Lyrics:
Well the wicked king of clubs awoke
And it was to his queen turned
His lips were laughing as they spoke
His eyes like bullets burned
The sun's upon a gambling day
His queen smiled low and blissfully
Let's make some wretched fool to pay
Plain it was she did agree
He send his deuce down into diamond
His four to hart, and his tres to spade
Three kings with their legions come
Preparations soon where made
They voted club the days commander
Gave him an army face and number
All but the outlaw jack of diamonds
And the aces in the sky
Well, he gave his sevens first instructions
Spirit me a game of stud
Stakes unscarred by limitation
Between a man named Gold and man named Mudd
Club filled Gold with greedy vapors
Till his long, green eyes did glow
And Mudd was left with the sighs and trembles
Watching his hard earned money go
Flushes fell on Gold like water
Tens they paired and paired again
But the aces only flew through heaven
And the diamond jack called no man friend
The Diamond Queen saw Mudd's ordeal
Began to think of her long lost son
Fell to her knees with a mother's mercy
And prayed to the angels every one
The Diamond Queen, she prayed and prayed
And the Diamond Angel filled Mudd's hole
The wicked King of Clubs himself
Fell in face down in front of Gold
Now, three kings come to Clubs command
But the angels from the sky did ride
Three kings up on the streets of Gold
Three fireballs on the muddy side
The club queen heard her husband's call
But Lord, that Queen of Diamond's joy
When the outlaw in the heavenly hall
Turned out to be a wandering boy
Now, Mudd he checked and Gold bet all
And Mudd he raised and Gold did call
And the smile just melted on his face
When Mud turned over that diamond ace
Now, here's what this story's told
If you feel like Mudd you'll end up Gold
If you feel like lost, you'll end up found
So amigo, lay them raises down

Even when he tells the joke at the beginning his voice has a dry sadness... truly one of the greatest artists ever
This song just leaves me in awe. Genuinely don't have a clue how TVZ wrote this.
Mustve been the pencil in the sky.
Masterpiece.
When I lived in Austin I attended the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in the Clarksville neighborhood, at one time home to Townes Van Zandt, I believe. Great talent and a very spiritual place . I recommend anyone who has the opportunity visit the church. God Bless Townes Van Zandt.
I want to say beyond genius. But it’s such an understatement
All but the outlaw jack of diamonds and the aces in the sky
Top 5 live album of all time 😀
Top 3. Maybe two. Give a little respect😉
"A diamond two is a diamond too, links make a chain freedom brandished." ,dan'
Anyone know what the winning and losing hands were?
looking at the lyrics, my best guess is the winning hand was 4 card- aces, and a side card jack of diamonds, and Mr. Gold lost with 4 kings and the queen of clubs. A statistical anomaly, but a hell of a story.
Non-American here. 10 years working in an english-speaking working environment and still not able to decipher the last sentences of the joke at the beginning...
A drunk stumbling down the street walks up to this cop and says, “Man, somebody stole my car.”
Cop says, “Well, where was it last?”
Man says, “Right here on the end of this key.”
Cop says,“I dunno man. Why don’t you head to the precinct house and report it there. They’ll get you filled out with all the right forms and papers.”
Guy says, “Okay,” starts to walk off.
Then the cop says, “Before you go downtown you’re gonna want to zip up your fly.”
Guy looks down and goes, “Oh man, they got my girl, too.”
