Motorhome Warranty Work On Our Swift Kon-Tiki Sport 574 | VED Changes | Updates

- Опубликовано: 13 сен 2024
- I discuss the Swift warranty work required on our Swift Kon-Tiki Sport and the welcome changes to VED from the UK government budget.
The VED Changes:
"VED: Motorhomes - From 12 March 2020, the government will reduce annual VED liabilities for most new motorhomes to a flat rate of £265, which will rise to £270 for 2020-21, as motorhome manufacturers and dealers will not be required to provide a CO2 emissions figure when registering new motorhomes with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. From 1 April 2021, the government will align the VED treatment of new motorhomes and vans. (18)"

Glad you liked it
Sounds like you have a good dealership there Bob. Nice to hear positive outcomes. Thanks for sharing 😁 Trev
Interested to hear the problem you had with the rear camera. I purchased a new Bessacar 574 in January 2019 (same van as yours) from a Dealer in Somerset. I live in Edinburgh and asked the Swift Dealers in Scotland if they would do the warranty work as the rear camera was like yours all cloudy and misty. All the Dealers in Scotland refused to do warranty work as I had not purchased it from them. They said that they were too busy with their own clients warranties, and also that Swift only paid half of the hourly rate for warranty work. I contacted Swift and had no joy with them either. They informed me that Swift couldn't insist on a Dealer doing warranty unless the vehicle had been sold by them. I therefore had to drive 388 miles (7 hours) to the very obliging Dealer I bought it from, and of course 388 miles back home.
I love the van and this is the only problem I have had with it however I am not impressed with the awful attitude I have received for any warranty work from Swift and I was never informed of the reluctance I have had from the Dealers here in Scotland if you buy elsewhere. The Warranty work should be "Nationwide" - similar to purchasing a car. I wonder how many other Swift buyers have had similar experience?
Yes, this is poor! It’s new buyers that get caught out with this a lot. Dealers should make it clear that warranty work would need to be done by the supplying dealer. I had one dealer tell me I could get warranty work done at any dealer, but a quick check on the forums and swift website makes it clear that Swift dealers will mainly only do work on vans they have sold.
I had a similar problem with a Bailey we bought in Hertfordshire and then moved to Merseyside and struggled to find a dealer willing to take on warranty work, yes because of the rate dealers get paid.
Bob Earnshaw this is a genuine issue for people who move after a purchase. I am planning to keep my van for 5-10 years... so not unreasonable that somebody would move in this time period. I think swift are missing a trick here... as the largest manufacturer the size of the dealer network should be an asset not a hindrance.
I probably should add that when we were unhappy with one of their Swift dealers I rang Swift and they recommended Todds and we've been with them since.
Norman Schulberg
I have very similar problems with my swift Kontikki local dealer doesn’t want to know about warranty works
Very interested in servicing and habitation checks though 🤔
Thanks for the video Bob; you have just reminded me to advise our dealer on a couple of snags on our Swift caravan which we purchased about the same time as you changed your van.
Yes, you must tell them.
Hi Bob thanks very much for the reply and info . I will gift it a try . Best wishes to you both John an sue .
Another good video Bob. I have had the same issue with those flow restrictor ends on our swift caravan taps. These look identical to yours. Next time one pops out when running the tap, before you put it back have a look with a mirror in the tap itself you will see that these restrictors are lined up with a little lug inside. I found this out by putting it back and then watching it fly out again as soon as the tap was run! After 4 goes at it I investigated it and found out that they fit in a certain way!
Thanks, yes I figured that out after several attempts.
I can’t believe how calm you are regarding the “as you say - minor things” that are wrong. Having spent in excess of £50k there should not be anything wrong. The problems you found are typical of the motorhome industry. I have written many times about my concerns regarding the poor manufacturing and construction of Motorhomes. The manufacturers get away with murder. Vehicle manufacturers cleaned up their act many years ago. It’s about time the motorhome industry were forced to do the same.
They are complicated things, motorhomes, a moving house as it were, and some things are bound to go wrong. I know I had problems when I bought our new house. I accept things things go wrong, it is not a perfect world, unfortunately.
Bob Earnshaw Hi Bob, so forgetting to put the insulating cover on the wheel arch, and not using suitable screws to secure a cupboard door is not as you put it “complicated”, it is just basic QA. The industry needs to improve its Quality Assurance. I could go on, but I’ll leave it there.
Hi Bob, glad you got your van problems sorted out, they seem a good dealership to be with. Enjoyed the video, look forward to your next one x
When we finally get far enough up the ladder to buy a new motorhome under warranty I will make sure it’s a local dealer . Your day getting the problems sorted ran very smoothly and to be fair I think you and Jenny could deal with a long journey to a dealer but I think having them local is a big bonus .Quite a small snagging list really Bob . A few niggles but overall very good 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you, yes it is good to have a decent local dealer.
Hi Bob we are picking up our new kon tiki 596 on Tuesday, glad to see most issues you had were quite minor , I understand you are going to have some issues with any new Motorhome , nice video take care
Yes, but nothing major thankfully.
Hi bob glad your sorting your bits and bobs out on the warranty ,were did you get your sat nav holder from ? All the best Pete
Thanks, here is the link amzn.to/2vfxtA8
Thanks Bob, just ordered a friction mount and will try the dashcam lower down, all good info
Thank you.
Apparently I can't put the dashcam there as it's in a position that may obscure my view, So it has to go back to whence it came.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo that's funny Bob, I fitted the friction mount today and looked at moving my dashcam but decided against it as it may have blocked my view and I couldn't be bothered to re-cable it.
I have the same reverse/rearview camera in ours & never had an issue even after a prolonged cold storage. May I say as a retired automotive Process/Quality engineer customer feedback is important to manufacturers so as to generate corrective actions in the build & PDI quality check processes & update work instructions etc.
Yes, you think Sargent would be looking into this.
Bought a brand new Swift Bolero three years ago, had it eighteen months, then got shot. One problem after another.. Even had three new habitation doors fitted under warranty. Water system was useless, the tank froze even though there was a tank heater fitted ! Electrics kept tripping, had the control box back to the manufacturers three times. Best of luck, and I hope you get things fixed !
My last Motorhome was a Bolero and it was fine, you seem to have been unlucky there. I got the problems fixed as you might have seen at the end of the video.
Glad you had or repairs done.
Thank you Bob, i found this quite interesting. Regards from NZ.
Thank you, glad for found it interesting.
Hi Bob, liking your very imformative content keep up the good work.
Obviously we all hope nothing goes wrong with a new purchase however, if it does better under warranty and it’s always a lot easier if purchaser understands that sometimes things can go wrong or are missing and supplier is sympathetic and quick to fix the problem/s
I remember the snagging list on our new house, and that puts it into perspective. It's good to have a dealer you can trust.
Cheers Bob going to try that with our dash cam coz like yours we can't close the front blinds!!! 👍👍😊😊
Apparently I can't put the dashcam there as it's in a position that may obscure my view, So it has to go back to whence it came.
We have the very same issue with our camera too Bob! Let us know if you get yours sorted... we just figured it was a quirk of the camera (and in fairness, that rear view system isnt great anyway!) - we love your Kon Tiki btw, like a bigger, more beautiful, more fancy version of our little C205! 😁👍🏻
I'll have to see how I get on with the replacement. It was OKish on the way there this morning, but at its worst, I couldn't see anything through it.
No, at it's worst, I could see a circle of mist inside the glass.
Not to bad Bob.
👍👍👍👍👍 informative video thank for that.
That seems like quite a few Quality Assurance issues on a new van, but good to see the Dealer are going to sort some of it for you.
What is the clear plastic dome above the latch on the door to the under kitchen sink cupboard?
Just a sticker.
I had mine back to a local Fiat dealer yesterday for the break pipe recall which it turns out it didn’t need they did however replace a breather clip on the bulk head which was another recall which I wasn’t aware off.
Yes, there is this on the gov.uk website - www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-recall
Yep were taking our new van to a main dealer in York next week for the brake line check. I have checked it all and it looks absolutely fine.
Thanks Bob, very interesting. It does make one wonder about Swift’s quality control processes.
Good you got it all sorted out Bob.
We had the same issue with our tap on a swift caravan, probably standard in the swifts.we find it happens when on a serviced pitch and put the pump on.yep" as a plumber i should have known better" i was told by the mrs lol.
Hi Bob can you tell what you have used for your sat nav now to sit on your dashboard?
This is it
Garmin Automotive Portable Friction Mount
amzn.to/39RWa4Y
Sorry Bob. That should read £ 2135 VED inc 1st years VED
Hi Bob . I have got the same problem with my cupboard door hinge. How did you go about putting more screws in to hold it . Best wishes to you both . John
I drilled out the holes and used small plastic rawl plugs and wood screws.
Got the same issue with our camera. Had it replaced but still the same. Do you have a link for the sat bag base? Thanks.
Thanks, here is the link amzn.to/2vfxtA8
@@BobEarnshawMoHo Many thanks Bob.
What was the mount you mentioned you acquired for the Avtex Tourer 2 ? Thanks.

@@BobEarnshawMoHo Hi would that mount fit the Falcon Navi Explorer ? I know you used to have one as I have and don't like using fiats great big dash holder
No
Bob, do you travel with your TV insitu?
Yes, it's firmly bolted to the wall on it's TV bracket.
Isn’t that Dashcam, protruding more than 40mm into wiper zone, illegal there?
Yes, you are correct, it needs to be behind the rear view screen, where it was before, so I'll have to remove it everytime I shut the blinds. Thanks for pointing out the error of my ways! 😀👍
Glad you got your snagging list sorted out. I could noticing your spotty mat as you come in the door. Do you know what the make is and does it come in different sizes? It seems ideal for muddy paws! Many thanks for sharing your issues with us it lets others know that everything has little things wrong but they can easily be fixed without too much hassle, how long did it take from you reporting it to Todd's sorting it out?Cheers....Guy.
Thanks, our friend Aileen sells the pet mats www.mckaypetsupplies.co.uk/shop
I reported the snagging list mid January and the parts arrived at Todds a couple of weeks ago.
swdman1234 the mats are 45cmx100cm. They are great in Motorhomes, caravan or home. They brush and hoover well. They are non slip and machine washable. As Bob says, check out my website for other designs and goodies. Thanks
Some more info on that ved situation would be good , I don’t don’t anything about it , and will it effect my retirement plans ? Is it from vans first registered , or all vans ? Am very confused about it all ? Your help would be a fine thing , maybe a vid in the making 😉
It has reverted to how it was previously, £165 a year for Private Heavy Goods Vehicles and £265 for PLGV. I've put all I know in the video description, hopefully we'll know more soon.
Bob Earnshaw , Thanks Bob , it’s seemed a bit of a blow to me , am a lorry driver so am used to big bills but that was too much , hope they have seen sense ,,, the story continues ,,, 🤔
Sadly pretty typical of Swift build quality,I've had a 664,66plate from 'almost(750 MLS) new'and had countless issues with what is basically bad workmanship, there vans have decent quality equipment but are spoilt by quick and cheap building methods.I've fixed most issues myself, but surely spending the sort of money we do on these vehicles we deserve better
On your side panels outside the skirts I’ve noticed today I’ve got this white beading trim and no sealant is this normal
Not sure what you mean, but the beading is probably just covering over sealant.
Could you send me thr link for the sat nav holder as i can't see it in the the details thank you
Here you go Garmin Automotive Portable Friction Mount

Amazing how the lack of wheel arch cover was not picked up at PDI. A good dealer should have resolved this before delivery, it seems the industry uses the end customer as final inspection!
I only saw after we'd had the motorhome two weeks,it, Swift missed it, Todds missed it. It is black in a dark cupboard and I bet you would have missed it.
Bob Earnshaw maybe, but from my own experience it does seem dealers (and Swift) could be more diligent with PDI’s. Glad you got it sorted. I have a few issues with my van and hoping the dealer sorts it.
No quality control during build and non off the production line then.
I have no idea how you come to that sweeping statement. They missed one thing. Everything else happened after we bought it. That's what a warranty is for.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo
I would also add wrong cheap choices of parts.
@@davidsedlickas8222 OK, thanks for your comments.
Hey what have you done with Jenny !
Left her looking after Poppy!
I have just read that the ridiculous motorhome road tax has been reversed as from today.
That's right, as I mentioned in the video.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo Ooops! apologies.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo I have just watched it again and i cant believe i missed that, which i find embarrassing.
@@chazsach6594 I mentioned it once and thought I got away with it... 😊
CHAZ SACH It seems that the buyers who paid the higher RFL are not to get a refund and, worst yet, will still have to pay the increased rate for the 5 years! Further still their motorhomes will be less desirable s/h if they should wish to sell during those 5 years.
Faults should have been discovered during Swift’s PDI.
Yes they should have spotted the missing foam, but the light stopped working after we bought it as did the camera misting up. The tap worked as designed and the door was yanked by someone. Apart from that, yes.
Hi Bob/ Jenny. Seems like I need a bit of advice regarding VED. We bought a new Burstner 744, the rear lounge model that you reviewed at the NEC in Oct, for delivery in April. Burstner paid the £ 2153 plus the first years VED as part of the deal. How do we stand on this now ? any ideas ?
steve harding It’s tax, just one of those things, take it on the chin. If it had gone up would you be happy for them to come back to you for more! I don’t think so. You won’t get a refund.
Richard Cope Thanks for the info. I haven’t asked for a refund. I was just interested to know how we stood with VED. I have been told Burstner paid the first year 2135 fine thanks that was the deal ! Not my responsibility. But now how do I stand is the VED 500£ plus for the first 5 years or 265£ private light goods or 165£ phgv or still classed as a luxury car over 40 k and taxed accordingly. Maybe you know ?
DVLA will reband the vehicle and I believe it will be the £165 for private heavy goods.
I don't know, normally whatever band the the vehicle starts with is what they continue to pay, hopefully we will get more details from DVLC soon.
Richard Cope Thanks for the info, if that’s fact -Result.However, I am still confused as to where the 40k luxury VED comes in. All will be made clear, anything else is open to interpretation at the moment. Thank you for your comments and obvious interest
Dont go to york next week bob..stay home.please!...look at what pm is saying....peace.
