disagree with you on the "saying biden is too old for office is ageist" point. there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that biden has deteriorated in the past four years, just compare footage of him even in 2020 to now. no one is saying he shouldn't run just because his age is too high, they're saying that as a result of his age and deteriorating health, he may not have the strength to continue running as president. i agree that taking clips of his gaffs out of context is bad faith though, and i understand how you could come to that conclusion.

Oh if I wasn’t clear, I’m not saying saying Biden being too old is ageist, I’m saying there are criticisms of Biden that people point to that are ageist, such as pointing to small gaffs and such. But it’s not ageist to say there are clear indications of mental decline and acuity.

I think using age as a metric isn't the way to go. Most of the leftists (myself included) were ready to vote for Bernie Sanders, a man older than both candidates. Despite his age, he still has his mental acuity, which is what is important.

Those are his examples of positively influencing the next 6-7 decades. Nothing about climate change, nothing about people getting their rights stripped away, nothing about the housing crisis. Well, as a fellow Canadian, I'm not as worried. I studied government in university. Our constitution and political system makes a lot of things different, such as our Supreme Court. Our politics is interesting, eh. (1) People are getting tired of Trudeau, who has been PM for at least 10 years now. Maybe a new leadership race is required to rescue the Liberal Party. (2) Maybe we need to see Pierre Poilievre become the next PM, just so people can begin to hate the Conservative party again. For the record, his shadow cabinet has openly gay members, though not often talked about. (3) Alberta's Smith and Ontario's Ford governments are conservatives, we see even those governments are vulnerable to following conservative ideas (e.g. Albertan voters want dental and pharma care). (4) Premiers like the ones in Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia who favour parental rights over the trans rights issue can only change laws for temporary periods, given the Supreme Court only allows the 'not-withstanding clause' to be used in 4 year periods. (6) Our Supreme Court has term limits and is appointed in a non-politicized way. Canada's courts were the first in the world to recognize same-sex marriage. Canada is among the most LGBTQ+ welcoming countries in the world (maybe the best one looking at the data), and we have many people who will fight (and who have fought) for a better Canada for all of us.

What is disturbing to me about Biden with this statement he made about "well as long as I tried my best...." it shows a severe lack of empathy. And while I do not stan him and have so many criticisms of him, one of his strengths as a politician is his ability to empathize with others, especially because of his own personal tragedies. Two things can be true at once: voting blue is (sadly) the best thing we can do to avoid fascism right now, as well as getting involved locally. AND democrats are making the same bad choices as republicans by prioritizing party over people. And if democrats want to win voters’ trust back, they have to take our concerns more seriously. Because “we’re not fascists” is not a good enough platform to run on.

    • @juicyjames2074
      @juicyjames2074 25 дней назад

I would argue that mutual aid and direct action is the best we can do to combat fascism more than voting in a system that is designed to be complicit in the exploitation. The U.S. government was designed to be this garbage because it was specifically designed for the rich.
Fascism is reduced when we collaborate and build self-reliable communities because it lowers the demand for the state and corporate.
I’m not saying that voting blue is bad, I’m saying that it’s like fighting an evil samurai with the spoon that he gave you.

    • @Tycon
      @Tycon 25 дней назад

No matter what happens its sad honestly. A vote blue is an endorsement of genocide, not voting is sealing our end and thus the false dilemma ahead of us means were screwed either way. If the Democratic party forsake trans people for political favor and cast them aside would you still vote for them because they were still the lesser of two evils. You have to draw the line somewhere. Granted I don't think not voting is the answer either, if you live in a safe state vote your conscience like green or 3rd party. If you live in a swing state that's up to you to decide but I think the outcome looks grim either way. Voting blue locally has done wonders for the mid west and I think local blue voting is still worth your time, but voting blue nationally is a lost cause. The plan can't be to win every election until the end of time and really if I were the democratic party I'd do everything in my power to block voting reform, fund trump and keep things as they are now as facism on the doorstep keeps liberals in power thus making no real change in sight.
Unfortunately liberals forced a bad candidate onto us and paved the way for facists like trump to take over. If it's any consolation regardless of outcome we'll do the best we can to safe guard trans people, queer people, people of color and our neighbors but from my point of view the inevitable has only been delayed. This isn't to be a doomer here because we can't give up but we cant just do the same thing over and over and expect anything to change, let's pull a Ceaser and create a 3rd option please. Replace Biden, keep Biden, kill a couple thousand more Palestinians the future is bleak and the best efforts we really have is local and ground roots building.

I share your anxieties. Sadly, the President is who we got. I'm trying not to be flippant here. There were better candidates back in 2016 and 2020, but the Democratic electorate didn't choose them. In both cases the Democrats primaried 90s nostalgia. Now we have an incumbent in Joe and the "political wisdom" we are still following says that the party supports its incumbent. The debate had very unbalanced expectations. We who vote in opposition to Trump expect him to be a Clown and a Showman. We wanted President Biden to be an Elder Statesman. There is a gulf of difference between those expectations. Trump is free to lie and contradict himself so long as he does it with confidence. Biden has to be accountable for his words, facial expressions, and even his hesitations. Both men are ancient. They are displaying that age in different ways. Biden is showing the rambling of a papaw who has decades of experiences that all demand expression at once. Trump displays the unhinged ranting of a mind blissfully detached from reality. But the Republicans are not going to call out Trump. Everyone who has done so is now out of the Republican Party or simply ignored. One solution would be to have more parties with greater than 2% of the vote. But for the past 40 years "compromise" has been a death sentence in Federal Politics. In the reality of 2024, the choice is binary and clear. Trump has to lose, else there won't be elections in 2028 or even possibly 2026.
It took the Republican party 60 years of effort to bring themselves to this point of Trumpism. There's been 4 generations of authoritarian conservatism working on this. Any similar change in Democracy will take at least as long. We have to do the work now. Knowing full well it's our children's children's children who will enjoy the result.
That prospect of building something that won't be ready till long after many of us have passed is anathema to where our culture is. This is a Hard Sell. But I gain hope by what a close friend told me back in 2016 after Trump was elected. He was raised by lesbian mothers. He reminded me that we've never seen the power of Queer political organization. How a Lesbian will stare down a Police Dog on the protest line. How a band of Proud Gay activists can motivate a city. How a Trans woman can shine like a beacon and a Trans man can out butch the hardest crewcut bigot in a button down. We survived AIDS when the Reagan Government hoped we would just die quietly. We have been defying the Trumps and Bidens and Clinton's and Bushes for as long as there has been a Untied States.
Keep speaking out Jessie. Its your voice and the voices like yours that will grind Trump and the MAGA movement into dust. Preach to the choir. The Choir needs to sing it out. We will get to fight at the polling place under a second Biden administration. I really fear that we'll be fighting in the street for our lives under a Trump dictatorship.

The only upshot for me is that I live in Pennsylvania, where our deadlock has kept any anti-LGBTQ legislation from even reaching the state Senate, so as long as I stay here I'll hopefully be able to transition relatively safely (I hope)

Individual ego is part of the issue, but one reason politicians stay in office too long is that their States don't want to lose power / influence at the national level. And yes, they want to keep those relationships developed over years or decades with other politicians (U.S. and foreign) and industry leaders. I'm not saying that's right, but it's reality. Maybe term limits are the solution, though good luck getting lawmakers to voluntarily limit their own power and influence (or that of their States). As for whether Biden should step aside, I'm really torn. Realistically, who would be most likely to win Pennsylvania? Or Michigan? Or Arizona? I don't know, but the battleground States are really the only States that matter in any modern U.S. election. I don't like that, either, but there's so much political inertia in the U.S., I don't see us doing away with the antiquated Electoral College.

Excellent video as usual, thanks so much for putting this in the world. As a straight, white, CIS male I recognize that I have less to fear in this election than many. However, as a son, husband, brother of sisters, and father of a bi daughter I am incredibly anxious and depressed about everything that has happened in the last few weeks specifically. It's been too long since there has been an actual "left" in the US. There are the republicans who have an organized agenda and have been working towards it for decades, and then there are the democrats who are basically just running on a platform of "we're not as bad as republicans". Then you look at the supreme court decisions that have legalized gerrymandering, corruption, and "immunity" while undermining voting rights and regulatory agencies and it all starts to seem overwhelmingly hopeless. I really wanted to find something positive to end with, but the best I can come up with is trying to get to San Fransisco in time to meet up with Sisko and Bashir to kick off the Bell Riots.

I agree but I am also a realist. Shaming people into voting may work on people who always vote, but it's not going to motivate the people who are generally non voters. The only reason Biden beat Trump in 2020 is because of a massive turn out from young people and others who don't usually vote. Your not going to shame them into it, and honestly it just makes things worse. Remember 2016? They need to be excited to vote. Voting for Trump is like going to the Doctor for Viagra and voting for Biden is like going for your flu shot. One is a visit your excited for and the other is the responsible thing to do. Now how often do people actually get their flu shot? See the problem?

Truthfully, I’ve been considering a Jill Stein vote for a while now, but it’s only because I live in South Carolina, a state that is unlikely to ever flip blue, at least not in my lifetime. She’s become increasingly popular with several of Biden’s key demographics, particularly Arab Americans, and I believe she has an actual fighting chance, if not for the presidency itself, then to finally push the needle for federal funding of a 3rd party.
All that being said, I do encourage swing state voters to absolutely choose Biden and, as a very anxious lady, I’ll probably lose my nerve in the booth 😅

@@NATE-op9tqI'm not going to say it like _this._ That's a butthole take, I'm afraid.
What I will say is that it's hard to tell others to vote for Biden when you, yourself, don't vote for him. Technically, no one individual's vote matters. Even in most swing states. But if we're advocating for others to cast a vote they feel awful about for "the greater good," we should also take on that emotional grossness of voting for that person too.
As for third parties, I think the work to get 3rd party candidates has to start at the local level. These candidates need to be state representatives and governors and mayors _first_ with a record of successes and with government experience to know the system and begin to understand how to disrupt the system once in office.
I don't think the presidential election is the time to act towards third-parties...just yet.
We need a really good, really thoughtful, really charismatic candidate who can show the public at-large they really can do the job.
And unfortunately, even Jill Stein (I like the Green party, but she, herself, is not ideal with some of her less than demonstrative takes on medicine) has to be far better than either of the red/blue candidates and be perceived as such to at least 25% of voters.
If I see a third party candidate with 15% in polling early or 25% later in polling, I'd consider voting for them. Until then, the time to advocate for those candidates begins...the day after the presidential elections.

I think the larger conversation around competence to be president is a debate we should've had a long time ago. I've felt concerned since the caucus round when it felt like everything was already figured out. There was no pushback then and we're living with that result. It's honestly what has made this year a fairly anxious one with me because how everyone felt after that debate is how I've felt since the election cycle started. Beyond age, I feel like the subtext of Biden ushering in the next generation of politicians without helping a viable candidate is unfortunate. My first election was in 2008 and part of me remains bright-eyed about voting for Obama. I have no issue with Biden as a personality. However, I've come to realize in 2024 that beyond any age concerns (which yes, are valid), I'm less sympathetic to him keeping the job because he's been vice president for eight years and president for four. He's been around the oval office for 12 years. This move feels misguided and greedy in some respect on top of the sense that old people are insecure letting go of power.
Also, as you've pointed out, I just don't know that what he's done counterbalances things enough. Something about watching his state of the unions turn into comedy club crowd work while he recycles half a line about helping trans people doesn't fill me with confidence. I'm worried if he loses and greater bigotry takes hold, but I'm also not sure him winning will be moving the country in the right direction. I don't know. I'm trying to have a good year but the news even in its mundanity makes me nauseous.

Thank you for this video, like your many others, that bring in the necessary nuance. In my own journey to wrestle with my privileges in society, I remember wondering if one of my defining positive traits other people see me as having, patience, serves as a asset or impediment to addressing societal systems of oppression. As an individual, it does mean I am willing to allow other voices (less heard voices) go first and give them the space they need. On the other hand, it can also mean that, especially considering the lifetime of encouragement in thinking individually, that I don’t automatically think about how my “patience” might also be negatively impacting others as well. While I don’t think I have figured it all out yet, I think I have found space to at least separate my concept of patience from supporting cultural inertia, through developing professional development opportunities for my peers, interns and building systems that don’t require me to operate efficiently…Our current situation is not great, and our country needs big, audacious ideas to move us truly forward but in reference to (my interpretation of) your message, it will be significantly harder to bring these ideas to the table in one scenario, especially in the context of the greater amount of harm that scenario can bring. Recognizing my lack of control in this, I hope you get a little shit as possible from this video.

I hate to be this way, especially after criticizing my republican dad for always voting party first, but I'm going to vote for Biden strictly for party reasons. This country does have a weird, screwed up way of seeing old people. I know a lot of people under the age of 50 who've spent zero time with the elderly (they only visited grandma a few times their whole life or never knew their grandparents or what have you). They're getting exposed to REAL aging through their parents now and they have no idea how to handle it. Sometimes they're blind to their cognitive decline; sometimes they're acutely aware of it because there's a personality change in their parent. But either way, it's their first exposure to what an old person is really like. Call it sheltered, idk. Biden *is* too old. He was too old the first time around. And so is Trump. Cognitive impairments or not, neither one of them will live long enough to be affected by their own presidential/party's choices. If anything, they'll be the least affected--It's not like they'll be drawing social security or worrying how/if medicare will cover their nursing home bill. It's all about legacy when you're that old. Trump wants to plant a tree from which only his family will get fruit. Biden wants to plant a tree to provide shade for everyone, if even a short while.

Not only do I get criticism for being not as supportive of Biden as I “should be”, I also get criticism from leftists for voting in the first place, but I’ve been calling it damage control. I live down the street from my polling place and I’m almost always even off on Tuesdays; there’s no reason not to do the one small thing I can do to prevent theocratic autocracy. I can’t even ever remember an election where I wasn’t wishing I had a better option, and the last time I remember feeling hopeful about the system’s ability to evolve to better serve the people was the 90s. 9/11 changed the political environment into what it is to day, and if less than 8000 people in new Hampshire had decided to vote with damage control in mind instead of voting for Nader, Florida would not have mattered, and we might be having a different conversation right now. My state is not going to Trump any more than yours, but I will do my part, small though it is. I can’t summon the energy to drive to PA in October and November to knock on doors for Biden, as I partly feel I should do, but the one small thing, I can do.

I think it referred to how Ronald Regan outlasted 4 or 5 different presidents that the USSR had. I think they were all either older or the same roundabout age as him. I think the tagline was something about how the US outlasting the leading brand as some parody of the durraell tagline. I can't rembmer it exactly.

When people talk about tactical voting, why isn't the conversation more focused on the electoral college? The fact is, due to the electoral college, not all votes for President are equal. (It does tend to be far more equal for local elections and down ballot elections, but it flatly is not true for the federal Presidential election). If I didn't live in a swing state there is no chance I would vote for Biden (unfortunately it appears I am going to be in one, which in and of itself is evidence of how bad a situation the Biden campaign is in). What is the purpose of pleading with (or when it comes to liberal centrists, gaslighting) people in deep blue or deep red states to vote for a specific candidate? Anyway other than that, lots of good points raised in this video. People should be able to vote for a candidate and still hold them accountable and criticize them. The fact that they looked at his approval numbers, they looked at the state of his health and they didn't even think "Let's make Harris the for-runner. All the benefits of being incumbent without the concerns facing Biden" is baffling. Now we're four months out from the final election and they're thinking about replacing him? Openly talking about it? The optics are *awful*, it makes the party look incompetent and disorganized (which they are, but still). I'm so tired of voting exclusively because "If I vote for democrats my rights will be stripped *slightly* slower than if I vote for republicans"....

@@Isengardtom Complicated question needs a complicated answer. MAGA voters hate Harris. So, a nomination of Harris means going after the undecided (center and center-left) voters while shoring up the base. Most polls right now show that she would get a bit higher percentage against Trump than Biden but she's far from a lock to win, it would be a very close election. She has been critiqued (appropriately) for her role as an Attorney General in California when it comes to sentencing guidelines and not standing up strongly enough to the prison-industrial complex, but those people who are the most concerned about this issue are still likely to vote for Harris given that the choice is Trump. There are many Democrats who would prefer Senator Bernie Sanders or California Governor Gavin Newsom. But I suspect these voters would in the end vote for Harris if she is nominated.
It really comes down to undecided voters.
Many Democrats are worried about whether the US is prepared to elect a woman who has a Mixed-Race background such as Harris, and this concern strikes me as an excuse not to support her that points a mirror at the person raising the concern. I do get the impression that some of the antipathy about Harris is grounded in misogyny and racism. Something I find interesting though I don't know of any data on this is that there seems to be antipathy for Harris among many white feminists in the Democratic Party, cue the long-running discussions about white feminism and corporatized feminism. That's not to say Harris would satisfy those on a site like this who lean left; let's not mistake her for that. Harris is a highly skilled attorney and can stand up in a debate. She's sharp and has a strong backbone. I think she'd have a real shot at winning. Is she a perfect candidate from a leftist point of view? No. Absolutely not. But in my view she'd have a better chance than Biden.

Unfortunately though I must respectfully hard disagree with voting for Biden under any circumstances. I am an organizer in North Texas and I work closely with comrades in the local PYM chapter. They are some of the most ferociously dedicated, relentlessly hopeful, warm and inspiring people that I have ever met. I have learned so much from them not just about politics but about humanity itself and my place in it. I can not in good conscience sign my name under a vote for Biden and have to face my Palestinian comrades in the movement that I talk to almost daily. Whose vigils I attend, whose rallies I promote, whose trust I have gained through months of showing up when they've required it of me. Am I personally at risk of losing access to my HRT under Trump? Yes. Though I would say under Biden trans people have already sustained immense repression and attack. Is that a risk I am willing to take versus going to the grave knowing that I voted affirmatively to empower one of the most sociopathic murderers modern in history? Yes. I choose to put myself at risk rather than sign my name on that ballot.

"I can not in good conscious sign my name under a vote for Biden and have to face my Palestinian comrades.."
What exactly do you think Trump is going to change about it either way? The guy flagrantly called Biden a "weak Palestinian" as an insult, they're nothing to him. At least under Biden, Gaza received about $9 billion in humanitarian aid. I'm not saying that makes up for or justifies anything, but what exactly do you think Trump is going to other exacerbate the butchering of the Palestinian people in order to wash our hands of it and move on to the next? What difference do you really think you'd be making other than contributing to fucking over EVERYONE instead of attempting to reduce as much harm that your ballot could possibly cast? To me, it sounds more like your sucking your own dick.
"yes, I choose to put myself at risk rather than sign my name on the ballot"
Except it's not just you that's in danger, honey. It's everyone who has transitioned, married within the same sex, are in need of medical care due to complications related to their pregnancies, immigrants who've built a life here and are at risk of literally being snatched from their families by the government. The list goes on and on.
I'm not saying Biden is even a good answer. Someone else put it aptly in these comments "Trump is the firing squad and Biden is the wall that they are backing us into" but he is our only answer, he is the only way we get time to empower and put up our upcoming leaders, to organize, and start to get this country to walk the path we want it to.

Seriously. Palestine is a hundred year conflict between two groups of people with almost unlimited hate crimes between them against both populations. Just go and read about Mandatory Palestine and the shitshow that took place there over nearly two thousand years now. It's the centrepiece for three different major religions and has had wars fought over it for most of the thousand.
Gaza is not important to you right now. Do you think Palestine will give you asylum if Trump comes after you?
You have been manipulated. Get your head straight. It is way more important for you to protect yourself than to virtue signal for Gaza right now, besides the obvious problem that Gaza is going to get a hundred times worse if Trump does get in.
Do you think when they write your epitaph after the persecution starts, it will go "Panegelsaya, stuck to their guns on a foreign conflict that escalated after they didn't vote against the candidate who escalated, and we salute them for enabling this"?
Wake up! Fucking hell. You're voting away your damn democracy because you disagree about a foreign conflict that was probably started by the guys who fed you the propaganda! Gaza is a shitshow. It's a horrible, horrible crime against humanity. But its the latest in a long goddamn series of them there, and it ain't be stopped because you didn't vote.
Do your damn duty. Fuck. Saving you people from yourselves must be a full time fucking job. You might not want to survive the next five years but a lot of people around you do.

I agree with many of your points here, but I do want to defend Biden in one respect: the people he's appointed are some of the most progressive people in the executive branch. We've got an FTC cracking down on monopolistic practices, a Department of Labor that's actually pro-Union, a FCC that reinstated net neutrality, and an IRS more interested in collecting back taxes from multimillionaires than auditing the middle class. That's all Biden's influence, and all positive reasons to vote for Biden specifically and not just "whatever Democrat that's opposing Trump".
Would I prefer a candidate that was more progressive? Absolutely! But until such a time as a candidate to the left of Biden can win a primary, I think Biden's more than good enough.
