  • Huge thanks to Jesse Buckner for letting me use his badass rock song in a mixing video.
Gain structure is the name of the game on this one, I get the balance set, then go through the EQ, compression and effects. At the end I master it with a Garageband Mastering Preset.

Thanks a million to Lewin pulling back the veil of gain staging for me here. I certainly learned a lot from this breakdown and love the new life you've put into the tune. Also many thanks for the kind words, it's so cool to see others dig my tune.
I do run the Supro line out to my audio interface, so I was always under the impression that a cab simulator was needed. I'm pretty blown away with the tone that supro brings just via the preamp stage.
    Thanks again Lewin.

Seven & a half minutes in: If I get nothing else from this than that you can type in an exact value for the faders, this may be the best video on GarageBand I’ve ever watched. 🙂

Wow...what an enlightening video. Now I know just how much I don't know about using Garageband. I'm self taught and I'll be reviewing this video often. Thanks, Lewin!

The old subtractive/additive question. I think it depends on the material. For bad recordings I prefer subtractive eq.
But at the end of the day it’s really equal if you do it the subtractive or additive way, the results should be the same, if you do it right. Additive is more fun, but can fool you by getting louder. And sometimes you just need best of both.
    Great mix

Good song Jesse-It was very listenable even before Lewin got his mitts on it! Lewin-Thanks-one of your best videos eva!Good to see you (hopefully)back in the groove.Especially got a lot of all the compressor/gain stuff."Long live "hitting the SMASH button!"I would have loved to hear other choices you might have considered.Random thoughts:How does 2 vocal tracks,2 guitar tracks and a bass track equal 4 tracks and a drummer track?I saw what appeared to be a track labeled "guitar.bass.drums bus" at the top. Whats the story behind that?! I learned alot from all the choices that were made and the ones that were not made.Starting with the "So Cal"drums.Am under-appreciated kit in mt mind.In future videos you can at least see if any thing special might have been done in that area-or was it simply splitting a track when you wanted a fill? Guitars:I for one did prefer the addition of the amp designer-it sounded less natural! I heard some little offensive tones when a track was soloed.Maybe feedbackWould turning the noise gate back on have helped?I thought there was a part towards the end of the song got too low in the mixThe bass was too low in the mix.i could always hear the kick....Loved the spread wide chorus effect-Im gonna save that one in my back pocket! You were on the right ttack with the thought of the"Hendrix vocal" I wished you hadn't given up so early! What about dicking around(engineers term) with a FLANGER type effect?Maybe one day when you're bored or want to challenge yourself if you're ever crazy enough to do New Music Mondays.you can throw it in there! Thanks again

Wow....I didn't even know about the signal going past the ball. Could explain a little more about the solution when that happens on the individual tracks. Please

Amazing stuff as always Lewin. You have helped me more than I can say.
Question for ya, I just bought my first good bass and am having problems getting good bass tones with GB. Some are okay but a lot of them are muddy (for lack of a better word). Any chance you could do a tutorial as to how you record bass? Amp vs DI (in GB), mic choice etc etc. Any help would be so much appreciated. Cheers my friend.
