What the campaign team behind CODA did great was leading the race so late, that the fact it's a remake didn't hit the news. I seriously felt this would have hurt its chances. Then again there were three other remakes that year.
People were reaching to give anything but Power of the Dog best picture because it went over a lot of heads and it was the front runner the whole race. The moment the CODA team started getting awards I knew it was winning because of how charismatic the cast was
CODA is a perfectly good movie, but giving it Best Picture told me a lot. I don’t believe every Best Picture nominee or winner has to be some hugely analytical think piece (most from the past aren’t), but they need to be better than CODA. That said, I don’t believe CODA is one of the worst Best Picture winners. Jane Campion absolutely deserved Best Director. There was a bunch of wonderful craft and care put into The Power of the Dog, and she did an excellent job helping put it all together. Will Smith getting Actor in a Leading Role for King Richard….no. I don’t think Will Smith is a bad actor, but he has not given a performance other than maybe The Pursuit of Happyness where he deserved even a nomination. His dramatic Oscar bait performances often come off as “take me seriously” rather than an authentic excellent performance. My pick probably would have been Andrew Garfield for “Tick…Tick…Boom!” within that category. The one I would have chosen didn’t even get a nomination, and that is Nic Cage in “Pig.” Jessica Chastain is an excellent actress, but I do not believe she should have received Actress in a Leading Role for this. It’s a decent performance, but half the time I just felt like she was going for it rather than completely succeeding. My pick would have been Penelope Cruz in “Parallel Mothers” within the nominations and overall. She blew my mind here, and it’s easily one of the best performances of her career. She brings an incredible amount of empathy and compassion towards a character who did something terrible. It’s a complex and complicated role, and she nailed it. Not a lot of people talk about that performance or that film at the moment, but I believe that will change with time. The film as a whole is excellent, and Penelope Cruz’s performance is a wonderful addition. Troy Kotsur is hands down the best addition to CODA, and I love his triumph here. While CODA is not one of my favorite films of 2021, I believe within the nominations he is the best one here. Ariana DeBose killed it in “West Side Story.” I’m not upset by any means that she received Actress in a Supporting Role because it is a wonderful performance. I just loved Kirsten Dunst’s performance in “The Power of the Dog” more. Belfast getting Original Screenplay is trash. The Worst Person in the World or Licorice Pizza are better screenplays and films overall. CODA getting Adapted Screenplay doesn’t surprise me, but is disappointing. The Power of the Dog and Drive My Car (which was my personal pick for Best Picture within those nominations) are much more finely written. I understand why Encanto received Best Animated Feature. It was the most popular one, and is an honest to God great film. That said, my pick would have been The Mitchell’s vs The Machines. I just have more fun with that one. Also, maybe this is not a popular opinion but I don’t always have those, Luca is excellent and definitely one of the best Pixar films. Drive My Car is an excellent pick for International Picture. The Worst Person in the World is a close second. Summer of Soul is an incredible pick for Documentary feature, as would have been Flee (which was also a wonderful nomination in International Feature). It was overshadowed by the infamous slap seen around the world, but go take a look at Questlove’s speech. One of the best of that night. When it comes to Best Original Score, I genuinely believe within the category Dune definitely deserved it. It’s an excellent score. I also remember thinking, “Oh no…they’re ignoring Spencer.” For Best Song, I would have chosen “Be Alive” from King Richard over “No Time to Die.” I think it’s tired to just give Best Song to a 007 film just because it’s a 007 film. “Be Alive” is excellent, and a well deserved nomination. Don’t get me wrong, I do like “No Time to Die,” but it’s not close to being one of the best 007 songs. “Diamonds Are Forever” and “Skyfall” are those for me. Dune deserved Best Sound. Dune is an excellent pick for Production Design with the category. A lot of love, care and detail is displayed on the screen. That said, Spencer really was just going to stay ignored with the exception of one category. As was the incredible Parallel Mothers. Dune is a wonderful pick for Cinematography, The Power of the Dog being a close second. And yet again…we are really ignoring Spencer in all but one category, as well as Parallel Mothers in most. If there’s one thing I do like about The Eyes of Tammy Faye, it’s the makeup. I do not like Cruella, but the costumes are stunning and deserved Costume Design. I wish the amount of care that went into the costumes went into the screenplay. I love Dune, but I believe Tick Tick Boom deserved Editing just a tad more. Dune is an incredible pick for Visual Effects, Shang-Chi being a close second.
I mean he was, but people really like it when they can give someone their first Oscar (especially when it's seen as overdue) for a good/great performance. Same reason Gary Oldman won over Kaluuya and Chalamet.
Question: If the Academy would have had only 5 pictures nominated for Best Picture like they used to do for many decades, do you think that CODA would have been nominated for Best Picture?
Last year's lead actress line-up were all white women and no one complained about it 😂 Jessica was good in "Tammy Fay" but she's always great. Honestly I don't even remember much about that movie. She won because of the narrative. The same goes for Will Smith, i forgot all about "King Richard" already
Mitchells, Luca or Flee would've been far more deserving winners. Honestly, Flee winning would have been the best way to say "fuck you" to the Oscars after they said animation is a genre for kids.
@@sigmauster4879 No, Raya was a legitimately bad film and only got the nomination because it was Disney. I enjoy Encanto a lot but the other three were much better.
CODA won adapted last year because the Oscars already predetermined their best picture winner but had to give a non-acting above the line win to it. End of story.
I mean CODA was such a forgettable film to me - like it was a mediocre unoriginal coming of age story we’ve seen a thousand times but just with a deaf cast involved. Don’t get me wrong, it was fine, the whole movie was decent. But that is just what it was: decent. Nothing about it was memorable - not the directing, not the screenplay, nor score, nor production design, nor cinematography. The performances were fantastic by the parents (both Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin were equally great imo), and the Emilia Jones gave a good performance. But it just wasn’t good enough to be unironically labelled the ‘best movie’. This was totally a token pick b/c it had a deaf cast so #representation so they feel good about themselves. Again, it was a fine film, just not great in ANY respect whatsoever. They gave the movie best picture not because it was a great movie in any way but because of what it could/does represent …. Which kinda rubs me the wrong way. CODA is only memorable for the award it won, otherwise it would be forgotten really quickly. I would easily have given the award to Dune due to how revolutionary it was to adapt what was considered strictly unadaptable source material and truly not just make it work but work so freaking well. Power of the Dog was excellent as well in almost every aspect - its directing was phenomenal, the performances were unsettling and engrossing, the cinematography was stellar. Even Nightmare Alley was better than CODA - its Shakespearean tale of power was honestly so engrossing. Don’t Look Up was bold, if messy and flawed. West Side Story was excellent in every regard but its script and some of its cast (Ariana DeBose and Mike Faist were the only ones i though were phenomenal) … like there were so many better pics just right there. But CODA got it cus vibes i guess.
I think CODA is a lovely little movie and I am happy that it got some recognition… but BEST PICTURE? It has no distinctive style at all. I guess the competition just wasn’t that exciting either
I think Jane Campion would have won Director even if Villeneuve was there. The Williams sisters thing wasn’t great, but she apologized and the Academy is full of white men who wouldn’t care about that. And also, she just deserved it
Dune should've won best picture. CODA was a terrible film. If you took out the fact this was about deaf people playing deaf people, this would be a nothing special film.
Still can't believe a Hallmark movie beat eight legitimately great films and also Don't Look Up
Really upsetting.
What the campaign team behind CODA did great was leading the race so late, that the fact it's a remake didn't hit the news. I seriously felt this would have hurt its chances. Then again there were three other remakes that year.
It's not even the first remake to win Best Picture. Ben-Hur was a remake. Marty was a remake of a TV movie. That's just off the top of my head.
@@Windupchronic and The Departed.
Drive My Car deserved Adapted Screenplay.

CODA is good! Giving it Best Picture was insane!
CODA was my personal favorite movie of that year so I'm glad it won
This will clearly be taken negatively but idc, let's give it to the Deaf movie. Please, Undeserved!!!
@@timgriffin3368 not only that, but it was a remake of a French movie
Very mid winners, happy that this year looks to be better
The sublime Drive My Car was simply the most deserving of the bunch.
The Power of the Dog wasn’t even my favorite of the nominees but I was still hoping it would win. It would have been a great winner.
Andrew Garfield should have one- objectively
yo your camera setup is WORKING! lighting and colours are great in this vid
I love these types of videos 🎉

Will Smith sweeping over Benedict Cumberbatch will never not gonna be weird to me. I thought Cumberbatch in Power of the Dog was miles ahead of Smith

saw CODA on a list of movies that should have never won an oscar. couldn't agree more
Coda winning was and is really cringe
holy shit! it’s the film drunk!!
Were you expecting someone else?
I love that "... did the thing" has taken off and is just synonymous with DeBose by now
best thing that show was the slap lmaoooo
Question: If the Academy would have had only 5 pictures nominated for Best Picture like they used to do for many decades, do you think that CODA would have been nominated for Best Picture?
I don't think so
It was an underwhelming year so CODA was a proper winner
last year had some of the most exciting surprises on nomination morning and some of the most boring forgettable wins on Oscar night
Nah

The dune hive will be on the right side of history!
The power of the dog being overlooked in so many places is kind of absurd but Coda is ok overall. Not my favorite for an artistic value movie lol
Belfast was awesome bro!!!!
I feel more annoyed with Encanto winning Animated film than CODA winning Best Picture
