So first, let us answer the simple question, what is houndstooth?
In more specific terms, houndstooth is a symmetrical multicolored broken check pattern that is formed by the overall weave structure of the garment. Houndstooth can be distinguished from other similar types of check patterns by its jagged edges which are formed by tangent twill lines that flare out from the sides of the squares. It is called houndstooth because some people see these jagged edges as resembling the back teeth of a dog.
A few notes on terminology that you might encounter with houndstooth.
First of all, the plural form, especially if we are talking about different garments is houndstooths not houndsteeth. Similar terms include dogtooth or dogstooth, primarily in British usage In French, you will see the phrases Pied De Poule which means hen's foot or Pied De Coq which means Rooster's foot for slightly larger patterns. If we are talking about a particularly small houndstooth pattern, again in English usage, you may also see the term puppytooth, we'll talk about that a little bit later when we get to houndstooth on different kinds of garments.
How to wear and pair it well in your outfits?
On the whole, houndstooth, as well as pretty much other kinds of traditional tweed pattern you'll see, is fairly underrated. Tweed has a multitude of different color, texture, and weaving options and you can get much more variety by using it in your outfits than you could with just a standard plain wool.
Given its heritage, houndstooth is an ideal choice for autumn and winter and various activities you might participate in during those times. Say, for example, cold weather golfing, trout fishing, or bird hunting. On the opposite end of the spectrum, houndstooth, as well as other tweed patterns, are not ideally suited for traditional white collar business scenarios.
Sport Coat
Our founder, Sven Raphael Schneider, has many different tweed coats, several of them in houndstooth. Because of their variations in color, pattern, and texture, they are very versatile, fun, and easy to wear. You can even own up to thirty of them and still probably have room for more in your closet. Also, vintage jackets featuring a houndstooth pattern are fairly easy to find.
Shirts
Most typically for dress shirts, you will see a very small houndstooth pattern, this is where the term puppytooth again comes in.
Neckwear
As far as houndstooth in neckwear is concerned, houndstooth ties are a traditional and still popular option. You will see houndstooth on neckties in printed silk which is usually smoother as well as a woven bourette fabric which has a little bit more texture to it.
Pocket Square
For pocket squares, the same rules generally apply as for neckwear. A houndstooth pocket square in silk can add a pop of color and interest to an otherwise more muted jacket.
Hats
Flat caps are a traditional choice that still remains equally stylish today.
Shoes
As we have said in the past, brown is the most versatile color for outfits consisting of a combination of a sport coat and odd trousers. Oxfords, derbies, and loafers are all acceptable in various shades of brown for these kinds of outfits. For a slightly more modern shoe style, monk straps or suede shoes still usually in varying shades of brown can also look particularly smart. Conversely, black shoes are much more risky to wear with these kinds of outfits.
Boutonnieres
Generally, when wearing a boutonniere with a houndstooth jacket, you should go for something smaller and more subdued because you don't want a large flower clashing with the already bold nature of the houndstooth pattern.

Took me a while to start "appreciating" houndstooth. I think because my favorite two history professors in university only wore herringbone tweed. The first Fall-Winter jacket I bought to teach school in was a herringbone brown. I was given a brown/tan houndstooth jacket for Christmas by a relative who told me, " You're always wearing tweed." It took a little, but it became one of my favorite jackets.
Great video. Houndstooth has become my favorite pattern in sport coats. Much more appealing to my eye than window pane or larger check patterns.

Some constructive criticism, the lighting needs a little work in regards to the lighting on Preston being softer. It makes the clothes look great but it makes his face blend in too much with the background.

If you wear them with brown or tan shoes (both colours of all shades) it looks superb. My only black trousers are corduroy and are just striking with most non-black shoes.

I had two sports coats that I grew out of, one hounds tooth like the one in this video at the beginning but a little darker, and one black and white puppy tooth. Now that I’ve lost weight, they’d probably fit me again. If only I hadn’t given them to the charity shop. I used to have a hounds tooth 2 piece suit much like the one shown, when I was 14 years old.

Am I the only one that thinks Preston's clothes are a little bit too big?
It's a classic fit, old school suits and so on are more generous size wise. Having a slim fit in regards to suits, coats and so on is relatively recent in fashion. I'm guessing he likes keeping it real in regards to the more loose fit of the 30's/40's.
I agree with Patrick, jacket seems a tad long but then he's rather lanky. Better to err on the side of caution with his physique and go for a longer jacket anyway, otherwise his torso would look too short and his legs would resemble toothpicks! Achieving an overall sense of proportion is the most important thing.
I was thinking his coat was too big the whole video. Too long and it hangs off his shoulders
they are definitely too big. raphael wears classic fit too. i hate how raphael's pants are so wide. but, most times, his jackets fit him well. this dude is drowning in the clothes he is wearing. as tho a kid wearing his dad's clothes that are a few sizes too large and too wide.
Good to see some lively discussion with a variety of perspectives on this topic! The answer that would retain a bit of my credit would be that this jacket is cut in the traditional American "sack" style, so it's a bit more full around the torso, and that it looks even a bit wider because I'm wearing it open to show off the waistcoat. The simplest and most honest answer, though, is that yes, it is frankly a bit big on me. :) Thanks for all the comments!

Watching this video, I do understand the complexity of wearing a houndstooth suit. I do have a question though. If I had a full houndstooth suit with a single-breasted jacket (notched lapels), and a floral tie consisting of a yellow background, small pink flowers with mint green leaves, could I pull it off with a light pink shirt and silver floral cufflinks? Would that just be way too loud? I would wear a simple pair of black derby shoes.

I first learned of Houndstooth as a pattern included in the Windows 98 operating system, as was further exposed to it in the apparell of Ricky in the television series "Trailer Park Boys".
