I can't tell you how pleasurable it is to listen to you ramble and chat about your passion for books. Its like looking forward to having a cup of tea and conversation with a very cool gentleman
How I wish we could do that very thing. Tea with Tom. Tom could simply pull books and ramble. A delightful hour or so, I should think! I would so love to be a part of something like that! 😊
Thanks Tom for making the time to share your passion for books with us, with your typical erudition. This episode is even more precious to us as we can appreciate how busy yet exhausted you are. I feel pretty chuffed that you make these efforts for us. You're a legend in my books! ;) Hope you get some good rest (& books!) on your holiday. Stay well good sir :)
18 minutes, 180 minutes... I could listen to you talk books all day. Your passion for the books is matched only by your compassion for the authors and owners. FWIW I think you''re right about Maurice, we talked about this back when I first read it in the 80s and the freedom of writing for a happier year, maybe one that would never come, but he had to believe it might, must have been so liberating. He was writing for publication, not just his own pleasure, but knowing he'd never face any backlash just as he'd never need to hope for any praise. The book has an ethereal, sparkling quality because of it, as if the whole story is viewed through thin silk curtains waving gently in the hazy heat of a long afternoon. A truly masterful piece, and a beautiful interpretation by Merchant Ivory. Have a fabulous and well-earned break!
I love listening to you talking about books! It's the perfect late sunday (or sometimes early monday) treat alongside with some good coffee. Like a weekly rendevous with my favorite antique book dealer!
No need to apologize I thought it was wonderful! I love seeing old books And thanking you for just a minute That they could be part of my library. Thankyou for sharing your world with us.
I always look forward to watching your videos in any format. You show us literature history and books that have passed through many hands during the years. It’s great how you can see all that in the old books. Thank you Tom and no need to rush, we enjoy the content!
I expect your channel and business, as well, will continue to grow beyond your expectations. People yearn for the sincere and the organic. Well done again.
There's nothing like, let's face it, BOOK PORN!!! Absolutely beautiful books to read and look at and hold, and what a lot you've got. That Wordsworth is something I couldn't part with. And a part of the pleasures of growing old is looking, again, at what is on ones bookshelf: on mine, for instance, is that exact copy of "Maurice", which I purchased new in 1971 and which I treasure very much. Keep up the wonderful work.
I have always said Maurice the same way as you. Morris is different. I read it for the first time this year, which lead me to James Baldwins Giovannis Room, and loved them both! I thought the last book was The Little Prince with the stars and the roses! I was almost disappointed when it wasn’t. Almost. 😊
Aborting a Thames walk yesterday at Wolvercote due to the torrential rain, it was only subsequently that I discovered Tolkien was buried in the village. Had I known beforehand I would have been in less of a hurry to get back into Oxford for shelter and lunch!
Lovely Video! Felt like it was just a few friends sitting together in the Library whilst you showed us some of your latest acquisitions No need for apologies - you are among friends here!!
You did a great job. It was extremely interesting to watch a different types of books and to learn about the leather covers. Well done do more like this show and tell about what you have in your collections and what you’re about to sell.
I am always enchanted not only by beautifully aged books but also by the ephemera within. I find those unexpected gifts add to the enchanting nature of the object. They make it more of a time capsule.
I'm a recent subscriber so maybe I haven't felt the wait as much, but I just wanted to drop by and say that I absolutely adored this more casual type video! I don't know much about old books, so hearing someone so knowledgeable showoff and talk about these absolutely gorgeous and super interesting pieces is a total joy :) I'd even go as far as to say that your voice shines through better without the usual music that you use in the background, it is very relaxing to listen to ❤ you make me wish I had the money to buy some of these off you 😁these old books are so great in design compared to what we get nowadays...They look small and easy to carry around, without sacrificing aesthetics and quality, whereas books these days are either kinda ugly or if they're pretty they're some fancy special edition that is also huge and impractical to read...Only the pocket collector's edition of lord of the rings and the game of thrones by the same company seem to come close to these! It's preferable to get things like this than knowing that you're stressing to put out content..
Your "rambling" videos are better than most of what is on RUclips, IMHO! I learn a lot from them. BTW, I've never heard anyone in the US use "Morris" rather than "Maurice" (Maurice Chevalier was a favorite of my grandparents). I'm very much a fan of everything you do on Tolkien.
Very enjoyable. I'd be happy with more of these videos. I'm not looking for polish--I'm looking for insights into some wonderful books by a passionate book lover.
I am an aspiring writer myself and your video about beautiful books makes me want to custom made my own books... I know that I would not be successful but I would have a beautiful legacy to my descendants
I remember when Maurice came out I was so pleased I had to read so much Forster at school - the curriculum was freer in those days and I don't think my English teacher accidentally made us open to his work.
I love this channel and it's because I learn so much. I am an aspiring book binder so I am just soaking it all up. The book that I will bind will be illustrated and added text by me as well. ❤x100
So glad I found your channel. I was wondering though, how would I go about finding a copy of a book I've been looking for for years that's no longer in publication? It wasn't necessarily popular or old but I can't find it.
Could you please go out on a limb and do a video about what current books you see as being collector’s items in the future. May I make a suggestion for one in the far future. Harry Potter, MinaLima editions.
I seriously would you to have live streams where yuo would just qietly work, you didn't have to say anything. It would be nice to have in the background.
I can't tell you how pleasurable it is to listen to you ramble and chat about your passion for books. Its like looking forward to having a cup of tea and conversation with a very cool gentleman
My thought as well...a cozy chat!

@@southernlady5085 Tea and Tolkien with Tom at the Randolph - now that would be a thing!
i couldn't agree more
This is a lovely video. It has a more personal feel. More like a conversation than a presentation which I like a lot. Thank you for your effort 🌿
Ditto
Always a wonderful video from you that is greatly appreciated.
Love those beautiful book bindings too.👍☺️💕
I did miss the videos but never feel a need to apologize . Thoroughly enjoyed this more casual presentation. Thank you.
This was delightful! Please more like this video. You are such a terrific storyteller. Thank you!

Wonderful information, presented in your own inimitable fashion. A real treat, thank you!
No need to apologize I thought it was wonderful! I love seeing old books And thanking you for just a minute That they could be part of my library. Thankyou for sharing your world with us.
What beautiful books! Thank you for sharing them. I did gasp when you revealed the final one, it's just stunning! What a work of art.

It's wonderful and the perfect morning tea companion.

That Wordsworth really is beautiful. The silk...
Another great video, Tom. Thank you for the fascinating summary of Forster's life and work.
Always enjoy your videos. Thank you.
I love listening to you talk about books and the history of books.
Aborting a Thames walk yesterday at Wolvercote due to the torrential rain, it was only subsequently that I discovered Tolkien was buried in the village. Had I known beforehand I would have been in less of a hurry to get back into Oxford for shelter and lunch!
I love a good book ramble. All the background on EM Forster was fascinating!
The 'Cider With Rosie' signed first edition is a lovely book to have.
Lovely Video!

No need to apologize. I very much enjoyed this looser format. Your off the cuff comments were quite informative and engaging.

Always love the content - post whenever you get chance - we know you also have a business to run.
You can't beat a good ramble...
Thank you so much for what you think might not be up to your high standards but it was just perfect and do not think otherwise.
I remember when Maurice came out I was so pleased I had to read so much Forster at school - the curriculum was freer in those days and I don't think my English teacher accidentally made us open to his work.
Tom, it was a wonderful video and a joy to listen too. Thank you for your efforts to enlighten and entertain. Enjoy your holiday.

I literally gasped when you opened the Wordsworth poetry book. So beautiful.
Your channel makes me miss Oxford every time I watch.

Jeff
You look SO tired...do enjoy your 'Holiday' and return to us Refreshed and Invigorated...dgp/uk
I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Nothing rushed and rambling about this video. It was like a one on one conversation. (I’m obviously a good listener,😂)
That's the French Imperial Eagle to the spines of those Napoleonic Bindings.
Have no interest in old books but I always find your videos fascinatingly interesting!
I appreciate your more focused videos with more information, but I also enjoyed this straight-up book porn a lot, too.
There's room for both.
I have never seen a copy of Beren and Luthien signed by Christopher Tolkien
📚 ❤

How do you insure your collection? I lost mine in a fire. 😭
I read THE LONGEST JOURNEY just two weeks ago. Now go get some sleep 😀
Isn't the crowned eagle the symbol of the russian tsar?
