- As cinephiles, debates amongst each other go with the territory! Whether it’s determining if Die Hard is a Christmas movie (which it is!) or who shot first (Han did), but one of the most important, widely-discussed topics that stand the test of time is - who is the greatest action hero of all time?! The Austrian Oak known as Arnold Schwarzenegger? Or the Italian Stallion aka Sylvester Stallone? If we had the chance to give Mount Rushmore an action movie facelift, there is no doubt that two of those faces would be solidified with the handsome mugs of Arnold and Sly.
Since the 70s, these men have been kicking ass and taking names with no signs of slowing down! Both action stars, even at their advanced age, are still making explosive, bone-crunching films that actors half their age wouldn’t dare do! Stallone has Expendables 4 due out next year as well as appearing in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3! Arnold is still keeping busy by playing “The President” in Kung Fury 2. I bet the Governator wishes he really got that chance! And Arnie is also returning to the world of spies once again in the upcoming Netflix Series Utap. But today, we are going to pit these two icons against each other to decide ONCE AND FOR ALL who is the greatest action star in cinematic history.
So, head to your nearest bomb shelter, grab your steaks and protein shakes, and get your favorite one-liners ready because once again it’s time to head to the cage of movie mania that is... FACE OFF!
This episode of Face Off is written by Jay Saint G, narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, and edited by Matthew Hacunda. But don’t take our word for it, who do you think is the greatest action hero of all time? Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone?

Arnold wins just for tricking Sly into Stop or My Mom Will Shoot
Both of these guys are such legends it’s crazy
That’s true. OG Action Movie icons.
No question, Arnold! The guy made legendary films! He made characters that no other actor could ever replace, that's why the remakes failed. Predator, Conan, Terminator, Total Recall. Even his lower tier films like Raw Deal, Commando or The Running Man were amazing. Schwarzenegger is synimynous with action films!
Stallone is way much better!
So is Stallone, plus he can act.
I actually think the running man is one of his best films great movie good time.
Yes question, Sylvester is the GOAT. Arnold is a close second, followed by JCVD, Jackie Chan, Jet Li.
Love arnie but Rocky man......
Both great both made flops… but Arnold is the definition & blueprint to a iconic sci fi/action hero of the 80s/90s.
I agree with you, Arnold would have been my pick!
Yup I agree still they're both action icons hence the face-off. I have a soft spot for Stallone courtesy of demolition man I friggin love that movie.
"Fuck your freedoms" - Arnold
Arnold terminated himself with that line to millions of fans.
Sly wins.
@@pinokio3785 FACTS!!!
Both are absolutely great legends but Arnold will always be the last action hero
I feel like Arnold’s most comedic moments are not even in his comedy films, his one liners are always hilarious
Commando. 🤣👍
Demolition Man and Last Action Hero are two of my all time favorite movies. It's seriously hard for me to choose which one of these guys is the best. They're both so cool. Judge Dread is another favorite of mine. And who can forget T2 and Jingle All the Way??? Man....the 90s were pretty great when it comes to movies and music.
It's close, but the right decision was made. Stallone is still making great stuff until today. Can't remember the last big thing Arnold was in. So even more bonus points for the longevity of the Italian Stallion.
I love ‘em both, but Arnie’s filmography has more favorites of mine. T2 alone towers over anything Sly has done, even Rocky and First Blood.
Arnie’s been in two of the best action movies of all time not named Die Hard (T2/Predator). Arnie wins.
T2 I agree but rambo is better than predator
@@lilpp4791 Don't get me wrong, First Blood is a great movie with a great message, excellent setting, well made action, as well as Sly's and Dennehy's brilliant acting. I personally think it's a sacred classic. I love it and I rewatch it pretty often, but Predator is the best sci-fi/action movie of the 80s and arguably Arnold's best performance. It's perfectly structured, more dynamic and rewatchable, suspenseful, fantastic villain and the way it transforms from action to horror and then from horror to sci-fi is awesome. Predator rules on every single level.
I love them both but I tend to watch Arnold’s movies more, that being said , I do love Stallone too and loved when they were together in Escape Plan
Agree 💯%.
When I was growing up I preferred Arnie, but now I’m older I prefer Stallone movies
I mean… “Last Action Hero” says it all…
I don't think I can pick a winner. But T2, Tue Lies and Total Recall are three of my favorite of all time. So ill give it to Arnie
LOL, this all convinced me that Arnie is the big winner!
Arnold wins the 80s hands down.
Wrong. Sly wins by a long shot. He did so much, much, much better at the box office.
@@llorenstorrespr4409 that's not the only metric my friend
@@FrankJohn it is.
Tough one honestly. Rambo? Rocky? Cobra? These are definitely classics. Predator, T1, and T2 was 90’s, but Arnold was also in some absolute bangers obviously. I don’t think it’s a landslide for either/or. They both rocked the era.
@@llorenstorrespr4409Nah, Sly loses the 80's.
I grew up on Stallone movies mainly because my mum was a big fan. Arnie's 80s stuff was generally a bit more R rated so I missed alot of them as a kid.
Stallone might have been the better actor but Arnie's pure charisma was undeniable
Sylvester Stallones films were generally R Rated as well including First Blood and sequels, Cliffhanger, Demolition Man, Lock Up, Judge Dredd, and Tango and Cash.
Ya it was great growing up in the 80’s & 90’s
Yeah you're probably right, i guess it was as much a case of my parents perception of the violence levels. I remember seeing tv trailers for movies like Red Heat and Total Recall as a kid but my mum was having none of it haha.
But then she had no problem with me watching Rambo 3 and Tango & Cash, etc. The only Arnie movie she even liked was Twins 😁
@@shanecordova6970 I agree I was born in 1986 and growing up with my parents and my older brother born in 1980 we would watch a lot of action movies from 80s early 90s. My brother and I were big fans of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson among others, I watched First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part 2, The Terminator 1 and 2, Lethal Weapon series, Die Hard, and Rocky movies movies among others quite a bit.
Schwarzenegger is my favorite action star.
Only Arnold 💪
This really is a close call. They both gave us all memorable films and incredible performances.
The Austrian Oak, easily, is the best Action Star!
Arnie by far. Quality of films were better.
Upcoming film Prey? You guys forget to upload this one couple of months ago?! Also for me it’s Arnie grew up on that guys films and mostly prefer his films than Stallones but says films are sometimes a little more thought out , sometimes
It's highly subjective in the end. I think the result being close, but with Stallone edging out Arnie is fair in its way, but I personally find Arnold the more memorable of the two. I'm just not as keen on Sylvester, I don't watch most of his movies (Rocky and Rambo namely). I've seen some of course, but when it comes to filmography as a whole, I have seen a lot more of Arnold and I find him more entertaining in terms of action, and more funny.
On top of some of the greatest action films of all time, Arnie has shown that he can do fantasy (Conan), Horror (End of Days), has a natural gift for comedy (Twins/Kindergarten Cop), and even children's movies (Jingle All the Way/Last Action Hero). His ability to work in many different genres and appeal to such a wide range of film fans makes him the best for me.
Face Off was John Travolta and Nickolas Cage... LMFFFAAAOOO
"Sylvester Stallone is the only self-made star in Hollywood." - Arnold Schwarzenegger
Cool concept. You need to do a face off of Nick Cage and John Travolta… ‘cause… “Face Off…”
While Sly is the better actor and a great writer, Schwarzy has the better movies (overall). Especially since we're specifically talking about action movies, Arny wins this one.
Arnold Schwarzenegger 💯
The ultimate Face Off. I've always been a Stallone Guy for many years.
I appreciate the time and effort you must have put in to compile this video. Great work and thank you for the great content!
And I'd have to go with Arnold...between Terminator and Total Recall he battled humans and aliens...from jungle to outer space, Arnold did it all. Hands down. Not too mention the legit issue of his thick accent, size and alien status. He's the man, across the board. I adore Stallone, but in this regard...truly Arnold is king.
Arnold is Coke... Sly is Pepsi 👍
It's always amazing how rivalries just come together in the right place and right time in history. It's because of this informal competition that great performances are made and a win win for the actors and audiences.
Rocky and Rambo are cultural icons. Sly wins, imo.
I can agree with the end result but Sly over Arnie in the 80s is an interesting one. Sly had to rely on Rocky and Rambo during that decade mainly while Arnie was doing different ones (unless you really want to count the Conan movies)
Believe or not Stallone's movies was making more money at the box office compare to Arnie's films. His first $100 million blockbuster was Twins where Stallone had a decade of $100 million blockbusters starting with Rocky. Heck Cobra beat Raw Deal at the box office
@@leejohnstone4663 that's interesting to hear
I think Stallone were the first ever actor to get 12 millions and that were insane in middle 80's. Got it for "Over the top" movie.
This is the reason why other actors started to demand the "Stallone" payday. In fact it were 45% of the whole movie's budget.
@@V3ntilator Stallone along with Eddie Murphy where the first actors to demand and get a percentage of the films profits
Sly is a talented screen writer too, He wrote Rocky, and I think he wrote the Rambo movies too. I could be wrong on that, I know it was adapted
We need one for Dolph Lundgren vs Jean-Claude Van Damme
Arnie Is Like Superman He is Unbeatable And Sly Is Like Batman You Can Beat Him but Can't stop him
I've always wondered why this has been a debate..Arnold has more hit films
Sly does more, but Arni is better at what he does.
True Legends. Thanks for the great content.
Stallone is a perfect mafia boss in the new TV Series that started today. "Tulsa King".
The Governator!!!
(2:56) Sylvester Stallone has never won an Oscar.
But he did star in Oscar.
The only Stallone movies I've watched are the Rocky movies, the Rambo movies, Demolition Man and Daylight, while there are few Arnold movies I haven't seen yet, most of them before he got famous due to Terminator, so Arnold wins easily
For me it has to be Arnie. I like Stallone but I got more in to his movies as I got older, I grew up on Schwarzenegger movies.
Man I just need an episode Steven Seagal vs Van damme.
Bruce willis vs Harrison ford.
Jackie Chan vs Jet li.
Jason Statham vs The rock
Nicolas Cage vs somebody
Arnold dominated the 20th century and I think of him as a lovable Austrian giant.
Woah, pump your brakes right there, Tango and Cash and Twins are freakin classics, and glorious.
Dude i forgot about those! Saw both of these more times than i can count as a kid
@@thestoicwhinger hells yeah!
I often go back and forth, but at the moment I'm going with Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnie is larger than life and Sly is the everyman with a heart and a dream. Love them both, but If I have to pick one, it's Sly. Arnie is an actor. Sly is a filmmaker, and that's a huge difference. You don't see directors like Tarantino talking about the way Arnie wrote scripts in the 70's influencing how they wrote dialogue. The mirror between Sly as a man and as an an artist and Rocky as a cinematic alter ego has never been matched in the history of cinema with the exception of Orson Welles and Falstaff. Sly kept up that conditioning in the 80's while writing and directing the films, and in the case of 'Rocky' which is one of the greatest films ever made, creating the character! Arnie has done amazing things away from the screen which Sly will never match, but cinematically, Sly is the man. I love 'Total Recall', 'Conan' and 'Terminator 1 and 2'. All amongst my favourite movies. 'Kindergarten Cop' and 'Twins' are both staples for me. But Rocky is like a member of my family (and Rambo as well to a lesser extent).
I can't decide between either of them. Though I feel like without Rambo, we probably wouldn't have Commando. As far as I can tell, Commando was inspired by Rambo, right?
"Up coming prequel, Prey"
You.... must have been really late getting this video out after that part was recorded.
I tend to think of Arnold as the bigger action star but I consider Sly to be the better actor (not to mention writer as well). They really don't make them like they used to.
I agree with the outcome of Stallone by far, but must disagree why. 80s go to Arnold, 90s personally go to Stallone, 2000s till today, Stallone by a mile. But also Stallones an amazing writer.
Over The Top is not a bad movie. N Prey is LITERALLY the 2nd Best Predator film ever.
Predator 2 is definitely the second best Predator. Prey was just okay, like every other sequel.
Both are great we grew up watching them but if I had to pick between the two it's Arnold schwarzenegger his movie's are just more entertaining we get the classic one liners the humor
It's Sly for me.
Also - I actually really liked "Tango & Cash".
Cobra and Tango & Cash were both excellent films. Honestly, I was never a fan of the Rocky series after the second film, and Rambo was always too cheesy for me to take it seriously. Sure some of Arnold's movies were pretty cheesy as well, like Commando and Red Heat, but the difference was that Rambo always took itself seriously, while Arnold's movies knew exactly what they were and didn't try and pretend to be anything more. I'd still give the 80's to Schwarzenegger.
Arnold by far
Both are legends but Stallone is my guy, always will be. Rocky alone is enough for me but also Rambo, two incredible characters.
Arnold Schwarzenegger for the win
I’ll always watch T2, Predator and Conan. Definitely can’t say the same for any Stallone flicks.
I honestly can not choose/pick aside. I loved and enjoyed both.
That said loved the video:)
Yay! SLY! MY hero! You did it! I love Arnie but Sly is the man!
Al Pacino Vs Robert De Niro
Terminator 2 AND Predator. Enough said - Arnold wins.
Origins is a tie??? One wanted to be a movie star his entire life... and another was born in a different country, had to learn a new language, and had AN ENTIRE CAREER prior to becoming a movie star... LMFFFAAAOOO
Escape Plan, but only first movie, Expendables 2, Aftermath and D-Tox, Eraser and Specialist. Both of actors are still on top. I would like to see Chuck Norris and Bruce Willis comparison.Thank you very much
Arnold for me
Arnold is too unique to replace.
Im 44 years old. The two of them defined what action heroes where, and in an era (the 1980s) when testosterone-fueled mega-tough guys saved the day. Choosing one over the other makes no sense. Despite many great contenders, they (at least for me) simply didn't have any competition in Hollywood. And today is a different time where Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson grace the screen. They are just not allowed to do the same thing as old R-rated movies. Perhaps this will change in my lifetime.
Arnold…definitely
I thought Face Off was Cage v Travolta
Stallone ruled the '80s. Rocky, Rambo & Cobra, even Rambo cartoons had prime-time ratings, toy line & rambo video games. Stallone made much better at the box office by far.
Arnold....no contest!!!
cmon it's not even close. running man, both terminators, predator, conan, commando....arnie is the king👑
Arnold is number 1 after Clint Eastwood
The best entry in the Terminator franchise after Terminator 2 is the 3D theme park attraction T2: Battle Across Time
Two legends, I would go with Arnold in his prime over Stallone in his prime just by an edge. T1 and Predator would go over my favorite Stallone movies.
Love em both, but it's Arnold.
Im going to go with they were both awesome.
Arni , not even close , !
🐺
Great video, though I'd have given Arnold the win
Stallone is overall more talented and diverse but Arnie is more charismatic on screen.
Arnold for me just from terminator 1 and 2 alone
Back then you had action stars competing against each other:
The 80s Schwarzenegger/Stallone
The 90s Van Damme/Seagal
Can't say the same for today's so called action stars.
There has already been a Face-Off. Stallone is still angry he played in the comedy Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot which was a critical and box office disaster. He signed onto the film based on rumors that Schwarzenegger was interested in the lead. Schwarzenegger said that, knowing the very poor script, he faked interest in starring but would demand so much money the producers would try to hire Stallone. A total knockout for Arnie!
nothing beats Terminator 2
"DIE HARD" is not a Christmas movie. Even if all Christmas elements are taken out, the movie can still exist.
Arnie for me.
True Lies, The Villain... two great films. Plus I don't like what Rambo became (First Blood is a moving film) and never liked Rocky. But Stallone does have Demolition Man
Oscar! Completely underrated comedy - this is movie builds and builds on itself and then pulls the thread that unravels everything!
These 2 guys literally dominated the 1980's action landscape. But where Arnie was starting to flounder in the 1990's with Last Action Hero & Batman & Robin, Stallone was making a comeback with Cliffhanger & Demolition Man. Is it me or is it cold in here? One of Sly many iconic lines.
Arnold for me. When i think of action films or actors in action films he's the one that i think of first like a reference. Sly and arnold made action movies look more modern compared to guys like Chuck Norris and Charles Bronson in my opinion
Rocky and Rambo can't trump Terminator, Conan, and Predator.
I'd throw Commando in there too. I think it's the most pure action movie ever made. It's the 80s action genre rolled up into one film. It doesn't even care about plot. That's just there to support the one-liners and explosive action.
Rocky n Rambo were better.
The 80s should have been given to Arnold... I love Sly's movies in that decade, but come on: Arnold made Conan, T1 and Predator.
Both of them are great. Arnold has better movies but Sly is the ultimate badass action hero.
I would like to see Kurt Russell vs Patrick Swayze, Van Damme vs Seagal, Mel Gibson vs Travolta and Mickey Rourke vs Bruce Willis.
🤘🏻🎅🏻
When was this originally written? Prey has been released and it was really good.
I'd re-watch Tango & Cash long before I'd re-watch Rocky or Rambo!
Both are good but no one can compare to Jackie Chan! Rumble in the Bronx! Cmon!!
