    Someone finally said it! Bolt action 5.7x28 for the win. I’m dying for one. I want to see Ruger make one on their 77/22 action with an 18” or 20” barrel. I’d buy one as soon as it hits the market. They could make one with a walnut stock and blued steel and then another in a synthetic stock and stainless steel. Threaded from the factory, 6-8 round rotary magazine. It would be amazing.

      Well, they did take a concept of the pdw and turn it into a rifle sized carbine, that totally makes the cartridge worthless. So unless you throw a bunch of money to take it down to a pdw size it's does nothing better then an ar at the same sizeish

The cartridge “worth” would be less to someone parked in the “he hates everything “ lane of Life, and even less to someone who didn’t know that typical 5.56 velocity is less out of a 10” barrel than 5.7 out of 16”

      I like my FN Browning better, it's an "early" Hi power made at the FNH factory in Belgium that Browning had partnered with to make and sell product over there and the Germans captured it and put it in service for them and then my grandfather removed it from a Nazi officer that didn't need it anymore! Of course it didn't get fired for decades since it was hard to get 9mm in America prior to the late seventies!

    I ran into these three years ago when a local gun store got a PS90 to sell, I was interested but, very unknowing about the 5.7 so researched it a little and was interested but not enough to spend $1350 at the gun store five miles across s state line from so I went to an in state store and bought a Ruger57 and really liked the pistol and was very impressed with the round so I went back and got the PS90, it was rapidly gaining popularity and had jumped to $1475 and I hurried up and snagged it, the guy I was dealing with told me I came just in time as he was supposed to up it again to $1600!

    30:13 This very much, with a couple modifications:
    (1) CZ shouldn't use their 600 platform as-is, instead they should scale the action down for PCC-only use (perhaps a downsized 600 Trail) no need for the added weight; and
    (2) reimplement the swappable bolt-face/barrel functionality on this PCC action (along with mag-well adapters) to allow hot-swapping to other pistol calibers (9mm, 45 acp, 10mm, 357 mag, etc).
    Though CZ couldn't get the barrel swaps to work with the full-power rifle cartridges safely, they did for their rimfires in the 457. Query whether a PCC version would be more like the latter than the former.

    Runs like a dream
    It is silly how far you can accurately hit targets repeatedly
    I think 5.7 is having a renaissance.
    It just makes SO MUCH SENSE in a handgun when it comes to recoil and shots on target.
    I REALLY want to see a copper hot load like a Black Dragon Fang on that bear skull you all tested!
    If a 9mm is viable for bear defense... would a hot monolithic copper projectile do the job?
    Consider the fact of just how many rounds you can put on target at a farther distance.
    I think it needs to be tested!

    The hand guard ; Same fitment on the carbine but to cut it, the holes don’t line up. It will end up looking like a hack job. In fact, I think that one anti-gun gun magazine did a piece on making an MP7 out of the LC Carbine, and it looked like they cut it with a hatchet.
    The barrel; This barrel length is nom. 200fps slower than the LC Carbine. The velocity loss happens to be at a critical node of punched hole terminal ballistic transitioning to “wound channel” terminal ballistic.
    Reloading; presently getting 2,900 fps out a 16” barrel with Longshot and 35gr bullets. Going to turn my own solids because LeHigh doesn’t market XTreme Penetrator bullets in the caliber.
    Magazines; The grip is too short for a man anyway, the Tandemcross extensions afford good purchase and a few more rounds. On Earth and carpeted floor, they do not come apart when dropped loaded. I will not try to break one on a hard floor.
    Other; Tandemcross trigger is okay. Sig MCX stock is far better in every way than Ruger’s stock. The gun is a tad heavy but the added barrel length and cleanliness is so much better feeding through the grip, for this caliber there is no other way. S&W’s roller delay system is superior if they end up making a carbine. Blood does not easily come out of the grip (you must wash it) and the grip makes your hand raw when shooting a lot.

    I do keep a PS 90, in my go bag I take with me all the time. I also picked up a 5.7 ruger pistol a couple years ago. It's very finiky to reload, the polymer coated cases get stuck, in the dies. I've reloaded thousands of rounds, had maybe 2 cases get stuck in all other cals I've reloaded. With the 5.7, I've had around a dozen with about 2k reloaded. I think it's just the polymer coating on the case. Which was a design feature to keep the case inside the chamber just long enough for the pressure to drop. The cleaning of the cases is also a special process over just regular tumbling.

    I have a Ruger 57, which I love, but I can’t see the point of the LC. It’s basically a 57 with longer barrel and stock slapped on it. 5.7x28 is a great pistol cartridge in my opinion, but if you’re using a carbine or rifle you may as well just get something in 556. More powerful cartridge, more availability and much cheaper to shoot.

  • @chipsterb4946
    @chipsterb4946 Месяц назад

    I understand the 5.7x28 for Jimmy’s situation where nuisance critters around a farm need killin’. I was going to (and still will) suggest the relatively new Ruger LC 45 as a good, general purpose PCC option, especially if you are thinking subsonic. 230 grain 45 ACP is subsonic almost by definition. If you are going subsonic, a .452” diameter that weighs 230 grains is “better” than any 9mm or 5.7 projectile moving the same speed. The ammo is relatively cheap and available everywhere. The handguard is long enough to give you room for your support hand forward of the charging handle. (An angled fore grip helps me be consistent with where my left hand goes.) Glock 21 mags also are cheap and ubiquitous. The 16” barrel does make it longer, but it also eliminates regulatory uncertainties. Plus .45 ACP can benefit from the longer barrel.
    Recoil for the LC 45 is noticeable and a bit odd. It’s not “hard” but the bolt needed for .45 ACP blowback operation (especially +P which the LC 45 can handle) really is a chunky monkey. The initial push back is followed by the clunk of the bolt returning to battery. I just got mine so am not used to shooting it; however, it takes me longer to get back on target compared to a very lightweight AR-15. Still, it’s a hoot to shoot.

  • @jimyeats
    @jimyeats Месяц назад

    I won’t compare the 5.7x28 on paper to the 22 WMR and act like there aren’t differences in velocity exc, but functionally they fill a similar role: A marginal defensive round (but a big step up from a 22lr), and a fun low recoil ranch gun that gives you performance out to about 125-150 yards. The big advantage the 5.7 has is better centerfire reliability and better velocity from shorter barrels.
    Its varmint and small game performance for me has not been good though for me, at least with the common loads available. The 27gr green tip zips through rabbits and coyotes without doing anything, leaving me with a wounded animal that isn’t dead, and unless you are at a pretty close range with the 40gr blue ballistics tip that loses velocity so quickly that it doesn’t fragment or expand beyond around 75-100 yards, in my experience.

    Shooting with a folded stock: if a gun is marketed or used as a PDW then it has to do PDW things. One thing PDWs are good for is being deployed in a vehicle or quickly deployed from a bag.
    If deployed from a bag a concern is how quickly the gun can get into action, can you draw the gun as a reaction to a threat and fire it quickly or is there some assembly required.
    Inside a vehicle its nice to have the stock folded as it helps one manuver and carry one. If the gun can only fire with the stock deployed then it offers little benefit over a compact AR in that regard.

    IMHO, we the American gun market are REALLY blowing it on this.
    The 5.7 is not enough to be a useful swiss army knife.
    The 10mm, 357 mag and the 30 carbine are MUCH closer to being truly useful.
    Perhaps the 30 supercarry, 7.62x25 and 7.5 fk brno would be a decent alternatives, but are either too rare or slightly inadequate.
    IMHO, an up-pressured 30 carbine with a shoulder and 6mm bullet would be GREAT.
    Or the 9x25 dillon.
    Or a sliggtly shortened 300 blk case with smaller bullets, maybe 7mm.
    A true PDW round that isnt just meant to pen 90s soft armor in 50 round mags with full auto... but a versatile semi auto round that shines in 6-10" bbls, and has real a$$ behind it, but the mag fits in the grip.

    The ARMSCOR/RIA 22TCM would have been competion for the 5.7x28 if ARMSCOR/RIA had not kept the 22TCM proprietary... RIA made their own 1911 22TCM/9mm combo using the 9mm magazine for both, a Glock conversion kit which uses the 9mm magazine and RIA made a 22TCM bolt action rifle. ARMSCOR/RIA made an unwise business decision to keep it proprietary and not release the specs to SAAMI. The 5.7x28 is now gaining in availability and poularity! Ok 5.7 was not just a trend or Fad cartridge that died. I think the patent finally ran out on the 5.7 under FN. For decades the 5.7 was only available from FN as were guns, to my knowledge. It was always astronomically priced ammo, and guns were expensive as well imho. Now that its out in the wild, we have Ruger, Palmetto, S&W, FN, etc all making 5.7 and many ammo makers now making ammo. All in just a couple years! I researched 5.7 and 22TCM years ago and bought the 22TCM doublestack 1911 pistol because it is USA brass cased, a 223 Remington based case, same 40 grain bullet, and MUCH lower cost. It was 2000-2100 fps! (a bit faster than the 5.7) for pennies a round. Unfortunately RIA has held onto 22TCM just like FN did with 5.7 for 45 years, and they wont even get it SAMMI certified, so the only source for cases or ammo is Armsor. Yes, they make nice brass or nickel plated rounds and its cheap! However there wont be other gun makers or ammo suppliers. Both are great, but it just shows what poor business decisions have affected both of these similar rounds and kept them bottled up for decades until recently. This is why monopolies suck for consumers! BTW, RIA makes a couple different 22TCM Bolt guns! Also a United States patent application for the 5.7's projectile design used in the SS90 was filed by FN's Jean-Paul Denis and Marc Neuforge in 1989. U.S. Patent 5,012,743 ("High-Performance Projectile") was received in 1991. I believe that is the naughty projectile that we citizens are not allowed to have in the US (which is also ridiculous.)

      That's not how those numbers work. When you see 5.7x28, 5.7mm is the caliber (diameter) of the bullet and 28mm is the effective length of the case. A 5.56x45 is actually smaller in caliber, but with a longer case: 45mm

    If the civilian crowd that is poo pooing the 5.7 could see the "LE/Military Only" 27gr black tip, they would fall silent. The 5.7x28 was originally developed to replace the 9mm. I have personal experience actually using this round in an
    "Official" capacity. The 27gr black tip starts to tumble after 2in of penetration. The velocity of this round is also hundreds of FPS faster than the fastest civilian loading. It leaves a devastating wound chanal. It doesn't matter if its bare skin or soft body armor, it tumbles after 2in. In CQB scenarios with torso hits, not a single bullet exited the body. In the LE world, that is golden. With the pistol it will penetrate soft body armor out to 50 meters. In the P90, the soft armor penetration extends to 200 meters.
    So, I believe it does a great job replaceing the 9mm.

    • @calangel
      @calangel Месяц назад

      It does a great job of replacing 9mm ball. That's about it. There are modern 9mm loads that do most of the niche jobs that 5.7 can do all while having more proven lethality.

    • @doylethorn9251
      @doylethorn9251 Месяц назад

      I would love to see the "more proven lethality" research you speak of. Especially if it is compared to the LE/Military round. It didn't exist when I was using it on duty. And you might want to let the Secret Service know about it. They are still using the 5.7 to this day for Presidential protection.
