"there is still plenty of time to screw it up" Love that quote. Great one Drew.
Agreed on the overall view of grades here. An additional personal comment, as someone who hires people: I'm absolutely not interested in a person's grades, would find it even weird if a candidate showed me his or her grades. What matters is personality, enthusiasm, skill and quality of work (in that particular order).

I am a first semester student in architecture school right now and going through the stress of the grey area in regard to knowing where I stand in my studio grading wise. I guess I just need to let it go and do my best work I can and not stress about the grade. It’s tough. It’s so different than any other academic experience I’ve ever had before.

    Very nice video!
Just to share a personal experience Many years ago I had a teacher who called me stupid and embarrassed me in front of an entire classroom because I was learning different than the others. That teacher lost her job the next day. It physiologically affected me for years. I am now going on four years of successfully working in interior design and have a strong interest in architecture. Thank you for your videos.

+Heather RO I'm glad you enjoy the vids! And I'm even more glad you didn't let a bad teacher deter you!

I'd argue folios matter more than grades.

agreed. but if you can make a good portfolio might as well get good grades, cause you can and putting effort into those 5+ years of university will help you your entire career.

I agree. Communication with others is a huge part and being able to produce. Showing what you can put out with quality matters.

I like the idea of grades you presented, they are simply data of how you performed in a class rather than a measure of quality in your work. I find critiques are the real test of quality, show your everything to a fresh audience and defend your work against as much criticism as you can. Have you made an advise video about critiques?

+The Janitor it's been a while since I talked about that, but here is a playlist with my videos about presentations: ruclips.net/p/PLl9MZ920ViZAJ8kkH1hlIPOxZnGFcLxEd I hope this helps.

Having good people skills is undervalued in architecture, if you’re good in studio but a social quack, it will hurt you in the long run

    • @DrewPaulBell
      @DrewPaulBell  5 лет назад +2

You’re right. It’s probably undervalued in school, but I think out in the profession, people recognize the importance.

I have a question! I’m from Germany and want to know if the school of architecture the same is like an university?
Because I wanted to study architecture at Oxford university but I’ve heard that there is no option to study architecture at Oxford so I want now to study it at Oxford books university
But I’m still confused if the Oxford books university the same is as Oxford university!
    Thanks for this great video

I feel like producing good work and getting good grades are connected. If you do good work then you get good grades; if you do crappy work then you get crappy grades.

Hi, is architecture as stressful as they say? I am last year of high school with art as a subject and its already stresseful. Do you think I will be able to handle it? I dont want to be stressed out for the rest of my life if I choose arch.

+Thea I talk about that in this video here: ruclips.net/video/DaZ8EiBkVrc/видео.html thanks for the question!

I just finished my first semester and it's the most stressful thing I have ever done in my entire life, but also .. it's so unbelievably worth it if architecture's your passion. I don't think I'd ever regret studying architecture, because it really fullfills me. Sometimes, especially when a project doesn't get the grades I'd want it to, I feel like I can never do it right and nothing makes any sense, but the next day I'm just so glad I produced something that I am really really proud of.
