    This was helpful. I’m deciding to major in Professional Writing either in business/tech, or public relations/general, and I’m leaning towards tech after leaning more about it.

    Hello sir, It's an honor to listen to such wisdom, thank you for expressing
    I am 25 y/o and i draw cartoon characters and scenes in blender and prev. used macromedia flash,
    i also made some electronic dance beats from 2018, now as I reached a crucial part of life where you have to be clear about your life path or true calling or purpose, so I just made some list of things I am interested in and when I do there things, I just keep loosing the track of time. I noted that Its slightly hard for me to open pc laptop then just open a notebook and write my planning of day ahead or at the end of day. or just write programming languages like java, c++ and JavaScript. like to teach my findings to my few friends nowadays as I am grasping some concepts.
    thank you for reading
    All the best

      Try meditation to concentrate your mind and increase your attention span. 10 or 20 minutes a day may do wonders over a period of time.

    Very helpful. Im an attorney and am tired of practicing law so I'm trying to find a job wherein I already have a skill. Technical writing might be a good move but really want an location independent job. Any remote jobs for technical writers? Thanks for this video!

      Nola, telecommuting is more accepted than ever right now due to COVID-19 pandemic. There are a lot of writers working from home these days, including yours truly. This is a good time for those working from home. VPN makes telecommuting even easier (see my recent video on VPN). Since you are an attorney, I highly recommend plainlanguage.gov/resources/content-types/legal-profession/ and also a book: "Legal Writing in Plain English" by Bryan A. Garner. Good luck!

    I am desperate to get my foot in the door. I am currently a teacher and am looking for a career. Do most jobs offer on the job training ?

    • @TechWrite
      @TechWrite  4 года назад +11

      Christy, most jobs offer on the job training in the sense that there is no way for a tech writer to know in advance all the systems, gadgets, and software that a company or client uses. Technology progresses too fast for that. There is necessarily a period during which you will be allowed to get familiar with the product or service you'll be asked to document. However, you should still be able to write in plain English on day number one and know the basic components of a technical document. That's why a portfolio is important that includes at least one well-written user guide to offer as a proof of your skills. I wish you well in your job search. You may want to search my web site www.tcc6.com for "jobs" for more help and ideas.

    I got my first technical writing gig by transferring electromechanical drafting, technical illustration and mechanical ability. I worked with Boeing in Mesa as an illustrator. When I got laid off, a technical recruiter saw my potential and recommended a technical writing opening with a semiconductor capital company in Chandler. I would later get a role with Intel's Ocotillo campus in Chandler.

    I'm from Canada and I'm struggling to find a job as a technical writer despite finishing a certificate program in technical writing and having done some TW stints at my former employers, including an unpaid work placement practicum. Can you let me know how I can increase my chances of finding work in the field?

      I’m not a fan of udemy. And their course prices drop and rise regularly.
      At least in IT they’re not very good.
