Plain and simple, there are some songs that fit Tarja's style better, and there are songs that fit Floor's style better. Heck, there are a few songs that Annette killed it on. Some songs just fit certain styles better. All 3 singers have their strong points. Enjoy them all for what they contributed to the band.

Fun fact, this performance is so iconic, in live shows TODAY with Floor, people still go "HEY!" on that part where Tarja commands it, even if Floor doesn't do it herself.
I love your Tarja description!! I'm happy Floor is in Nightwish and I feel like she's one of the best performers in the world, but Tarja's Charisma and "other-worldness" is definitely something else entirely.

That fantasy feeling you feel about Tarja is due to the music as much as it is Tarja herself, early Power Metal Nightwish was very fantasy based and very much had that aura of fantasy around them like much Power Metal does.
@Designated Shitposter they had elements of power metal early on, they also could be classified as gothic metal, and even progressive metal, and with the addition of Troy they add folk elements.
It's a matter of opinion, but most metal is a mix of various other subgenres of metal

Next Nightwish song needs to be one of the Tarja classics that really rock. Either Kinslayer, 10th Man Down or Wishmaster. 10th Man down is the most interesting lyrically, but Kinslayer is such a killer track.
There is certainly an ethereal quality to Tarja, and I also understand why some people are completely dedicated to one or the other. I think Floor works best on her and Annete's material. But Tarja's vocal delivery is so unique that her songs will always belong to her.
In Greek Mythology Sirens were creatures that would sing incredibly beautiful songs to lure sailors to their doom. They were as I recall it mermaids essentially, and incredibly beautiful. But could enthrall the hearts and minds of men with their voice.

Honestly, it comes down to the song. This song was much more of a Tarja song. Nightwish have a bunch of songs where they suit Tarja better, others that suit Anette (Storytime, Scaretale), some that suit Floor better. Tuomas is very good at targeting his music to his vocalist. To me, it's not about which singer is better for Nightwish, but about Tuomas and his extraordinary songwriting
I told Vin I felt this particular one was best introduced wth Tarja. it would not have been appropriate any other way. Thats the live version that she had on DVD :)

@@The_Pony The band did drop quiet abit once she did leave. the band has been working hard but havnt really recoverd from her leaving. That shows how much she's added to what fans/people recognize as Nightwish and what fans/people are looking for in their sound.

I literally cried when i heard this song live, a couple. Of years ago, Nightwish saved my life , no joke. And this song is an anthem to me, as a young teenager, my life was in pieces and their music saved me from my darkest hour and this song was playing during that darkest time. Happy birthday Pony!!!

That live performance is from Wishes to eternity. I recommend / dead boy's poem live performance. You would hear Tarja's vocal mid range high notes on dead boy's poem live performance.

I saw them play live in Ilosaarirock back in 1999. Pharaoh Sails To Orion was the last song of their setlist and i still remember how hard Tarja hit the last note! 20 years later i'm still impressed.

Exactly...anything off End of an Era just destroys any notion that FLoor is somehow better. Not saying FLoor isnt good...but there is no comparison when you have a good singer sing someoneesle original songs. Of course FLoor sounds good playing Tarjas songs. But she isnt better.

that's why Nightwish was special, because they sounded like they were pulled out from a magical world. now they're just a metal band, pretty much a parody of themselves. Nightwish with Tarja inspired tens of bands to play symphonic metal with operatic vocals.
Nightwish - End of an Era (the entire concert)...By the way, Sori is right about Sirens singing and enchanting people, men particularly. It's part of Greek mythology (Ulises adventures), and German mythology (Lorelei). At this regard, Scorpions has a song called Lorelei (just saying).
Creek Mary's Blood would be a perfect Nightwish song to react to. Also Within Temptation The Howling

To me Tarja's best era was her first 3 albums in Nigtwish, which she sang in classical style (Deep Silent Complete is from that era). Then Tuomas made her change into contemporary singing style for her last 2 NW albums. Thank you for playing early Tarja! Almost every time they play Tarja's songs from End of an Era concert, which are her contemporary style songs mostly.
Floor's Ghost Love Score was differently arranged than Tarja's version. In Tarja's version the background chorus is much louder, and in Floor's version the chorus even completely disappears at one point. When Tarja sings the staccato, you can barely hear her voice from the instruments, but in Floor's version the staccato is heard clearly over the instruments. And yeah the end vocals are missing from Tarja's version. The changes made to Floor's version were made to bring the singer more in front, to be better heard, and that makes the biggest difference between their two versions.
so true, but some today's NW fans will do anything to try to deconstruct the great Tarja, thinking that this somehow, will elevate Floor...please, the lady can stand on her own merits...
Very good analysis!!! At first I had very big problems to listening Floor.... (Because I have been Nightwish fan since 1998) , but nowdays both of them (Tarja and Floor) are same level in my mind (different ways) Thank you for this reaction! :)
Wish more of these folks would have that mindset. To many are stuck in the past and won't give someone else a chance. You can do that and STILL not think less of Tarja. They are both great in their own way.

She's got better control of her voice in the upper registers, she has a much richer timbre in her voice, she can belt out a note whilst adding ornamentation. These are all IMO as a direct result of her Classic Opera training.
That said - I do love Floor as a singer - and where I think she shines best is when she's hitting a note in full voice - whilst Tarja sounds controlled and effortless, Floor sounds like she's putting in 120% on every note - which I also love.
To be clear - Both Ladies are virtually peerless vocalists - but to me, Tarja just edges out Floor. That said - the solution to the problem is for Tarja to do a tour WITH Floor - and they can do a Duet.
I think they're both great. I'd say I like Floor better cos she actually has MASTER CONTROL of her tones and voice, and a wider range of vocal styles she has also mastered. (Including growls) and I think that's why she can be so consistent in her Performances even when she is Ill. the Buenos Aires show VnS reacted to, Floor had the flu during. I cannot say the same for Tarja in consistency. Floor Studied quite extensively too, just not so far into Opera as Tarja.
Tarja, obviously, has the upper hand with Opera JUST because she studied that exclusively. She, too, has master control of her voice BUT she doesn't exercise that anymore like she used to (it's an obvious difference between the End of an Era DVD and From Wishes To Eternity in her performance. you can tell how much she's become disconnected just from the DVD footage, she is disconnected from the music and her emotion. the fuel there is the audience for her, In my opinion, not the passion. you can clearly see nowdays what Tuomas had seen then, too, in her solo work. she'd become arrogant. she is sweet as can be if you meet her on the right day, so I have heard, though I read that she's kinda hard to work with as is Tuomas (though the only people aside from fans who act like they toured with the band who claimed that were Sami and Anette as far as I know)
As for Floor, I think people misunderstand my love for her came from before she was ever in Nightwish. EVEN AS A NIGHTWISH FAN I loved Floor AND Tarja very much. they are my top 2 alongside Queen Doro Peche. (Doro is forever the metal Queen, fite me hahaha

Sirens were mythological creatures similar to mermaids who's song could enchant anyone. In greek mythology their song would enchant sailors and they would blindly sail into rocks where their ship would sink. Sori, you're thinking of The Illiad where Odysseus, on his way home from Troy, had his crew stuff their ears with wax to block out the siren's song and tie him to the mast with his ears unblocked so they could tell when they were safe.

This is the song that got me into Nightwish back in the early 2000's. I love Floor with them, but Tarja is the one who drew me into this style of music. There is a dark overtone to her voice that is
just unmatched to my ear. Her singing style with the symphonic metal was just perfect.
Sorry, commenting before I've watched the whole video but OMG I can't believe you are the first ones doing the comparison (that I've seen) and getting what it was like to be an old school Nightwish fan. Many of the old favourites just do not work when part of the reason why it is your favourite is how the singer interprets it and how their voice works with the song. I took somewhat of a break from Nightwish when they were switching singers. Now, I've come to love Floor with many other songs and I don't think Tarja or Anette could hope to top those performances. That said, Deep silent complete and some other old songs are strictly in the Tarja's domain for me.

If the next song is going to be a Tarja version as well, I would recommend either "The Pharaoh Sails to Orion" or "Beauty and the Beast" from the "From Wishes To Eternity" live dvd. Those two songs highlight the origins of Nightwish, the metal opera side. Or "Sleeping Sun" and "The Siren" from the dvd "End Of An Era", more of a metal balad side (you also have "The Phantom of the Opera" from that dvd, but everyone and their mom have reacted to that one, and you might wanna keep it somewhat original?).
There's so much to choose from the first 5 albums. Passion and the opera, stargazers, kinslayer, fantasmic, beauty of the beast, beauty and the beast, ocean soul, romanticide, kuolema tekke taiteilijan, etc

Well, both of them are equally good, but both in their own way. And better in different songs.
The thing is: both songs (Deep Silent and Ghost Love Score) are written specially for Tarja. And GLS is so much better with Floor, even it is not her style. That is incredible for me. She is better in about half of Tarjas songs, then Tarja is. (And better in every song after Anette), Also Tarja have problems ti do them right these days. Sadly.
Also, you've heared best official version with Tarja and only phone cam with Floor with this one. I'm looking forward to official version and then the comparision will be interesing.
Also for me Tarja is unbeateble in her very narrow style and bad when she have to do something little off... Floor is much more versatile and absolutely great in changing styles between songs and sometimes in one song alone (GLS, Poet and the Pendulum,...)

Definitely!!! The first 3 albums are the best. Century Child i like half the album. Once album is my least favorite. The Endless Forms Most Beautiful is my 2nd least favorite. I think the Anette Olzon albums are great. I think Floor is great with them. But Tarja was something special.

Comparing Tarja and Floor is like comparing pearl and the diamond. I really like that you reacted something from this concert, because it's Tarja at her finest. 19 years ago! Man ... I feel myself so old.
Floor was the best choice for Nightwish after Anette. But the real chemistry, the magic in the sound of the band as a whole was with Tarja. React to the original recordings or live recordings with Tarja first and you'll notice the huge difference when it comes to songs like Ghost Love Score or Stargazers.
ps: I love Floor WAY before she joined Nightwish, to me she's a living legend and a great person, too.
Fantasmic live from the Wishmaster tour dvd. That is a different side of Tarja.
If you want the "complete" Tarja experience. There is a clip of Elevenpath and Fantasmic on youtube. The buildup of those two songs together is the best Nightwish live moment I have ever seen. Watching Tarja is headbanging with the keyboard player and the guitarist might break the divine image you got of her from this song.

This was recorded live in 2000, it was back in the time before Marco, and back when Nightwish had not really made their mark. They were referred to as "That really good band with shitty equipment from Finland"

Don't get me wrong: I prefer the more recent, more elaborate, more epic songs of Nightwish. But this was something different and good, and something that doesn't exist anymore, and this song was one of the good ones of that era along with Kinslayer, Crownless, She is my Sin and others. Hmm, I appreciate all three (female) Nightwish vocalist (I appreciate the male ones too...), I heard Tarja first, having been a fan almost 20 years ago already. I loved Anette, too, and I think Floor is my favorite of them all. They each have songs where they shine during live performances (Ghost Love Score for Floor, Deep Silent Complete for Tarja, something like The Crow, The Dove and The Owl or Meadows of Heavens for Anette) and songs where they don't shine that much (don't much like Floor's version of Stargazers, don't like Tarja on Wish I Had An Angel, Anette was awful on Sacrament of Wilderness). It just depends...
I appreciate the skills that the other vocalists have but I discovered this band when Tarja was still the singer and to me she will always be the best. When I'm in the mood for Nightwish it's the albums with her that I put on.
Oh shit. Man, I usued to listen to this song and this album 24/7 back when it was released. Now I was sitting here, thinking how the hell could you all miss the title of a Nightwish song, because this song never existed. 19 yeas is 19 years, I guess. Time to listen to it again :)
Nightwish wasn't gonna do symphonic metal at first. However, Tarja's voice was so powerful they had to change their genre.
okay, been listening to you guys, if you want a longer song, then you definitely want the Phantom of the Opera, I am certain you will love her version as much as I do.
