The various characters and factions within Star Wars it's self was inspired by tons real-world historical setting. The term stormtrooper was conceived by Germany ever since WW1 to refer to their version of shock troopers and later Sturmabteilung (Storm Detachment) troops by the SS during WW2.

The US stopped officially declaring war a long while ago and simply started "military actions". Declaring war comes with certain international and US legal obligations and ramifications that have since been bypassed. Also avoids the ICC.
Except that the ICC still judges all conflicts, the problem is when the other side doesn't cop to the ICC until its over. Middle Eastern countries, I'm looking at you. Often times the ICC just dismisses these claims.
Executing POWs does not work towards victory, it makes it harder. If the enemy thinks they might be executed if they surrender, they will fight harder, thus killing more of your men.

Agree. War is cruel. Someone said it should be made a mortal sin. Such a disconnect between the people who carry out wars and those who fight and die in them.
