Have you thought about putting that in a reactor vs just sitting in the bottom of the tank? I am building a 75g and my plan is to fill it with as much of this as possible. The sump i have does not have a refugium area so we shall see how it goes. I would not mind building a reactor to sit outside of my tank to put about 1L to 2L in though. How are you building a reactor for 11 bucks?
I am thinking about using this on my middle chamber in my new 32g BioCube just waiting on the tank to get here to see exactly how the back looks in the tank.
I have used matrix that I used from my saltwater and replace it with Brightwell Aquatics Xport bio and now I want to use my old matrix in my freshwater tank, is that ok? I just rinsed it many times. Ty
Awesome! That sump looks really effecient. Do you struggle to keep some nitrates in your system? After I added matrix, I found that I have to feed extremely heavy to keep nitrates above zero.
That's what I thought. That's a great set up! That media really works. I like to keep my nitrates around 3 because my lps are happier but if i don't put in any extra effort it would easily drop to zero. Great job man. Subbed you
Great video. I bought a small bag and am going to add it to my aquael turbo 2000 which is a great internal sponge filter. Does 2000 litre an hr. This matrix looks like a great alternative to marine pure or eheim ceramic balls
Michael Menges when I made this video the chaeto was just added to the tank. But now I use marinepure spheres. I just built a custom sump for the spheres
Hi there I just wanted to know what kind of filter I should go with because I bought a brand new eshopps r100 which is the refugium Sump I scrap the bio filter with bio balls. I do already have a protein skimmer so what do I put in the refugium section? Can I put a matrix in there and a live plan and which live plant I should go with? I've heard about putting crumbles of rocks and sand but I don't want that stuff to get blown into my main tank. I only have fishes right now and in vertebrates also anemones.
Billy Pipes yes that is true. I like your set up though. Does the matrix need to be in a fast current place or no? Also can I put it in like a media canister? Can it be a alternative to ruble because i don't want to use sand or mud in my sump
Robert Xiong I definitely wouldn't recommend sand in the sump. and matirx works best in a canister filter or reactor. check out my other videos on where I've put it
+EDKsurly I usually shake it out once a month in clean saltwater or rodi. It's not as effective on the bottom of a sump like I used to have it. It works best in a reactor or canister filter. But I would replace the matrix maybe every 18-24 months because the pores could eventually get clogged
while woundering around the hardware store I stumbled on a 1100 gram bag of pumice for £5 not bad price, it was labled as lava rock for bbq, I all ready use red lava rock but testing pumice in my small tank to see what happens
il be useing it in freshwater tank just mussels in there , but I'm curious if it will have a better impact on nitrate compaired to red lava rock and fluval biomax
+bob hill yup....you can't use lava rock in a saltwater aquarium. It will throw the pH off and plus lava rock contains metals in it. It will destroy a reef tank over night.
yep I read about that whike I was researching it , my red lava didn't change my ph , but I'm fairly sure the PUMICE will raid it a bit but how much il have to wait and see, I did a 5 day test 2 large pices in a glass of water it only raised it by about 0.2 , but if I have 1000 grams in a filter it may raise it way higher but il keep a very close eye on it, I did stumble on some info regarding man-made pumice it's identical in structure but made from 100% recycled glass bottles, fairly new stuff used in horticulture as a media, curious if that would truly be inert
Is the Seachem matrix for lifetime? Like can we use this for lifetime with just washing it? Unlike ceramic rings where it requires changes every now and then?
I put some medicine in the my aquarium and that madicine paint my matrix rock hollow collor so that Matrix rock is no more works as good and i need change him or is still good?
@@BillyPipes I put some medicine in the my aquarium and that madicine paint my matrix rock hollow collor so that Matrix rock is no more works as good and i need change him or is still good?

yh that's great it will probably be sat in his tank about 5/6 week as I'm moving house so thanks for the reply buddy. could you check my tank out let me no what u think bro ☺
Cool! I got 1 litre of pond matrix in a bucket out in the yard in old tank water, been outside exactly 1yr warm weather/Cold weather. Do you think they'd be ok to use still? I run a saltwater tank and have a block of Marine Pure in it but it's not working for denitrification so i was thinking about dumping the matrix in. I actually have a mixture of pond matrix and seachem denitrate (500ml) and some marine pure spheres (2quarts) worth. Thinking of getting them all out of retirement and setting up my refugium with all those. Any tips would be great!
@@Kashif314 some of the matrix will float at first so just be prepared for that. And if it's in a canister filter or hob filter a media bag would be best.
@@BillyPipes thanks dear. I ll put inside a canister filter. Can I use any net kind of bag like the one you have in your videos or do I need to buy bag made by Seachem?
Nope. We actually tried that with two different types of pumice at my shop. They leached out massive amounts of nasty stuff. My buddy boiled pumice and let it dry out and repeated the process 3 times. Tank was running for 2 years. Then he put it in his tank and 3 months later he tore the tank down because of what it leached out. Matrix is proven. Why risk putting something in your tank when matrix itself is so inexpensive
I'm getting into aquascaping but I don't understand what all these technical things are and what they do. I see all these tanks with like 3 or 4 different glass things hanging off the side and all these complicated filtration systems. And co2 setups, it's all so confusing
Looking to do a freshwater tank, and leaning towards co2. I was thinking about setting it up ontop of my dresser but I almost feel like I should try and get a cabinet along with the tank to store all this stuff tanks seem to need
i have this media. and i regret getting this one. its not that efficient in a Wet/Dry filter(Trickle Filter) it is only effective in submerge or cannister. thats why i switch to Biohome Ultimate.
Melania Wong yea. the directions for this one says works best in canister/heavy flow. the pond matrix is best for trickle system because it has bigger pores
Reefing with Billy Pipes infact mine is a Matrix pond. and i really dont like it, its terrible. i got 4kls of it, and i really regret matrix. for all the seachem products ive used i only like Prime, but for their media, it really is horrible. now it really makes me think its like pumice. its really expensive media, but i really regret having it.
Melania Wong that's too bad. it is a pumice. they have the best refinery location for it. you might want to give them a call and ask them a few questions on it like I did. hope you find something that works better for you and your system
Reefing with Billy Pipes no offense sir, but im an arowana keeper. but for me As a trickle filter user. bioballs and ceramic ring combination works better than this. maybe other may like matrix, but i dont like it in my expirience. i rather go for seachem purigen than matrix

pretty clean?!?!? Your sump is SPOTLESS!!!!!!

ReefMoore 103 thanks!👍
I'm a newbie so I'm not sure how to use this product. I put it in my tank but the water keeps getting more cloudy. What am I supposed to do?
This product is to help with beneficial Bacteria. I would run carbon to help get the water clear
How long did it take for your matrix to get the anirobic bacteria so that the nitrates were getting processed
I honestly didn't keep track. I was fairly new to the hobby when I made this video and didn't keep good records of things

I liked that peanut m&m analogy
Lol👍
didn't do anything to my nitrates. had a serious amount of it for a relatively small tank for countless months and it did nothing.
Can I rinse the new patch with tap water for the first time then the aquarium water for later changes?
Yup👍
Did the denitrate rocks killed the Chaeto? I’m planning to do the same but I don’t have too much space so I was planning to put both of them together
Nope. Its perfectly fine with the chaeto👍
Billy Pipes thanks I’m gonna try this
What would you recommend for a 6’ saltwater tank? Pond or normal matrix
Pond
How do you know the matrix is removing the nitrate and not the chaeto doing it?

Robert Xiong yup. that's what I did
Hi
Is matrix good for a wet dry filter?
Cameraman2419 I believe seachem recommends using pond matrix for a system like that.
Effective or not if put it in top filter..or put it in my tanks for remove nitrate?
It will help with nitrates. It works best when water flows through it like in a canister filter .
how long do you leave the matrix in for?
