I was 57 when I started watching this video. Suddenly, I'm 62! Made me age 5 years! Just kidding. Good job handling that pass, Mike! A true professional.
Experience, knowledge and pure skill are the tree essentials when rolling down that type of terrain in those types of conditions. It is clear to me that you posess all three. Nice job driver.
I am a retired truck driver 30+ years and I was like you I was always the guy in the bad weather and most of the time I loved it but did it long enough to recognize another pro! Brings back lots of memories keep the shiny side up! 👍
I’m a new driver, and I was always told never use the Jake break in rain and snow. But you did sooo good ! Thanks for sharing the knowledge and experience 👍🏻
Puts me in mind about 35 years ago my 10 yr old son & dog & I drove from Vancouver to Calgary on a New Year's Eve to visit my sister through a snow storm. This brought it all back for me. As a Granny now I wonder what I was thinking.
If I'd have stood up while watching this, my chair would have come with me. This is one fantastic lesson on snow covered mountain driving! Thanks so much for the instruction! Now please excuse me while I go change my shorts.
Excellent video showing how to use your JB in an easy and safe way, it will help me a lot as I drive in the state of Colorado thank you very much 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻be safe
It really does, that’s one of the reasons I enjoy the NY- Williamsport run my company does 3 times a day because I’ve done it so much I can zip down those hills knowing right where it gets hairy while the people unfamiliar end up doing about 40-50 the entire way down
You are so calm. There's no tension in your voice at all. I watch your videos because my 2 boys are drivers and I like to see what they can face. They both have 25 years in now. Great video.
Nicely done Riding Shotgun! I grew up around there and have driven Douglas many times. That pass has claimed many trucks and driver's over the years. It is one to give a healthy respect to. Great job on showing how it's done, and without using a lot of brakes, just the Jake's I did like the brake traction test you did at the top. I was taught the same way, always find out what you have to work with, between the road, conditions, tires, load, etc. All play a part in how much brake you can use before it is too much. Sadly most are not taught this, and don't find out until it's too late how much traction there is. Steady momentum up the hill, don't stop or slow too much or that's where you will sit. Smooth on the steering, easy on the throttle, and picking the right speed for your rig at each location. My favorite rig in most any conditions had an 18 speed, two speed rears, Jake brakes AND a retarder. In slippery conditions, the retarder is way smoother to apply, and proportional, not in steps like the Jake is. Mine was on a Johnson bar right next to the trailer brakes. If too much retarder made me slip, a little trailer brake coupled with a little throttle would pull it back in line.
Great video Mike! Driving schools should use this video as a reference. But as you know time and experience is the only way to learn how to stay upright and on the road.
I started driving in 75 here in WV. I never put a set of chains on and I only stopped one time on the side of the road, for a ice covered road. Didn't have a jake in those cheap Kroger trucks. Retired from Kroger and I got myself a truck with a "hood". I'm telling you this so that you know, that I know what you did, only a few drivers would even have the "stones" to try it. I learned on old Rt. 33 going east from I-79 over to Elkins, WV, on the old narrow 2 lane thru the mountains. When I retired in 92 there was just a few autos on the road. Great driving, my hat is off to you.
I understand it’s not nearly in the same league, but towing snowmobile trailers thru similar conditions is how I relate to this, and it’s definitely no joke. Wind vs. trailers and lighter vehicles, hills & mountain passes, slick unpredictable road conditions all can make for an ass puckering drive for sure. Thanks for doing what you do with confidence & skill 👍
Great video. My grandpa, who drove for Takin Brothers out of Omaha/Council Bluffs to the East Coast for MANY MANY years, would have been impressed. He retired in the early 70's after more than 35 years over the road.
I am a woman from Minnesota who has driven thru one Colorado pass (Loveland) ... if I drove this pass in this condition and met a semi I would pass out and go over the edge! I swear Mike is incredible... respect him immensely! Wish all semi drivers were as skilled as he is... I've seen a few ones pull some crazy stuff .. one I actually called his company to tell them about his crazy driving.
Appreciate the identifying of speed and Jake position. Videos often make your speed seem higher than you’re actually going. I’ll share this with our drivers.
I wonder how many Truck drivers that aren’t quite as experienced as you are that you’ve saved just by viewing your videos you are truly a skilled truck driver and I’ve meet a few over the years via girlfriends that were either married or LTR
the best 18 minutes the best ! , amazing hey! make another one like this !!! Nick from greece , once had a small truck years ago you remind me ...good years
Really enjoy watching and learning from a professional. I am not a truck driver, but have often wondered about gearing and the use of jake brakes. Very obvious how stressful this type of driving can be, as you have to pay 100% attention all of the time.
I live and drive in B.C. Canada so I see alot of crappy roads in nasty weather. I have never seen the road in this clip, but wow, that is right up there with some of ours up here like the Kicking Horse pass. Nice job...
Invaluable! Sincerely, I thank you. I'll soon be returning to truck driving after 25 years away from trucking in NW Europe, and will now have to transition to British Columbia mountain conditions. Your video is of great value. The bit that really had my sphincter twitching on your video was that damned unsolicited gear downchange. You rode it well, but I could easily envisage occasions that it could turn your day into a nightmare!
I live in Grand Junction. Just started for H and K. Still in training fresh out of CDL school. Already drove wheeler gulch. I'm here prepping for that mountain road in winter time
Thank you for your video. I had to drive on the 139Hwy last week. It was a beautiful/scary drive. The weather conditions were identical. But thanks to your video I gained enough knowledge and confidence to drive through Douglas Pass in the snow. God Bless my friend!
You, my dear sir, should be a teacher or open your own little classroom!!! I do not know how this ended up on my recommendations, but I've spent the last 3 hours watching and listening to you. There are some peeps out there that need you!!! Hugs from Austin TX!
Thank you Bridget. I appreciate you're comment.. I've been driving since 96 with 16 years strictly mountains up and down ski slopes in various types of commercial vehicles.. if you compared me with a totally inexperienced driver in Winter the difference would be staggering. To give you an idea I once hopped into a six-by-six cement mixer truck sliding towards the cliff with it's chains on and the parking brake set.. I managed to get the truck stopped with two feet left before the front wheels went over. Put it in reverse backed it up on to some sand that was thrown down then continued my day is normal. However a little bit shaken up..

I go much narrower and steeper roads in the Norwegian mountains with 140,000 lbs on the neck, only using the retarder breaks. This is my daily job, at least 5 months in a year. I am doing it for more than 30 years, no accidents. The right equipment is all you need, never hammer down, idling or using the brake pedals when going downhill
Speaking from a driver's standpoint, that IS an odd feeling. You start to question yourself as to whether or not you missed a road closure sign somewhere 😂
Those kind of conditions usually keep the cars at home. They will flood WallyWorld a day or two ahead of a bad forecast, so they don't have to go out until the roads are clear again. Wish my Joe could see this video!
Man, you definitely got balls!. Veil path is a damn awful experience. I went through once and I sweared not ever going through the same again, ever in my life. I literally had my balls in my throat! Was scared as fuck, the truck slid off at one instance and my co-driver took the shoulder trying to avoid hitting a car, the truck almost went sideways almost flipped over. NEVER AGAIN!. Always take the I-80 or far south highways. Don't care about the time for delivery, life has no money price!.

Helps to know the road and whats ahead. Snow looked like the temp was just right to get a good bite--nice ride "driver"
After watching this video I'm convinced that your a Great Driver and if anybody else says different than they don't know shit.
Very good job
Not a fan of automatics, but a big fan of using the spike, esp 2 control Jackknifing
Well done. Very well done.
Good video! Thank you, that was impressive
Great job using the Jake brake and staying off the real brakes. Ever start to worry when you notice your the only one on the road??
Speaking from a driver's standpoint, that IS an odd feeling. You start to question yourself as to whether or not you missed a road closure sign somewhere 😂
Sonora108 I always love being alone on the road during conditions like that. No meatheads to cause problems.
Excelente. Muy linda experiencia.

I speak very little english.
