Nice ! Finally explanations about THE most important visual seeting. Thank you.
Just a note, VOF in AC is in the vertical plane. The schematic explains nicely what it the FOV though.
What are the benefits of a correct VOF, you'll see in a much obvious way the elevation differences on the tracks.
Dramatic changes on Nordschleife as exemple.
It's very disturbing at the beginning I agree. And you'll quickly want a larger screen or place to it closer to enlarge the view.
Activate the virtual rearview mirror if it's outside of the view.
And when your sitting position is spot on, you'll stop hitting obstacles when trying the exit the parking on the tourist Nordschleife because you have a much more accurate sense of the vehicule dimensions and dynamic. You're getting closer to reality and your brain understand it much better if you're also a driver in real life.
Your trajectory will also be more precise and more real.

Coming from more simcade and arcade games it felt wrong to set it that close but it made sense once you realize WHY it is needed. I never knew about the head position as I was in the dash cam that does not let you adjust that. A few laps it did feel weird and slower but I got used to it. I would simply us the bonnet cam, but the FOV isn't adjustable in bonnet view, unlike other games.
The only time I will ever see the actual dash is in VR where things are just correct.

I've tried using the real fov using calculations, but it's frustrating not seeing anything to your sides because it's all car frame everywhere. And its not like I can turn my head to look there. So a while back I started using the hood cam and I never looked back. I get a fairly realistic fov, but with the extra advantage of seeing everything around me
It's true, it's not realistic, but driving on a tv in your home isn't realistic, either 😂

Can’t believe that this wasn’t the first thing you did when you first got AC 😮
I’m a AC noob, but it was the first thing I did, but maybe that is because I went straight to a triple screen set up (using three aging 24” 1080P monitors I already had which hefty bezels), this kind of forces you to use a calculator tool when setting up your hardware, because there is an ‘ideal’ angle for the side monitors to be at too. So I spent some time setting up my cockpit and tweaking the FoV / seating position.
For info to others, with my triple 24” 1080P monitors, I’m around 80cm from my screen, and from memory have the side screens at 42 degs. I like to be able to see my rear view mirrors, especially the drivers side wind mirror, and the Rev counter, which I can usually just about do on my set up on most cars, but often the passenger wing mirror is not visible, and on some cars, I onky get the top of the Rev counter as I want the interior rear view mirror on screen too. Triple 24” screens are very usable, however, I would certainly like three larger displays - both in the heretical height and the width/wrap around peripheral vision.
Oh, one other point, in AC, when you are in the car, there is also a tool (available from the right hand side menus, like the driver FoV one) for adjusting your mirrors, you can adjust them up & down, in & out, so you can see the road behind better - not all cars have a good default in my setup. The tool permits you to adjust the interior rear view mirror AND the Drivers wing mirror…I guess the passenger wing mirror is also possible to set up, but as I seldom see it on my screen I’m not sure I’ve ever used it….maybe on a single seater I’d see it, but I mostly drive 60’s sports racing cars. I really find the rear view mirrors helpful to have better situational awareness around my car.
When I built my rig, just before Xmas 2022, i did it relatively cheaply…or, at least, as cheaply as I could get away with. So I’m using an old PC with a Xeon 5670 cpu (ancient!) and a 1080Ti GPU, 64gb ram installed (but only 48gb is addressable due to limitations of mobo), 1TB SSD (I have a separate NAS box storage for data) - I already had this PC. I’m using an old Renault Espace drivers seat that I saved when I scrapped the vehicle many years ago, but I did buy a Track Racer TR160 cockpit to mount it on - a bit of research showed that I could not buy the aluminium extrusion cheap enough to build my own vs buying a TR160 in a sale (think it cost £370 ish from memory), and the triple monitor support was a further £50-70 ish. I then went for the Fanatec DD pro 8nm wheelbase and the McLaren wheel, and a universal hub which I then bought a cheap round leather clad steering wheel from eBay to mount onto the universal hub. The round wheel is much better for 60’s sports cars. I went for the Fanatec H pattern shifter (really impressed with it) - again, it just adds to the feel of 60’s cars. I went with the Fanatec elite v2 pedals which were one of the cheapest options with a load cell brake pedal. The pedals came with a tuning kit, but I could not get the brake pedal to my liking, I wanted it to feel like the road cars I’ve driven, in search of this, I found an additional non-Fanatec tuning kit on ebay intended for the club sport pedals, but they work with the Elite V2’s (not the V1’s though I think). This allowed me to tinker with the brakes until I got a feel similar to a normal road car - important to note that this is probably not the fastest set up to have for brakes as I have a bit of travel in the pedal which stiffens up the more you press, like a real road car, rather than a pedal that has very little physical travel but it’s all down to the pressure being applied, which maybe more race car like, I don’t know, I’ve never driven one, but I liked a brake pedal with more ‘feel’ to me, which meant a bit of travel despite it being a load cell….if any of that makes sense? The clutch pedal is okay, nothing special just okay. The accelerator pedal is a bit too light for my liking, but there is no way to adjust this unlike the brake pedal, but I can live with it, the accelerator pedal is arguably the weakest aspect of the Elite V2 pedals for me though.
Maybe one day when I can afford it, I will update the monitors to three 27” or 32” monitors, or, what I’d really like to experience, would be to get three gaming projectors and make a custom large wrap around screen to project them onto with no bezels - that would be neat! (But expensive for gaming projectors)

If you can't see your left hand mirror (on a left hand drive car) how realistic is it. What's the point of having a mirror you can't use ? In RL you can always see the mirror.
If your not in a rig, or up close on a desktop, FOV matters very little. If the TV or monitor is farther away from your steering wheel than a wind shield (wind screen) would be, your settings are meaningless.
PS; One of the best reason to use VR is being able to see both mirrors.
If you're using a wheel stand and TV the 53 setting is correct according a setup calculation by another so called mathathlete.

32 feels too slow to me. I find that 44 is a nice balance. Just set it at what feels good.

That's not how it works, you're meant to have it set to wat it should actually be, otherwise you won't judge speed and distance properly

@@stefanroseEP3 I agree, to a point but when i set it that low it doesn't match my wheel rotation and just feels wrong. Maybe when i get my ultrawide it will feel better but It's all about how it feels, not what you're 'meant' to have it set at.

@@JetRed_7 FOV has zero affect on your wheel rotation mate, perhaps that's not set correctly either. You have to make sure the wheel rotation in game is matched to what it is in the wheelbase properties.

@@stefanroseEP3 It's set right, i just find myself over rotating when set that low. I find that i drive better when its a bit higher.

Setting the fov recommended by that calculator made me lose the entire view of the sides. Making it actually HARDER to race.
