Watched the Apollo Moon landing with my dad and got this for Christmas in 69-70. Fav toy ever. Misplaced it when we moved. Broke my heart, still miss this toy.
Thanks for sharing this . I had one when I was 7 years old, and the space race was going strong back then. I got it for X-mas that year (1966). I played and played with that thing.
I had one of these, probably my favorite toy ever, but as an idiot kid I ended up cracking it by doing one too many "splashdowns" into our backyard pool from a second-floor window. I remember mine came with a flexible plastic 45 rpm record with audio from the first orbital Mercury flight, John Glenn's Friendship 7.
I was a kid who played with G.I. Joe in the 1960s -- along with my friends, Nicky and Pablo -- and we would have loved to have your Mercury astronaut and capsule! Nice find, excellent condition
If you would have taken his outfit off you may have found he had a pull string with voice box. I have that one. but hes marked 1964 and his voice still works.
Great find! No worries about the suit, it is made from the same material worn by astronauts! I’ve handled it and it’s not fragile at all. Even the zippers still work .
Nice job! I have the spacecraft, but all of the labels had come off--but I found replacement stickers for the control panel and the flag on eBay, and they did well to replace the originals. I finally got an astronaut GI Joe (the 1997 re-release) which fits perfectly in the capsule! A long-time toy "want" that finally came through! Glad to see your original set looks as good as it does!
I loved my G.I. Joe space capsule! Mine went on dozens of perilous 'missions,' but he always made it back---barely! He met a sad end when one of my thief cousins stole him in 1968, and claimed that he put this huge toy in his suitcase by mistake. I still hate him.
I had one when I was a kid you’re missing the 45 record that came with it. It actually went through the whole countdown for Lyft off and some other scenarios. What’s wrong with?
Great piece of toy history you've got there. 48 stars? FYI, the space race was initiated by the Soviets with the launching of the Sputnik satellite in '57. Pres. Kennedy, in '61, began a dramatic expansion of the U.S. space program with the launching of the famed Mercury capsules the same year. Hawaii and Alaska became the 49th and 50th states in '59, so the Mercury capsules all had 50 stars on the flag by then.
thats cool. i got me some joes too. 12 inch and i had many joes as a child. big joes. i am 46. i got a video somewhere on my channel of some of my 12 inch figures. but i got more since then so i should do a updated video.
Nice to see! I've still got mine from 1966 with box, and a 1964 GI Joe wearing the space suit - well, most of it, can't find the gloves or booties. Also lost the 45 RPM record about the Mercury program that came with it. BTW it's a 50 star flag, six rows of five and four rows of five. The 1912-60 48 star flag had six rows of eight, so the rows all lined up evenly.
GI jJoe's have a scar because the human form can't be trademarked. Hasbro put the scar on to differentiate their action figures from any other toy company who wanted to make a similar figure.
@@brianfediuk No, not terrible at all, informative actually for those who are interested. Just figured you are much younger so you didn't know. Aside, a 50 star flag after 1959. It's a nice looking capsule, had one myself, a lifetime ago.
Brian Fediuk look when they were new, they were grey. The one in your video looks smoked through time. If you were a kid in the 90s , they were little then weren't they ? My kids were never interested.

Sorry to hear! Come back to this video if you ever feel nostalgic!
I had that set as a kid -- and the space suit is on backwards, by the way.
Ty!
I remember how that capsule was a PITA to open. 😆
I bet!
Yes especially in the bathtub with soapy hands.
Thanks for sharing this . I had one when I was 7 years old, and the space race was going strong back then. I got it for X-mas that year (1966). I played and played with that thing.
Nice! Yeah when I saw this sitting in my parents' eBay pile of things to sell, I knew I needed to make a video on it.

Had that as a kid i still have the 3 fuzzy gi joes thanks to mom saving them
I had that about 1967-68ish. I remember doing a splashdown in the bathtub.
Still have mine. Several, actually.

Cool!
I still have the 45rpm record of John Glenn’s voice. “Rrrrrroger, the clock is operating, we’re on our way”.
Very cool!
NIce... this was one I wanted so badly back in the day. My best friend had it, and it was so cool! Thanks for sharing.
Happy to share!
I had one of these. It was a great toy
Cool video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
i had this.....
The only thing I can say since I have one of these is that the astronaut suit is on backwards and the speaker unplugs from the capsule!
If you would have taken his outfit off you may have found he had a pull string with voice box. I have that one. but hes marked 1964 and his voice still works.
I should have looked closer haha. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for sharing! It wasn't mine, but my parents picked it up at a yard sale. Still an amazing toy!
Mine has a glow in the dark back wall and the door slides freely
Very cool! Glad yours works better!
Contact Toy Paloy, doubt I spelled that right, for clues on how to fix and clean Joe and his capsule.
It already sold on eBay, but thanks!
Had that also got mine in 1969 the capsule got cracked pretty quick the plastic window broke early on then older brother through it out the window

My capsule and astronaut Joe were so cool. I wanted to be an astronaut.
The space suit is on backwards.
Thanks. Can't go back and fix it, but oops :)

Interesting! Thank you for sharing!
Space suit is on backwards. But nice set.
Fascinating

Haha whoops

Nice!

Interesting! I have the GI Joe too. Well, parents have it actually. Its part of their collection
ITS ON BACKWARDS but cool vid
Yeah, I know. Whoops!
TOO BAD HIS ASTRONAUT SUIT IS ON BACKWARDS, LOOK AT THE INSTRUCTION SHEET. THE STRAPS AND TRANSVERSE ZIPPER GO ON THE FRONT.
Lol oops my bad!
Right on
GI jJoe's have a scar because the human form can't be trademarked. Hasbro put the scar on to differentiate their action figures from any other toy company who wanted to make a similar figure.
Now that's a cool fact!
The silver suit is on backwards ?
Yup!
Suits on backwards.
Yeah, a few people called me out on that. Guess I was a terrible 60's kid lol

In space, no one can hear you scream.
Indeed
The original is grey, not smoked. I had one when I was 5.
Not sure what you mean exactly? Sorry, I know nothing about the toy. I was a kid in the 90s so my GI Joe toys were more modern.

How fragile is that figure
I was super careful with it, as older plastic tends to get more brittle. I didn't want to test it and break it!
Most of these are beat to shit when you find them.
48 come on dude it was 50...dont be 30somethingish.....😅
