A complex web of cash transactions, layers of separation and cunning moves kept Al Capone out of handcuffs for most of his notoriety.
But in the end, his paperless empire was exactly the paper-trail which led to his undoing. How? Because the US government couldn’t nail Capone on charges of bootlegging, extortion, or murder - so they nailed him for tax evasion.
As Saul Goodman explains to Jesse Pinkman, paying taxes is the difference between a criminal and a convict.
Heck, even the Joker knows to report his earnings.
Capone learnt the ropes early on, which paid dividends when it was his time to shine. But it was his mixture of criminality and his law-abiding nature that gave him the perfect training ground
Capone was born January 17th, 1899 to immigrant parents from Naples. Yet, he identified more as an American than as an Italian. Apparently, his patriotism was so strong that he never hesitated to correct people on his US citizenship.
No doubt this sense of pride came from his parents: Gabriele, a barber, and Teresa, a seamstress. [1]
Both worked tremendously hard to provide for their nine children. As any child of immigrant parents know, they don’t take any BS! This work ethic rubbed off on Capone so well that he was even living up to that standard when he was running with kids on the street, like the ‘Junior Forty Thieves’ and ‘Bowery Boys’. Whether it was vandalism or petty theft, Capone made sure to do wrong things the right way.
It’s time to learn How History Works as we study ‘How Al Capone’s Business Structures Kept Him Out of Prison (For A While)
