How to Play I'm Stranded by The Saints - Using the WRONG CHORDS (According to several experts)

  • I had the weirdest phone conversation with Ed Kuepper (Saints lead guitarist) a couple of years ago. It was just after he had played in Perth and was flying home over east. My mate works at the airport and spotted Ed sitting alone in the terminal and went over for a chat. Next thing you know he is telling Ed how he knows a guy that is a big fan and is building guitars etc... one thing leads to another and my mate rings me and says here talk to Ed... "Ed who" I say... next thing you know I have this weird conversation with a musical hero of mine. I ask him if he still has his red Gibson SG that I recall him playing all those years ago, and sure enough he does. I can't remember the rest of the conversation as it was somewhat surreal.
Anyway it was inevitable I would have a go at this classic song. The original punk record that started everything punk for me and I suppose a lot of other people. When you say punk most people think of the Ramones and the Sex Pistols as starting everything off, but for me it was the Saints. A great Aussie band of the 70's.
Edit: Read the comments section for a hint as to why this video is titled the way it is.... yes I am trolling the commenters... (original is a fraction sharp so I know it sounds off in standard tuning)

You never disappoint OGD (I've caught a few of your vids and they've all been pretty good). I've loved this song forever, was about 14 when it came out and it was love at first sight (or first hearing). Enjoyed the story in the text, and also agree with your sentiment: if it works, it's right. Chords look right to me, noting in a band situation, the bass player helps with that run down during the chorus. In terms of rock history, this song is seminal, we're talking mid to late 1976.

I think the way it was recorded was in standard tuning but slightly sharp. Maybe that happened when they recorded it from the reel and converted it onto vinyl..

Hy Oxblood Man I'm looking to see what tuning its in and saw your post, I played in stand tuning and nup was out. So I dopped 'D' nup wasn't that. So your explanation makes sense. I got a gig coming up and the bass played needs to learn it, But when he tries to play like the original clip, likes I did it will, it will sound wrong. Would sharpening the standard tuning by half a semitone do the trick? I mean we can play the song in any key or tuning but I wanna to play and lean with the video. cheers Dave

You should learn "Stranded in the Jungle" by the Cadets.....Now that is long before all of that and the roots of true punk.

Hmmm... that's a long long time ago... it was certainly "different" in its day. I think that song became pretty close to being (what I would call) "punk" when the New York Dolls covered it in 74'. Then again what is the definition of "punk"? I think its like all music in that it has a different definition according to the listener's tastes. I think I will pass on that song... thanks or the comment, it certainly made me go look it up and have a listen. A song I wasn't aware of until you pointed it out (though I do have the that NYD album and its on there). Cheers..

roflol, mate that song is the antithesis of antisocial. Even the saints back in their day were considered not anti-social enough for the poms but its all good thanks for the giggle :)
