She will get married eventually and go to another house” So she’s a a part of the family but only temporarily? Very sad mentality.
I have taken delivery of many newborns as a junior resident. I observed that mother and her family not happy after knowing that girl is born. This is situation of Haryana Gurgaon. Here people do fasting, go to temple, go to black magicians, bribe the ultrasound Dr, eat the local medicines by quacks, do hawan, worship, tie sacred threads just to get a male baby. It is very sad to see that, after paying so much hardwork by doctor's team, when we tell the mother during the surgery that she had a girl, she starts crying, her BP- pulse starts fluctuating. This is very sad situation of 2024 in India.
Genuine question, is it only hindus that do this? I'm asking bcos I'm a Muslim and I haven't even heard of any Muslim doing this. Like sure some ppl favour boys than girls bcos it's kind of built in the culture(but that's slowly lessening these days) but I've never seen it that extreme. Maybe it's bcos in islam it's forbidden to do stuff like that, but then u would see it in atheist Indians too. So do u just see it in hindus or just Indians in general?
I am a 2nd child. After my elder sister, my grandmother was expecting a grandson and was soo disappointed when I was born. My father's side of the family including my father refused to even hold me in his arms for the first few days. Growing up I always heard my relatives and neighbors telling my parents how wonderful it would've been if I was a boy. My male cousins were always pampered and I was ignored by them 💔💔 Now that I am going to be 27 in a few days, those same relatives praises us two sisters for earning and taking care of our parents. I am the one to take my grandmother to hospital whenever she feels sick. My father literally thanks the almighty everyday now for giving him two daughters. This documentary breaks my heart. If only those little angels were given a chance to live 💔
I'm a single girl child and fortunately my family and parents haven't reacted differently to me and have always loved and cherished me, but every now and then someone from village area or people bring the talks about 'oh you don't have a boy, just a girl ?'(with a sad and disappointing face). Some have even told me that I shouldn't worry as I can have sons in future. I mean I would definitely love to have a son and daughter in future but these things should never be compared the way they do it. Those people hurt me so ive learned to ignore it with the support of my parents. I do not go in front of such people. I'm so proud of you sister and best wishes for you! We'll do our best to bring a great mindset in future generations!

This kind of shit, the feeling of being unwanted, unappreciated, controlled, and suppressed follows a woman all her life. It is a wound that has consumed women for several generations. A lot of what you see as feminism has its roots right from this.
your words have touched me. Sometimes I feel so angry with the world, simply because of what I have to tolerate because I am a woman. The root of that anger lies in what you described. Thank you
My father shows me so much love and all and buys me everything I want. He cares for me deeply and says he loves me the most. But one day I learned from another relative that he was really disappointed when the nurse told him that I was girl after my birth. It shocked me so much. I asked him about this and he just brushed it off and he didn't know what to say, he said at that time, it was like that, I'm not like that now etc, he was sad that I learned about this incident, he wanted to hide it from me. I was born very late to my parents because of fertility issues and I've heard them talk about it as a very struggling and difficult time for them waiting for a baby. But I'll never forget it, he does hold alot of misogynistic beliefs but I never in my life thought that after waiting sooo many years for a baby, he would be disappointed and sad about none other than the fact that I was born a girl.
I am so grateful that my parents had 2 daughters only and brought us up to be educated citizens contributing to the growth of this country. What we need is more real education, not the nonsense that goes in the name of education in this country. Real education is about treating everyone as equal, irrespective of gender, caste or religion. Sadly, all our politicians and society do is treat women as objects or as Goddesses. They can't just get to treat them as equal to men.

True, it's pathetic for our country to still harbour such ideas, this will get better when women are safer in this country and are not forced to stop progress in their careers, if they will not be independent then how can a parent feel good, once my mom told me if I was a female she would have died from worry by now, my mom may be seen as misogynistic but there is a reason why she felt like that, it's harder for women in many ways that men don't understand, I agree they get extra benefits but it's still not enough to empower the female population. I did my medical education in a government college in one of these areas. Female babies were routinely abandoned at the hospital. As the interns, we were the ones left holding the baby. The mother who was inside would sometimes ask for her child but many times that meant she was left to fend for herself and the baby immediately after giving birth. This is the ground reality of India. Many women were killed for saving their babies when they reached back home. Its so bad , that during general examination, when asked about how many children they had , they would count only the boys. Not only is this misleading in a medical sense, it was truly heartbreaking and made it difficult for many of us to have any empathy for these people.

I cannot explain the pain I felt seeing that infant lying, I felt so meaningless knowing that we could never know how many more were left and never saved.
I am a newly turned 18 y/o boy. Honestly i feel that i am very different in terms of thinking. Men are women are same species then why so much gender gap and gendre inequality. These problems are more in rural area. Key reasons are lack of awarness Myself coming from rural area of Bihar i have seen people having 5-6 daughters and single son This shows the mentality .
This was so moving. Thank you for making this. Can’t comprehend that how can someone kills that little soul right after being born. My first child is a girl and I can’t explain the joy of holding her first time into my hands, I couldn’t hold her more than few seconds because I couldn’t hold back my tears of joy. I cried out of joy and kept calling everyone like a child that I have got a baby girl. Alhamdulillah.
@@C_Stories yeah they just made up the whole story about female infanticide and all🙄 Sure you skipped your history classes. Go educate yourself first and then talk about feminism or whatever🙄
It may sound depressing but sometimes it's better to die at birth as a girl child than to grow with dreams, only for them to be crushed and live a life of slave, in constant suffering without no help and kindness. The amount of things a girl child and later woman has to go though is huge.
Suffering will never truly end when you are born female. Society will always expect slave labor and mindless obedience from you like a dog. No matter where you are in the world. We are called deviants and twisted for wanting to live our own lives and not serve the men and produce the children until we grow old. Sometimes I question if God could really create something this evil.
the dawri isn't what makes daughters a liability, they'll blame something, but at it's core, they just hate women. i've been living in an arab country, and while it's less prevalent, here they blame honour or shame (depending on who you ask) for why they hate having daughters. this is a worldwide thing, and it's so much worse in india. My heart goes out for my sisters in india.
Every coin have two sides, and same goes for this video..reporter show two kind of people one who kill and another who try to save.. this world is not same for everyone bad and evil are the two sides of this world.. you can accept it or try to chance it ...
This country is cursed with religion, casteism, illiteracy, ignorance, bigotry, patriarchy….overall the population is utterly stupid. And this is a failed country , no matter how much zillions the economy becomes.
Lots of tears were shed watching this video, hats off to the reporter who has covered this story for over 30 years, keeping people connected while also ensuring the story as told, such as the reason behind such murders, as well has interviewing the midwife at the end and still asking her about the babies she killed. It is sad she never really owned up to her crimes, but one can assume is it a persons last attempt to maintain a peace of mind at the end of their life. I am so glad the baby girl found at the start of the video was also saved and taken to a good family. Shame on those people who choose to kill or throw away a baby just for the crime of being a girl.

I am from Katihar (bihar) ,to be specific, just 5 kms away from the place Dumar chowk , mentioned in begining of the documentry.. It is very shocking and extremely sad to know that how did these cruel things used to happen in the past?.I feel ashamed of it. I'm 25 now and i never heard of it untill today...With my eyes filled, shivering body and tears rolling down my cheeks i would like to Thank to the activists/social workers, midwife involved in saving life of an innocent baby girl but at the same time feeling sorry for all those innocent souls who were murdered mercilessly for merely being a girl child.... How unlucky they were! This cruel society did not let them live their part of life. Thank you so much Amitabh Prashar sir for bringing up this story which has not been told yet.
This is my request to all the women watching this, please don't give up on fighting. Lets remind ourselves why the feminism movement started. Nowadays people hate using that word but lets remember why and how bad things had gotten for women to start a whole movement to fight for their basic human rights. Most of us living in towns and cities now think we don't need such activism anymore. Women go to work, dress however they want, have successful careers in 2024 so we don't need feminism anymore. That's not true. Every single house-help we have had since I was young, is a victim of domestic violence. Even in cities where women are considered to be "empowered", they face discrimination in one way or another. They are not safe walking on the roads, in hospitals, in schools, in colleges..even in their own homes. This superficial image of being in a progressive, women empowering society needs to be looked at with more criticism. We still have a long fight ahead. There are dowry cases even now. There are female infanticides even now. Sure, they've decreased but thats also because laws have gotten stricter. The mentality is still the same. The way indians raise their daughters and sons itself is a testament to the fact that the mindset is still the same. Daughters have to look a certain way, talk a certain way, dress a certain way, study well, treat everyone with respect but men don't have any schooling or lecturing done because "men will be men". Lets not delude ourselves. Its not just about you or me. A lot of underprivileged women still need strength and support.
What can we do if they are asexuals Nothing righr? And for your kind information, no men aren't even ready to marry these type of females They simply divorce or don't marry They are still single and live a life like a garbage
Imagine being a midwife forced/asked to kill small baby girls and you end up saving a few of them and then they come back to meet you as an adult - like a ghost from the past. Man I cried during that part - it must be so overwhelming - guilt, gratitude, happiness, relief, all sorts of feelings. I hope this social conditioning against females in every single from stops for good

Chinese female infanticide rate is much higher than India, as a matter of fact in all poor countries around the world people prefer boys over girls. Its not because of education that they do this, they do this because practically a boy does contribute more to a family than a girl in a poor country. If you will put your thinking cap on, you will realize the rootcause pretty quickly but BBC or the western media woundnt want you to believe that the solution is so simple.
@ShivangiTiwari-yq8exthink rationally what he's saying carries some substance. Don't get swayed by your selfish emotions. @@sandeepkumarsingh7344 I know plenty of women including myself who support their families financially and in many other ways regardless of whether they are married or not. At 1:11 I don’t have the courage this watch this further. As a mother of two, first being a baby girl I remember how worried I used to be about the gender of my second baby, the societal pressure and mental intimidations I used face while being pregnant. The only respite was my husbands support, without it any mother can succumb to the pressure and it’s inevitable. Yes we are strong for our kids externally, but internally there’s only stress and worry. I feel bad for all these babies . I really do.
Where in the Northeast (meghalaya) the girl child got the power to carry the last name and the boy has to move to the female house on the wedding day. While the birth of a baby boy is also celebrated as much joy as that when the female child is born. There is no such descrimation, since birth as it is the will of the above who create the universe, we are here to only accept what comes to us, and it came with a reason. Shame on the gender discrimination, we are equal in the eyes of God, law and almost everywhere and deserve to live and survive in a peaceful world.
Sad to see that the mentality of people in comments is that, if someone does something bad then it is because of hinduism and mindset of this country , but if someone does something good then its because of his/her own mindset. why can't people just accept what is wrong and try to help improve society rather then just blaming everything on religion and the country. People should remember that not everyone is same and when we see everyone as a bad person it creates disharmony between people.

I am a 27 years old woman and I am going to become a teacher. After watching this video I became more sure why I wanted to be a teacher. 🙏
Yeh the reason all of this happened lack of gender sensitivity. We boys actually don’t know what challenges girls faces and never been taught to how to converse with them. all life we were trained to be toxic masculinity of patriarchy. Right now I am in phase were I get self awareness about that I don’t think that girls faces issues and their life has been simple can easily date or have romantic relationships but after analysing myself I get that I have very flawed thoughts. So to change my thoughts I want to talk to girls about the problems they faces but when I tried to that I find that even girls don’t want to educate us about their problems and think of us as creeps. I have dream to be a teacher i don’t think i want to be a teacher who is unaware of other gender problems. I don’t know how i will teach myself this probably be a book but I will be happy if I really get face to face talks with the other gender themselves.

I don't know what to say, how to react, what to think, I'm numb I can't feel anything. This is one of the darkest sides of India. Thank you BBC for bringing this up
This seriously broke my heart. There are many people who are dying to be parent. They are ready to spend lakhs on treatment. Depression comes with every failed IVF. There are also heartless people who are killing babies. What is wrong with our society.
Very shameful but I got to know recently that my aunt and my grandmother weren't really happy when I was born and that to give birth to my brother 2 or 3 girls were aborted. I'm loved but whenever I look at my brother now, I think of my sisters and how I could've been one of them.
"We found a goddess, we have to save her", salute to those guys
Women are not seen as women, but either as an object or a godess in India. And when the expectations don't match, none other than the women are blamed. I think that's part of the problem. I'm not taking anything away from those beautiful men who saved the baby. But I'm simply using this chance to make a parallel to the reality.
I love how the journalist isn't afraid to cry and be vulnerable. We need more empathetic journalists like these.
Yes, that was so refreshing and yet heartwarming to see
These are obsolete from our country.
Empathy is a lost word in our country, which needed most in this times.

This depiction of Karna’s anger at Mata Kunti in the Mahabharat comes to mind,

The journalist shedding tears shows he was genuinely so concerned

Feminism started so the people in power could get more money from more tax payers.
Because of such reasons the educated indian women are not having any children in this patriarchal Indian society
What can we do if they are asexuals
Nothing righr?
And for your kind information, no men aren't even ready to marry these type of females
They simply divorce or don't marry
They are still single and live a life like a garbage
I couldn't stop my tears after seeing Monica met Siro ji
Siro was crying crocodile tears, she does not look like someone having a conscience or guilt about killing innocent babies.
Anila Madam- A Ray Of HOPE...And Salute from the very deep of my heart to Midwives who SAVED girl child...
I hope this social conditioning against females in every single from stops for good
Such a wholesome documentary. I am currently working in Bihar in CSR, it is heart breaking to see such reality now.
Is it still happening out there? I can't even think these are happening somewhere in the world. What a weird and illiterate society!?
Sometimes I feel like Vir Das got dragged for no reason at all. We do come from 2 India.
He was so true lol
He performed this on an international stage.
Majority of people do things shameful for India but the minority living abroad is subjected to racism
He always told the truth, which is my he was dragged
Kya kar sakte hai sach Sunna logoke liye muskil hi hota hai
No male owners of Scorpio, Thar, Fortuner, Bullet from Haryana, Punjab, U.P, Rajasthan were harmed in the making of this video 😂😂😂
Lmao
how tf they are even related to this ? wtf
Example of the problem why india is not developed or safe for women, india is becoming day by day chapri and dangerous.
Idk if I should continue on crying or laugh after seeing your comment 😭😭😭
??
The Indian Society as a whole is responsible by giving a tacid assent.
People want Son so that he can take care of them in Old Age
Protect the Family from outside threat - Animals, Religion, Caste, Family Disputes, etc
Daughter can also take Care but it is difficult because in most cases she will marry & from other house it is difficult to take care of Old Age Parents
& In Physical Power in most cases it is difficult to win from so many threats
Some People dies with Good Health & Some dies with Bad Medical Condition for 5 - 15 Years of Last Time
Thousands of years ago we don't have this type of Transport system by which we can go to here & there in hours
Now we have that Transport System but it is difficult now also
Bharatiya People & outside Forces ☪️, ✝️, 👁️, etc also damaged the Joint Family Structure
If that was working other Aunt & Uncle Son can take care of that Daughter Parents who are alone in Old Age
By this if there is only Daughter her Cousin Brother can take care of his Biological Parents
But this needs Healthy Joint Family Structure
Chinese female infanticide rate is much higher than India, as a matter of fact in all poor countries around the world people prefer boys over girls.
Its not because of education that they do this, they do this because practically a boy does contribute more to a family than a girl in a poor country.
If you will put your thinking cap on, you will realize the rootcause pretty quickly but BBC or the western media woundnt want you to believe that the solution is so simple.
@ShivangiTiwari-yq8exthink rationally what he's saying carries some substance. Don't get swayed by your selfish emotions. Come out of the blaming mentality women contribute almost 50% of the population and the percentage gets higher in senior citizens . Take responsibility change what's wrong don't just fight for short dresses and reserved seats
@@sandeepkumarsingh7344 I know plenty of women including myself who support their families financially and in many other ways regardless of whether they are married or not. It's just not popularized and men turn a blind eye to this contribution. Men like you are so blinded by your own gender that you will keep on explaining and justifying stereotypical views but not notice the world change under your own nose.
@@Priyaykanth2 this guy has been copy pasting this exact comment everywheere shame on you
If it bothers you that this documentary brings shame to India remember for you reputation of this nation is more important than abolishing a system that legitimises and supports rape and constant oppression of our people. People > Nation
Why no one wants to make a movie on such heart touching and so important topic for india "Female Infanticide" ?
one of the most difficult videos to watch
Absolutely right
I have seen few documentaries in life..but none of them made me cry throughout the entire span..Glad to see that as demons are there so as saint in the form of human to act against such demons..
Hardly words could express what i am feeling right now..
Also kudos to the journalist to present this thing so beautifully which he has been carrying for thirty long years🙏❤
A society of Serial Killers... Hard truth.
The work that these people have done is nothing less than a miracle. So much respect for all the social workers - the unsung heroes.
They probably aren't even reaching 1 percent of babies who needs them.... 😢
What a positive story? How the women brought change is heart warming.
Sorry couldn’t complete documentary don’t want to cry in library only half of the documentary put me into tears
These are the few people that make this world a better place.
They aren’t few they really aren’t 😂😂
Sad to see that the mentality of people in comments is that, if someone does something bad then it is because of hinduism and mindset of this country , but if someone does something good then its because of his/her own mindset.
why can't people just accept what is wrong and try to help improve society rather then just blaming everything on religion and the country.
People should remember that not everyone is same and when we see everyone as a bad person it creates disharmony between people.
That's the biggest problem in today's society: GENERALISATION which gives rise to stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination.
bbc is anti hindu, thats what gets them their British christian views and the comments are more than happy to jump on the bandwagon. just see the ones about cow and religion. their social justice agenda will stop outside the doors of muslim and Christian women. i haven't watched the full video but i gurantee you they won't show the measures taken by the government or spiritual leaders to stop these things and the impact they had.
I just gave birth to my daughter.. she is 4 month old...I can't see any baby this way....I see my daughter in every baby now....😢
Es pure video me main bas roti hi rah gyi 🥺
Agar dahej hi vajah h to dahej lena aur dena dono band kar de par nahi ham esa rasta chunenge jha aurto ko hi dabana pade.
Rape hota h to ladko ko rokne ki jagah ham apni betiyon ko kahenge bahar mat nikalo, ese mat chalo, ye mat pahno.
Kaisa samaj h hmara. Jab tak ham ladkiyon ko shikshit nhi karenge ye samaj ke thekedar ese hi solution nikalte rhenge.
Thank you for this heartbreaking documentary.
@@ajstark7134 Glad to read your comment to be honest ,You sound really sensible !! There are many books you can read to understand about gender bias ...if you want I can suggest "Invisible Women " or "half the sky" please suggest to your friends too !!
:)) I hope you will be a great teacher one day all the best!!
If abortion is okay, then this okay too😂😂 what's the deal?
Yes, if there is chance of crime outside like chain snatching or theft do you roam outside wearing gold???
U will be an excellent teacher. I have hope that you will be the kind of teacher that students will think of decades later and remember "she was such a nice teacher"
as a female, it is tough to watch but thank you for also showing that there are people who are saving innocent lives .... Thank you so much
Amitabh Parashar ji; this was a great documentary. Hats off!
And when these issues are brought up, guys try their best to divert the topic towards their "issues " as if a girl's life is a piece of cake.
Iam a mother to a beautiful daughter and iam proud being a girl mom
Tears rolled down my cheeks while watching the whole documentary.. God bless all the people who are doing such a great work.
Love you vedha❤
May you getl all the happiness in the world
I was controlling my tears all the way through the video but couldn't control when anila jee met monica & the meeting of siro & monica too. The rest of the video was beyond excellence 🤍🌸🫶🏻
As a guy, I cried. I usually do not but this time I did.
@@heathens2867hey just don’t
This all feminist propoganda
I don't know what to say, how to react, what to think, I'm numb I can't feel anything. This is one of the darkest sides of India. Thank you BBC for bringing this up
This story needs to be told. We have forgotten this. It feels like the past but it's here right now
This seriously broke my heart.
Such stories need to be shown to general public and male chauvinists at crossroads and in rural areas and in cities too for the EDUCATED FOOLS.
