@@BarryMain It is expensive but we have so few choices in Australia, other than this, the only one I could find is the Noch Rubber bottle applicator, none of the electrified applicators.
Hi Ron I purchased the unit that War World Scenics labels under the Peco brand name. This unit works just OK with the 9 volt battery but soon becomes depleted. Most of the static grass units have a 12 to 15 volt generator installed. I went on Amazon and purchase a 12 volt wall wart and and a receptacle to receive the end of the wall wart plug. I mounted the receptacle on the end of the handle buy drilling a hole the proper size to receive the receptacle and wired it to the feeds to the generator. This provides the user with a constant 12 +/- voltage that increases the static flow. I did this modification to 2 other units I have an they work much better. Also, if you add a little bit of water to the Mod Podge, the static current seems to flow better. Also, after use, remove the battery. This will help extend the life of the battery. If you have grass that doesn't want to stand up, go over it, (without touching it) with a computer "key pad" vacuum. They have enough suction to stand up the grass without sucking it up, It takes a little practice but it does the job.
Thank you for the review. I am in an N scale model railroad club and am looking for a static grass applicator for personal use on my modules as well as being able to share with the club layout. I am hoping that static grass will help bring the layouts to a more realistic look. Your video made it easy to see the actual product in use. Very well put together. Thank you. Happy modeling !
Nice review Ron ,always helpful.I used to have the Noch 2.0, very expensive ,very bulky and it crapped out on me last month ,although it worked very well.I just recently bought the Woodland Scenics Static King and must say I am very happy with this machine ,good size and fit, easy to use and nice bright Led light strip to tell you it`s on.I really like the fact that the negative wire with the alligator clip is plenty long and made of a very flexible type of plastic/rubber and like the Noch ,comes with several screen sizes. The positive part of the generator inside the hopper is a pointy, crown shaped device that makes great contact with the grass fibers and really makes the grass stand up nicely. The price is also very reasonable. At any rate ,these machines are great and very useful to give our layouts that extra level of detail and realism we seek. Great show as usual Ron !! Paul T in Canada
I have one of their static grass applicators and love it I have been using it for over a year now. They have a very good selection of various static grass product.
Hi Ron! I appreciate the review and most importantly...your honest opinion. Certainly seems to get the job done. I'll keep this one in mind whenever I get to the point of needing one. Thanks! DG
Hi Ron. Great review. You would need 6 D size batteries to equal one 9v battery. (there about). Also, 9v rechargeable batteries will pay for themselves over time.
Good review, Ron. Thanks. I have one of these and really like using it on my layout. I’m surprised that War World Scenics didn’t send you their glue and spray to use in this review instead of mod podge. ...Roy
This looks really interesting and I like the size. I have the big Noch one and it is really too big to use effectively in small areas, especially on the little micro layouts I build. I’ve seen some really small ones as well but this seems like a better all-purpose size.
I purchased one and it is cheaper than woodland scenics. It is a kit and has the grass and glue I am impressed by the quality of it Mine only has one screen
Ron - good review. Just a thought on the battery. I’m not sure leaving it turned on significantly runs down the battery. If you’re not actually using it there is probably not much, or any, current being drawn from the battery. But that’s a good thing. Not knowing the details of the design, I can’t say for sure, but it’s a good guess that it could be left on for quite a while. The switch is likely there to avoid accidental discharge. A longer test will tell the tale.
Nice Review Ron. But the micro applicator does only come with the one screen size, that will do 2mm to 6mm static grass. They do two sizes of applicator the bigger one Does come with 3 screen sizes and will do upto 12mm grasses but is more expensive. They do some great products, check out the flock box applicator for making trees.
Peco Scene PSG-1 is the same item with different branding. Stopped selling them a while back because it didn't seem quite powerful enough, the support wasn't great ("you didn't use our grass", and "send it back" when it came from the UK via a distributor, isn't ideal -- WWS may be better than Peco was, don't know), and the Woodland Scenics Static King is about the same price with a lot more features and capability (several screens including ability to use longer grass, see-through hopper, stand for creating better contact with ground, wall power option, etc). Re skinning there are static grass-specific glues that don't skin as quickly if you wish to go that route. My two cents anyways.
Urban myth, the ground rod does not need to touch the surface. You don’t need a nail, you don’t need to touch the glue. It may not make sense, but that is how it works.
Not enough product info. Spent to much time talking or using the applicator. I would like to see more of the product itself. Whats its construction like? Is everything soldered inside or crimped. Whats the battery compartment look like? Whats the handle feel like? Is it heavy? Will it last? What kind of packaging does it come in? Its a static applicator, its use is elementary at best. This is going to cost me $90+ after shipping and tax. Why is it better than the ones that cost me $25? Didn't really help me out unless I was looking for "How to apply static grass" videos. Not trying to be offensive so please don't take it that way. (My 2019 feelings disclaimer)

About $120AUD on ebay, it seems hard to load

@@BarryMain Ok, there are a few cheaper alternatives but they also look pretty dodgy, as in risk of electrocution.

Great review. Peco also sells a version of the applicators made by Wwsl.
Thank you Ron! You are able to clearly explain the technicality of static grass applicators and how to use them.
Thanks Ron, I appreciate your review, just finished placing my order for one.

Very good review Ron, As we have comeback to the hobby it is hard to come across a true review and I feel you have done this thank you.

Ron, very good review and look into this product. I'm gonna need one in a few months and sounds like it fit the bill.
Thanks Ron

Looking slim and trim Ron! Merry Christmas.
Great review Ron!
Is it the same thing as a peco one ?
Actually yes, I think they are the same applicator with different labeling.
Sorry, I missed the name of this tool, can you tell me what is called and who sells it?
Does the applicator work with other kinds of flocking fibers?? Like 1-6mm black flocking fibers
Yes. There are different screens for different lengths of fiber.
Hi Ron. I was just looking at this one. Thanks for the demo and review. Pretty cool. - Drew
I have the same applicator and it also only came with the one screen do you know where to buy the others or how to make one for it?

where is the link? it does look like a good product
The link to the applicator is my pick of the week. The link to the Ebay store is just below that.
Yep, that's what I bought for bnsf6951 and I buy myself the electric bug zapper static grass applicator!
Can you do a video on how many locomotives you can run on dc as part of a train . Like for an example 4 F7s or GP9s on the head of train .

D-Rail Would thinning the glue a bit keep it from skinning over too soon?
