One of the most useful pieces of advice I got before I went to Thailand was don't walk on unlit country roads at night. Because mopeds and motorbikes tend to be ridden in the gutters on the edges of these back roads at night, out of harm's way of other bigger vehicles. As a result many pedestrians get hit by bikes at night. Get a tuk-tuk or a cab.
I've watched a lot of "Thailand/Phuket first timer" videos and must say that this is one of the best. I've been going since 1990 with over 20 trips, so I know what's BS and what's not. Most are are no better than common sense to the point of being banal. Very well done. Why do I watch ? Nostalgia. Going back Feb. 2019. Kob khun ma krap.
I am debating on a trip to Coron Philippines or Phuket. What do you think I will like better? I will be traveling with wife so even though I drink she not going to let me party all night. She likes things mellow, I like some partying.
Thank you for the amazing documentary you did. Very informative! Absolutely loving your videos! I was in Phuket recently.I would like to recommend the ORANGE CAR PHUKET cheap car rental service, as many people can't leave now because of COVID-19, and taxis are not profitable because of the high cost. On March 15, 2020, I rented two Toyota Sienta passenger vans for 500 baht a day, and it was a great idea. Excellent customer service. The guys were very friendly and helpful and I booked the car easily and quickly. I highly recommend their service and I will definitely contact them again!
Forgotten about this great informative video until it popped in my 'watch again' list. All still relevant but could do with an update as a lot has changed in 2 years
You prolly dont care at all but does anybody know of a way to get back into an Instagram account? I stupidly lost the account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
The street food is more than just "o-k" to eat. It's fantastic and as Thai people rely heavily on street food, you know it's got to be good. Dig in! Great vid and thanks for sharing.
Really helpful advice. I am going this year and I am sure I will come across similar situations. I fell foul to a taxi driver a couple of years ago there. I was at a fishing complex but had arranged a day off to see the sights of Hua Hin. I agreed a time he was supposed to pick me up to take me back from outside a big shopping complex. He just didn’t return at the agreed time. I waited an extra 1/2 hour because the traffic was bad. Still no show. I tried to phone the card he left me but maybe because of the code I couldn’t get through. So there i was stranded in town an hours drive from my room and it was going dark. Only then I realised as I had booked through an agent I didn’t actually have a telephone number for the little villa complex at all. I had the name of the place but it was a small village location. I tried to ring my original booking contact but couldn’t get through. I was left now with the option of trying to book another taxi back from an office outside the shopping complex, not wanting to wander too far in case the driver turned up or I got lost in the dark. I showed them my little contact card for the fishing lake complex, in English of course. They couldn’t help, didn’t know where it was. This was no longer funny. Next option was to get to a hotel with English speaking staff, stay overnight, maybe get internet access and someone to arrange for a taxi driver who knew where the lake was to take me back. In the end it was someone in the taxi office who got hold of my driver from the number on the card he had left me. They were amazing and seemed genuinely annoyed that he left me in the lurch. They got nothing out of sorting it out and refused a tip for doing so. He finally turned up 1 1/2 hours late. Trying to say something about a different time which was bull. I think he took on other fairs while I was waiting and couldn’t get back in time. There was an awkward “silent” return taxi journey I can tell you. The resort recommended the driver, employed him often. They became worried when I wasn’t back for an evening meal. What I learned from this, well firstly there are some wonderful genuine people about in Thailand and ultimately it was local people saved my bacon wanting nothing in return. Secondly I went on this excursion alone, I would have been far better to team up with someone for the day if I could, far safer. Thirdly, and my big mistake, make sure you have contact telephone numbers for back up and have checked they work on your phone. And make sure you have a full address of your location so someone else can find it is you need them too. An isolated villa and lake at the end of a long little used track will not be a normal route for any local driver not dedicated to that location. May sure too your phone is fully charged too. I was expecting more people in Thailand to understand basic English that I found to be the case. Big cities and major hotels no doubt are different. I have fortunately been to many foreign parts on vacation but this is the first time I felt stranded and unable to communicate properly with anyone. Finally just because someone nods their head and you think they have understood the arrangement you have made do not assume they understand English well enough to have got it right. Always, always have back up contact telephone numbers you know will work and a charged phone you know will work...oh yeah and don’t lose your phone! Lol
Nice video summary. One small inaccuracy - at 10:33, "The ubiquitous Phuket Tuk-Tuk" is actually a Songtaew - a pickup truck with benches installed in the bed for passengers. A Tuk-Tuk is a motorcycle with a passenger addition in the back.

Good video with a lot of good information for a tourist. If you're planning a trip to Phuket this is good info for you. What was left out in this video are some real gems (truths) you need to know. First off Thais are insane and uneducated drivers throughout the whole country...but on Phuket they are even worse. Here is the real story for you while driving in Thailand, walking and most important trying to cross the street: "Thailand tops road death ranking list NATIONWIDE: Thailand now tops the rankings as the country with the highest death rate in road accidents, according to one global survey." I'm a great surfer and swimmer and I have had to save a few tourists on Surin Beach. Surin Beach is called the Kings Beach...but you won't find any bathrooms on the beach or enough trash cans. As a result the beach is littered to death by the Thais. So us locals, both Thais and Farangs get together on Saturdays to clean the beach up from the majority of Thais that just throw garbage everywhere. I love Thailand and put up with this and do my best to educate the Thais about the environment. Go to any 7/11 in Thailand and they love to give you a plastic bag for a bottle of water and 5 plastic straws. We have a major plastic problem here. When you come to visit bring your own bags to the store. Refuse plastic straws, spoons, forks, etc... I speak Thai and have lived in Thailand for 13 years and it's sad to see Phuket's once clean seas a mess. I first came Phuket over 30 years ago while I was living in Tokyo and when I lived in Hong Kong. I flew here at least one or two times a month, vacationed for months at a time before I decided to call Thailand my home. Come here and have fun, be aware the Thais drive like lunatics, prices are very high, this island is not cheap. If you want cheap go to Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Udon Thani or other areas. Dining out in a good to great restaurant in Surin Beach, Bang Tao Beach, Cherng Talay Boat Avenue and Laguna areas you will be paying close to what you spend at home. In my opinion you will find great dining value at the Black Cat Restaurant, Sunset, Pesto and The Red Tuna, all within walking distance in the Cherng Talay/ Laguna area. You want 5 star food and a beautiful ambiance then go to Taste on Srisoonthorn Road in Bang Tao, it's right across the street from Tesco Lotus, it's a bit pricey if you buy a bottle of wine, but has fantastic food and it's less expensive than what you would pay for a meal like this back home. Also keep in mind that wine and spirits have a very high duty tax and they will cost you a lot more than what you pay at home. I hope this was informative and sorry I had to reveal the whole truth about our Island and country.
