I like to say that my hobby is just Books. That includes: reading books, buying books, displaying books, annotating books, talking about books, watching videos about books. For me, anything to do with books is part of that big hobby and I feel happy doing anything to do with books! (Also, I love Armchair Books! I live about 2 hours North of Edinburgh but I always make an effort to pop in whenever I’m down. It’s also right around the corner from the cat cafe which is a massive plus)

What I love the most about buying a book (books, let’s be real here) is the history behind it. I always buy secondhand books and just love the thought of someone else owning it and loving it. The thought of someone else reading it and feeling the same things I do when reading it, just makes it all the more special to me. And if there’s a name and date inside?? (Deep sighs and clutching it to my chest) I just wish I could tell them I’m looking after it now, it wasn’t thrown away after they were gone. Someone is still loving it 🥺

I wanted to practice my writing in English so here are my answers:
    1. Buying books is so fun because is like buying tickets to immerse yourself in other worlds.
As you say, we need to consume content with context and understand that for you this is your job and not to compare our shelves with the ones we see on the internet. In my case, I actually prefer to read ebooks and only buy the ones I really like on beautiful editions.
    2. I ask for books on my birthday and on any special occasion and the rest of the time I do my best to read for free. So like five or six times a year in total.
    3. Bookstore!!!
    4. The one im going to own one day ☝️ but in reality, I just wished there were more bookstores around me.
    5. My TBR is so long that I never think about new releases, so I have never preordered a book.
    6. it has never occurred to me to set a monthly limit, so I don’t have one.
    7. I don’t even have a wishlist; I test my luck every time I go to the library to see what I can find.

I prefer to read e-books too when I'm reading something for the first time. When I end up loving the book that's when I buy a physical copy. Almost all of my physical books are literary fiction, because I find those are the kind of books that impact me the most and linger in my mind the longest. Not to be a book elitist, but I never buy physical copies of popcorn horror books, thrillers, and romance; I just don't see the point cause I usually just read them once and never again 😅

I've pre-ordered only one book ever in my life. The book was scheduled to be delivered like 2 or 3 days after release day but then on release day, I went to the bookstore and the book was everywhere, I had to stop myself from buying it knowing it was coming. That kind of put of me off from pre-ordering books but... I mostly read books from the library because cost & living in a small apartment, I don't have that much space so i wish i could pre-order more to support authors but i can't. I have a long TBR but for some reason i always forget about it when i want to pick a new book to read lol

I am so bad at both reading and buying books. I also work at a big box bookstore, so I get my books with a specific discount. This is why I have over 700 books I haven't read yet. Not including manga and graphic novels.
However, my local library district is also considering shutting down 3 libraries, because of a number of things, such as more ebook users, the pandemic, cost of books, etc. With that in mind, I am doing a Save the Library ban, starting after I purchase Michael Crichton/James Patterson's Eruption (because I stan MC, and I am reading through MC's entire catalogue. Eruption came out today). So, this is the rules of the ban:
    1. It's for x-months. I am going to do a month at a time, and see how far I go.
    2. All pre-orders are locked in. No more pre-orders until the end of the ban. But, specific, known series I know and love, and ONLY THOSE, are exceptions- I will pre-order those.
    3. For every book I read and don't want to keep, I keep it in a box until I can donate the entire box to the library for their big donation sale (unless they're not taking books at all). I've bought new books like crazy, some old ones, and I'm sure they can sell them, or maybe help supplement their own inventory for loaners.
    4. Instead of buying books from my store, each time I get the itch, I don't. I write down the amount of money I would have spent and at the end of the month, I give the money to the library as a donation.
I am HOPING I can stick to this.
    *
If you're looking to condense, here's a suggestion from a Booktuber named Jaysen Headley (Eezekat). He's doing something he likes to call Project Shelf Control. He's going through his books on each shelf, from top to bottom, to figure out "What's got to stay, and what's got to go". If he read it and liked it, he keeps it on there. If he read it but doesn't see himself rereading it, he unhauls it. If he hasn't read it, then he reads it immediately. He has his shelves arranged by color, which gives him a variety of books to read immediately... he's not reading the same author over and over again.
Just some thoughts, love your content, and hope you're able to cut down on your TBR 😊

    1. The potential held within that book. You don't know what's going to happen on its pages. You could love it, hate it, it could make you think or cry or laugh. And there's something about physically holding it that makes that experience and excitement about its potential more real that downloading something on a kindle or clicking on a thumbnail on audible. I feel the same way about library books. I don't have to physically own it, but the physical book is more enthralling to me. I do read ebooks and audiobooks, but I just love the physical books.
    2. Um....... it WAS weekly at one point. Yikes. But lately, its been about once a month. Maybe twice a month. Typically I pick up around 6 books per haul. Most often from my local used book stores. But I read about 12 books per month, so I'm reading as much or more than I'm writing.
    3. Bookstore hands down. I do buy specific recommendations online when I cant find them at a store.
    4. I'm still looking for my favorite bookshop. There are 2 independent bookstores in my town that are lovely but a bit far from me. And I love ALL the independent Bookstores in Nevada City, CA. But I'm hoping to go to more on the West Coast, US in the next couple years.
    5. I dont really pre-order books. Sorry. 😕 I also know I should. I geuss I just have so many books already In excited about and then when it comes to acquiring books, I usually get excited about them when I discover them in the store. I'm just not in the know about whats not out yet that I would care about.
    6. Hmmmm.... probably should. But buying mostly used helps keep it from getting too crazy.
    7. .....154 I feel so called out! Lol

I'm bored so here are my answers:
    1. i love buying books because I want to dive into a new story. I love the thought of being well educated about humans/ emotions/ the world and what better way to educate yourself than through reading? People say you can't learn from fiction but it just teaches you lessons about life and about being human. I love that.
Why physical books? They look, feel and SMELL great. I'm a lot on my phone so I like to do something off screen. Reading ebooks hurts my eyes and it always feels like a burden. Also digital things stress me out. The device can break, things can get deleted or unavailable. Is it really mine? I want to have my books with me, visible and accessible in my bookshelf. Love the wine collecting anecdote
    2. when I enter a bookstore, have money available and find a book that appeals to me
    3. I love the atmosphere of a good bookstore and I love just picking up books that catch my eye but if I already know exactly which book I need I just order it online.
    4. favorite? That's tough. Honestly I know one. It's my favorite because it's well organized, I know where to find things and it has a cafe but there are so many places with different vibes and aesthetics I can't only pick one.
    5. pre- order? Not really. Did it once or twice. Don't know the last one but the next: your book
    6. no
    7. a lot... I also take pictures of books and then forget about them 😂

I understand the addiction of looking for and buying books - it is a rush, but when I get to a certain point usually when my shelves are full and I have piles accumulating I start to get a bit twitchy. I do love finding books for other people and recommending books too but then I have worked for 12 years in public libraries.
How about you start a new ritual? You look for and photograph books in book shops but then try to borrow as many as you can from libraries rather than buy them new. You’d be supporting the library service ‘use it or lose it’ and saving so much money which could go into a fund for a fabulous trip - Good Luck! It’s a difficult one, esp when it’s also your job
Personally I buy very few brand new, maybe one or two at Christmas and around my Birthday but I do buy many second hand, and also borrow alot from the library

the last book i preordered was unlearning shame by devon price! i've only ever preordered three books (the other two being rest is resistance by tricia hersey and platonic by marisa g franco) -- all of which are nonfiction titles that i knew i'd love. since i generally read nonfiction much more slowly than i do fiction (or memoirs), im more inclined to own a copy myself so that i can enjoy them over time at my pace. i get most of my books from thrift stores and the library (i have 6 library cards lmao), so its rare that i buy a fiction book new unless i absolutely loved it and want it for my personal collection!

So i looked it up and since these are the ikea billy shelves - I think you should get one quarter size (of the big ones) for next to the door and maybe you can squeeze a narrow tall half size inbetween the wall and the shelf on the right?

Australian book recommendations you kinda asked for but didn't really ask for: Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta, Cloudstreet by Tim Winton, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (I'm you've already read this but it must be said), and Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey (as someone who grew up in country Western Australia this book encapsulates life in those outback WA towns perfectly).

Pre-ordering is awesome!! I personally pre-order a lot of books bc then I forget about them and suddenly I have a new book in the mail! Last I pre-ordered was More Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa, bc it hasn't come out in Norway at least

Oh yes, total bookaholic here. Physical books always. Don't preorder enough. Online and bookstore shopping but nothing like a morning browsing a bookstore. Also love local library used book stores.

I think you would really like First Light Books in Austin, Texas, if you are ever around here. We are about to celebrate our one year anniversary. Its a small independant bookshop and cafe with a book curation comparable to Daunts. Its very community minded, and event focussed, we have already hosted some pretty big authors giving talks. Would be so awesome to see you there one day. I am London born but live and work here now.

Okay Jack you are looking so flawless in this video!! The last book I preordered was the new Ashley Poston book. Also I think a cool video would be to roast/rate people’s bookshelves specifically if they have curated them!! I would love you to roast my little library 😂😊

When I was younger, I used to put books behind and on top of the books already on my bookshelf. My mom would take the excess off and put them in a box beside my bookshelf. And then I would just proceed to put new books behind and on top.

I only buy thrifted or second hand books. Sometimes they are brand new, sometimes they are faded with lots of notes in them. I don't mind either. My Great Gatsby looks like its been through several geerations of readers, one tallied all the times colors were mentioned. Its fascinating.

Last book i preordered I think was ruthless ends by Katie Wismer. It’s a romantasy, last book in the series. You wouldn’t be into it but support indie authors!!!

Jack if you want to read some Australian literature, I could not recommend Limberlost by Robbie Arnott more highly. It’s so beautifully written, it almost reads like prose it’s so lyrical.
