Hello...I was lucky enough to buy a book inscribed by Michael G R Tolkien, Oxford, 22nd Nov 1967 entitled The Darkness; Evan Jones, Heinemann Ltd. I contacted Mr Tolkien and was delighted to receive a reply.
Thank you for sharing these wonderful books. I still have several of my childhood books, many were from the late 19th century. They too 'were read to death'. So special to see multi-generation gifts of books, even more so from Tolkien's family
Wow! What an amazing collection. Here are many of the elements of the Lord of the Rings. Oliphaunts, Odin Gandalf and many other adventurous and setting inspirations. What an amazing find. Tom Ayling's world of books is fast becoming an epic adventure worthy of legend. Thank you for giving us such an amazing insight into the world of book collecting (especially Tolkien's work) This is a wonderful channel.👏🙏😃👍
I have a copy of Grimm’s Complete Fairytales. It’s nothing special, printed in 1993 by Barns & Noble, leather bound, gilded cover, and not great condition and smells faintly of smoke due to the fact that it survived a fire. It’s wasn’t terribly damaged and it’s still intact and readable. It’s cool to me, a gift from my sister in its current condition, and that gives it sentimental value in my small collection. I love the worn and slightly singed cover.
You can rent out the Kipling home in Vermont, and much of it (a lot of it) is original. Much of the library is there, and it is where he wrote almost every day. The desk is there. It is owned by the National Trust, and I've rented it a few times. You STAY there, and the bathrooms are the same, you see the nursery and you can sleep 8-10. It's cheaper than renting a hotel room, everyone chips in a bit and we cook in the kitchen and eat at Kiplings own dining room table and chairs.
I am 70 and I had That Mowgli stories book when I was a child. I used to have all kinds of old books as people used to give me their old books as a child because I loved reading so much. I had a very very old edition of Grims Fairy tales, I never liked it, the pictures were so scary! Whatever happens to these things over the course of your lifetime.? 🤔
My sister has very old book 13th century. Its an interpretation of the bible. Cant remember exactly but the was owned by a lord in the UK at some point.
Yes Fountain pen. Penmanship was taught at School even when I was at School in the early 70's. First pencil and then Fountain Pen. And lots of spelling to memorise and dictation to copy.
(:)/(:(🟡):):(What a genuinely exquisite collection of antiquarian treasures! It must be difficult to let go of such coveted books when you recieve them in the mail to put up in your wonderful shop.

Fascinating! You bring the actual books to life as well as their content. Well done, sir.🎉
Bought the French Revolution and the story of the treasure seekers. Love the Tolkien family
"Please NEVER use Sellotape to repair your books. It will leave awful stains." Too true! And what a wonderful haul of vintage books
Love the video. None of the books are all that extraordinary in and of themselves, but they give some wonderful insights into the Tolkien family.
I like your Babar polo it looks good, also liked the video

I watch these videos so I can look at my library and say to myself, I can do better, Toms background of stock is my idea of a dream collection
I'm just listening to an audibook of J.R.R Tolkien's letters, some of these relate directly to his letters so this is very fascinating. Thank you!
Hey that’s Babar the Elephant 🥰 I used to watch that as child
And...and, you KNOW JRR hiself held several of Michael's 1920s books to read to him!!!!! Touched by Tolkien. Grt-Grt-grand idjits.

What a beautiful handwriting! Would love to know how to do it so well! What do you think he use to write it? Normal fountain pen?
Great video!

What an extraordinary interesting video.
I'm so looking forward to the next Simply Red tour...
Will you be playing New York ?
I've been a fact finding mission for my own curiosity to know who is next in line to hold the stewardship of the Tolkein estate.
I Was Surprised that there were none of his Fathers books in the box.
So if you shouldn't use cellotape to reinsert a page into a book - what so you use?
😊
🙂👌🏻
You should place the camera above your head, vertically positioned so we can see the book clearly instead of your face … 😊
