Rowdy 400+whp BIG TURBO Mazdaspeed 3 - POV Pulls & Acceleration @ 26 PSI

  • Опубликовано: 2 ноя 2021
  • In this video we take the Mazdaspeed 3 out for some POV runs down in Mexico with the BNR S5 turbo running about 26 psi of peak boost, and 12 degrees of ignition advance at 6000 rpm. The rev limit is currently set to 7000 rpm but I do intend on eventually raising it higher. At this stage of tuning, in order to keep knock under control, I'm mixing in 2 gallons of pure methanol with 94 octane pump gas in the main tank and adjusting for it in the tune. As always 1st and 2nd gear are a limiting factor in this car due to being front wheel drive, having short gen 1 gearing, and me being a complete amateur driver. That being said, 3rd gear and up are just asking for more power. This car isn't perfect, but it gets the adrenaline pumping more often than not. Enjoy the video! Please like, share, and subscribe :)

    Question: You've mentioned a time or two that a gen 2 transmission has better gearing in 1st and 2nd. Is a transmission swap a straight forward bolt on process?

    • @WannabeTuners
      @WannabeTuners  2 года назад +2

      For my goals it may be better, but short gears can also be beneficial in things like auto cross. But in terms of maintaining traction from lower speeds, having the longer gearing will make it easier to put the power down. But yeah the gen 1 and gen 2 transmissions are interchangeable and bolt right up!

    • @WannabeTuners
      @WannabeTuners  Год назад +2

      300 whp/300 lbft with a good tune and a good amount of octane is super safe. But that doesn't stop people from pushing these engines in stock form to 400+ whp. They can be very reliable at 400 whp as long as there is a lot of octane to keep detonation under control, and it is running a good safe tune :)

    I’m looking at getting a used one, really nice only problem is there’s a code for the shutter valve. It’s intermittent though, and sometimes comes on. Since it’s intermittent could it just need a new solenoid or check for electrical wiring?

    • @WannabeTuners

      It could be the solenoid for the intake runner flaps. You can check the wiring to the solenoid and connector, and check for free movement of the flaps by pressing in the lever. If I'm not mistaken it's located to the drivers side of the intake manifold.

      Damond trilogy all the way. Once you get the center mount on wheel hop is gone. OEM is going to take a big old 💩💩💩💩 all over your motor. hey man why short shift? youve got valve train right? it also seems like youre falling completely out of boost on every shift and that turbo doesnt seem to come on line "quickly". Car sounds great and is definitely making power but you should rev it out proper like. Stay in that power as long as you can then next gear hopefully your high enough in the rpms to get that turbo to light reasonably well.
    you ever consider a slightly smaller turbo and make like 3psi more? make same power but from 4-7500 vs now it seems like power is 5k-to when you shift at 6500.

    • @WannabeTuners
      @WannabeTuners  2 года назад +3

      I currently have the rev limiter on the WOT box set to 7k rpm. I'll probably bring it up to a max of 7500 rpm at some point because I only have Supertech 55lb valve springs. Other than that the head is stock. As for the lagginess of this turbo, there's no shortage of it. Especially because I have a hard time keeping my foot out of it in the first two gears, the tires will break loose and spin, causing the engine to bog in the next gear. I'm also learning about ways of getting bigger turbos to spool faster by retarding the ignition timing during the mid load regions of the timing map. I may try this and see if it helps with transient response from the turbo.

    • @BuildinProgress
      @BuildinProgress 2 года назад +1

      @@WannabeTuners pulling timing to aid with spool is a very old trick. Be careful because I’m sure you know but not enough ignition…your exhaust valves will be feeling the pain. You did the super tech valve train now I remember. I’m sorry about that. It’s hella expensive and the crower ”cheap” kit provides much more spring seat pressure. Too bad. I’d maybe keep limiter around 7200 and just work on getting the turbo to light. Transient response is something you do not have any of right now. It will blow your mind once you do. Nothing better then a 3-4 shift and watching the AP go from 26psi, shift, throttle, 26psi again like nothing happened. That’s where the fun comes in.
      In terms of managing traction this can be done within the tune. Pulse the ebcs with the tps so you have boost by throttle. Can make anywhere from 10-22psi just depending on how much throttle I give. All within one gear. Your setup will never do that. Seems like it just hits you hard or does absolutely nothing.

    • @WannabeTuners
      @WannabeTuners  2 года назад +1

      @@BuildinProgress Oh yeah I won't be pulling too much timing. I'll start with 0 degrees between 1.25 to 1.8 load or so, depending on the load curve during a pull, and then just smooth and interpolate values out. Hopefully it yields fruitful results. In regards to rev limits one of the guys who has the same head work as me was tuned by Justin at Freektune and he's revving out to 7800 rpm, so I should be ok at 7500 rpm. I know Nishan revs stock heads out to 7300 rpm, he's mentioned it in several of his videos. I probably won't go more than 7500 rpm though because with the Gen 1 ECU, we can't really tune past that as the look up tables pretty much max out at that point, so if I do rev higher it'll target the same values that it did at 7500. That's good though how there's a less expensive option with more seat pressure. The only real reason for me to rev it out more is to have a higher top speed in each gear and to have the next gear land at an RPM where the turbo can spool faster. That's assuming I don't break traction and bog lol.
      What I've always done with limiting boost in 1st and 2nd gear is reduce APP translation tables in correlation to load targets for those specific gears. I find it works pretty good, but the main thing for me is getting it to spool faster and more responsively. I could use the WOT box to flat foot shift, but before I start doing that I want to refine the the tune as much as I can first. It's definitely interesting with this larger 0.82 AR turbine housing. The S4 was much more responsive lol. BTW do u have instagram?

    • @WannabeTuners
      @WannabeTuners  7 месяцев назад

      Reducing power output in the first two gears definitely helps ;) I've learned a decent amount since posting this video. I'm currently revving to 7500 rpm and reducing load targets in the first two gears to maintain traction. And running pump gas 94 octane only has been surprisingly fun 😁 It goes to show that an efficient setup that breathes well can make good power on pump gas alone.

  • @zakura70jr
    @zakura70jr 2 года назад

    Couldnt you make the target boost lower like lets say 18psi for 1st and 2nd then add boost to 3rd and above individually in the cobb accestuner... i know theres a tuning table for that

    • @WannabeTuners
      @WannabeTuners  2 года назад +1

      I've tried lowering values in the boost compensation tables for 1st and 2nd gear several times, but they don't seem to work at all, and also seem to affect other gears, so I've stopped using those tables all together and just leave them OTS. The best thing I've found for me is to modulate throttle in 1st and 2nd, while targeting less timing in the lower load regions achieved in 1st in 2nd in the higher rpm areas. This allows power to be much more controlled in 1st and 2nd, until I reach 3rd and plant my foot to the floor which achieves higher calculated loads where much more timing is targeted. In this video however I wasn't using this approach, as timing was just being tapered up from high to low loads.

      The wheels are 18 inches in diameter and 8.5 inches wide. I can't remember the offset, but if your interested I can maybe find out this weekend. Tires are 235/45 R18. There is a very slight rub on the front wheel well splash shields when turning at full lock, since the 235/45 is a taller tire overall, but it's no big deal.

      @@joeestrada6946 I would make sure the oil level is good. Take the spark plugs out. Hook a booster pack up to the battery so it doesn't die. Plant the accelerator pedal to the floor while cranking the engine over to allow oil to circulate through the engine. Planting the accelerator pedal down while cranking disables the fuel injectors so it won't actually start. Once you've primed the engine with oil, you can re-install spark plugs and coils and fire it up!

    Why do you run that dogshit slow-spooling turbo and then shift so early? Especially if you have valvetrain work on a built motor? Way to make 500hp for 200rpm, that'll win ya lots of races. This build makes no sense at all.

  • @JackBurton871
    @JackBurton871 2 года назад +2

    Too bad you bought such a sleepy garbage turbo :-( Presses Gas *10 days later* here is some power. I also find it crazy that you went through those oil pressure issues and spent all that time on it just to buy another garbage BNR product. Clean car but seems like a pretty useless powerband. You can def push that turbo further and you will need to in order to get a more useful powerband. I would also be revving it out to 7500. I am not sure what your goal is for this. There is a lot of great info on the forums and it seems like you just YOLO'd this build. Who is tuning you? You should be able to push much higher timing and boost with the added meth. If you don't want to make more power you def bought the wrong turbo for the job.

    • @WannabeTuners
      @WannabeTuners  2 года назад

      I am tuning it myself. I do plan on setting the rev limit higher as tuning continues. I do agree that the BNR S5 is a bit laggy, but hopefully with tuning I'll be able to make it more responsive. The goal with the car has always been to have a fun street car. Nothing more, nothing less. If I win races, great. If I lose, then that's fine too lol. In terms of why I went with BNR again, it was because Bryan at BNR had recommended I give the Turbosmart OPR a try, which resolved the smoking issues I was having. He also gave me a discount on the S5 since I had the S4 previously. At the end of the day, we have to work with what we got lol
