Why is everything SO EXPENSIVE in India?
1. Narrow Direct Tax Base: 97% of India does not pay DIRECT taxes, which forces the government to rely on indirect taxes that significantly inflate expenses. And from here the Tax Fraud in India starts.
2. Reliance on Indirect Taxes: Due to the narrow direct tax base, the government heavily relies on indirect taxes, including GST, Road Tax, Fuel Cess, Entertainment Tax, Toll Tax, Krishi Kalyan Cess, Swachh Bharat Cess, Education Cess, and what not. These taxes are regressive and impact all consumers, regardless of income.
So, here you have a situation where 3% of India is evading taxes (because they are over-burdened with taxes), and 97% of India is burdened with indirect taxes-without even realizing it (without even holding the government accountable - there is a strong corelation between Democracy & direct tax base).
What’s worse?
High taxes don’t correlate with quality public services. Police treat you like third-class citizens, doctors don’t operate unless you are a VIP, and when you lose a job, you are again taxed as/when you receive a 'severance cheque.'
Unlike Nordic countries, where social safety nets provide support during unemployment, in India, individuals often find themselves without aid when they lose their job.
For a few votes, the government ruins the lives of 3% directly and 97% indirectly. The rich will buy golden passports, but the 97% will vote based on their caste, religion, and region.

After our first generation highly educated and dedicated leaders, the political vacuum created has been occupied by goons, uneducated and selfish people. Today’s Educated people want “security”. Today, Political entry needs money and sacrifice of all personal, family aspirations. With so much at stake, educated Indians are not willing to join active politics. The general public is more concerned about religious rituals, desperate to earn money by all means, the more illegal and unregulated the business norms the better. Society in general has eyes only for people with power ( politicians and IAS officers), money and doctors ( even with med degrees from China, Eastern Europe etc). Police force is understaffed, and most of the time, they are engaged in the “bandobast” of some politician visiting a city or village or some such place. Judges have so many facilities, but they are not willing to keep courts running for extra hours to close cases. They “recommend” appointment of more judges which adds to economic burden. Netas stage “vibrant Gujarat” type festivals at the cost of public money, the outcome of which is “under table commisions” to all officers arranging such gala events.

Just as an example there was a neighbour near my house ( many years back) who were leading may be a lower middle class life. Husband was a driver, wife house wife and a girl child. Husband fell ill, the illness dragged for few years and he died. All the money were drained out for the treatment they didn't have money even for burying the body ( neighbours helped). No family support as well.

Its the democratic secular western economical system that causes this unbalance. When we talk about Islamic system where 2.5% assets of a wealthy person are taken and given to the poor, you guys don’t like it. You start cursing Islam and ignoring this fact. The God who created this world has given the system already. You don’t take hefty taxes on every single sale or purchase. You just have zakat if they have certain amount of savings or Gold or equals. If they don’t have it, then they don’t pay anything.

Hire a better CA. If your dad falls into the 30% Tax Bracket, he earns really well. Akshay Kumar earned ₹468 crores and paid only ₹30 crores in tax. So, hire a better accountant who can tell you what to do in order to cut down your taxes.

Recently before elections one party came for promotion and when asked what benefits I get as a tax payer they said you will feel safe and secure 😮 and roads are there in your area … every direct tax payer should get - Min 10% discount in any hospital even private and in any school fee even private/ international/ corporate.

In the same oxfam report for 2022 read that top 10% only pays 3% of total gst. It is an indirect tax but it provides an insight into overall tax system.

Right. The data is seriously flawed. Our country can not survive on such low tax if this was true where 80% people don't pay tax and instead get benefits from govt at every level coz they are poor. Also, indirect tax has to paid by everyone on consumables which does not depend much on the paying capacity. Instead, indirect tax is a burden on people who pay hefty direct tax.
