After starting the prep work on Aitch last year, then having to stop as my mum became ill. My boat has looked in a sorry state on the cut ever since. Now I've finally got the paint and some half decent weather. Its time try my best to tidy up Aitch to the best of my ability.
In this episode I prep and paint one of the many panels. Hope you enjoy it!

I say old bean, I believe you have done quite a stellar job so far! The panel looks quite chipper and that new shade of blue comes across as being quite a bit more bright and cheerful as well as more modern in appearance. May I make a bit of suggestion to you ? I would like to see you wear some form of dust mask to help protect your precious lungs from that nasty dust. I'm sure there are things in there that you would not really want to ingest. Also, maybe you could wear some sort of cap to protect your dome when the sun is out Will be nice to see the girl when you have all the labor finished. Best to you Sir ! Kenny C Oregon USA

Either the camera is being kind or you have done a damn good job with the prep! I think leaving it as roller finish is the way to go, it'll be nice and consistent. A big job, doing the whole boat - a panel at a time will get you there. Great colour too.

    • @NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle
      @NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle  4 месяца назад +2

I'll be able to get away with just the roller for the red oxide & undercoats. I tried it with the gloss & it left a lot of air bubbles so I had to sand them all out & go again. A panel at a time is not so soul destroying I reckon. I think the colour will look nice when I paint the window frames, stripes & signage in a cream colour. All the best in whatever you're doing now Vin!

    Hi Vince
If I recall, the reason the filler goes ‘Off’ too quickly is because you have added to much hardener.
Sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.
The grades of pads should be :
    80 for the rough work
    120 for prime
320 for rubbing down primer before top coat

Great job Vince, 60s you say? Funky music says 20s! Whenever you rub back to bare metal it would always be worth re-applying the rust cure it’ll do no harm to the paint or filler but give the best protection against the dreaded rust. It’s you we are watching for so cruising, painting, mundane tasks, dogs it’s all good by me! Best Andy..

Oh well done Vince. Although it’s one panel, it’s pretty much a quarter of the work done already. Although the roof will be fun for your knees. Get some decent pads. You can almost see the old name of the boat from the treated rust marks. It’s also really obvious, on speed up, how much the boat moves when other boats go past. I’ll look forward to seeing the rest done. Take care Vince. Xxx

Sound job Vince. It’s amazing the difference a lick of paint can make, but a real pain in the bum for all the preparation that goes in to it. I reckon Aitch is going to look just the business, once it is all done. I feel your pain too, however. I spent a couple of weekends sanding under the entire waterline of my boat and then anti-fouling it. It was in my garden with the boat only on stands, so I had to do most of it while lying on my back. I am over 60 now as well, so the hardest part was getting up and down, and swearing at my knees ! On the plus side the boat is only 7m long, so not narrow boat length. Anyway it’s back in the water now and I am ready for cruising the Czech rivers again. Thanks to you for keeping my boating fix going over the winter. As always, great vlog Vince, keep them coming.

Hi Vince glad I never owned a steel boat, but I can tell wooden ones are even worse. Used to paint the hull of mine every year, the last three years were the best kept the boat in a climate controlled shed in Holland. So a quick rub down of the hull that had been jet washed before storage, a case of beer in the fridge and a mate on the roller, I'd follow behind with a large fine hair brush keeping the brush strokes in an upwards direction so the shine when dry was great. I always decanted any left over paint into smaller cans for touching up any dings through the summer.
A little trick if your going to paint down near the water line is to weight the otherside of the boat to get a lean on and raise the work side enough to keep it dry, when other boats pass etc.
Your doing great and the works inspector didn't bark at you once, are you going to have a go at sign writting???? Take care mate and keep busy.

I hated the prep work for anything be it boat, car or even at home, but as my old dad would say remember the 6P's, Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance.
