Well, I'm glad to see they remember to make the boss deaths look cartoonishly gruesome. I also like how, unlike Link, Arzette acts like a reasonable person around these weird people. Threatening the mayor with the smart sword logic, questioning the cat for just being on a mountain for no reason, laughing at the horse dudes unintentional puns and even finding a way to permanently kill the bad guy rather than just kick the can down the road. My favorite is the look she gives the gun inventor when she's given 50 souls for ammo. She's clearly wondering where the souls came from, but she's too scared to ask.
She's a lot like princess Zelda from Wand of Gamelon.
@@anitamihholap5926 Zelda was never weirded out by the absurd things happening around her.
@@thatoneguy609 yeah, well, I said a lot like, not exactly like. Plus, in Arzette we're dealing with self-aware humour, while weird things in Zelda are all unironic.

This game actually has a pretty decent story?
It could've coasted on YTP memes and phoned in the rest, but it didn't. The gameplay is really solid, and I found myself genuinely invested in the characters and the world.
Like, it was both a parody and somehow totally sincere at the same time.
It's because it was made with genuine love, not just an attempt to use the YTP community as an easy sale
I also thought it would all be jokes when I bought the game, imagine my surprise when the scenes with Arzette and her father got serious.
@emptyglass7867 Yep. And that's why it turned out as good as it did.
Between this and the new Hotel Mario lines, YTP creators are eating good
It's true. I didn't even follow Hollow Knight, LBP, or Yooka-Laylee, but this cheesy game somehow managed to get its worldbuilding right!
Yeah- like, it’s a pretty basic story, but I liked Arzette and the other supporting heroes immediately in the first cutscene and I really hope this game gets sequels to keep expanding on their world and make it more of its own thing

1.) I love how this game captured the surreal vibes of the first two CD-i Zelda games, what with all the weird gestures, frequent close-ups, and a bizarre take on slapstick. The absurdity of what happens in these cutscenes is often more entertaining than what actually happens in them, which again, is where the (unintentional) appeal of the original CD-i Zelda cutscenes lie.
2.) I don't know if this was intentional or not, but I also love that the animation in this game's cutscenes is as inconsistent as the original CD-i Zelda's games... though not exactly the same way. Like, you can tell the original CD-i Zelda cutscenes varied wildly, as if each one was handled by a different animator or studio, but this mostly was shown in the form of Link and Zelda wearing different clothes or being colored differently. In this game, in addition to different styles, some cutscenes have a lower framerate than others, and I swear a few of them are just traced from 3D models. It all adds to the surreal feeling the cutscenes have as a whole, which again, I love.
3.) As for the story itself, well, needless to say I wasn't expecting the king to die during the middle of the game, kind of out of left field in terms of tone if you ask me. Then again, it helps make the fight against Duke Nodelki more impactful in a way. Still, given the inspiration of this game, I wasn't expecting it to have actual emotional depth or anything.
*SPOILERS*
...
...
...
4.) I was not expecting this game to start teasing sequels. Seeing "Arzette will return..." at the end of the credits made me go "what, really?", and then the Book of Oakurin is shown during the 100% post-credits cutscene with a woman's laughter, and I'm like "dude, really?!" I mean, bring it on, I'll gladly get more Arzette games, I like this setting enough to want to see more of these characters! Still, pretty audacious to tease more games with your first one, when success isn't guaranteed...
...I hope Zazie the demon girl shows up in the next game, I really liked her.

This seems to be missing a few.
Off the top of my head, it's missing Denny's intro dialogue, and the paranoid sailor.
6:16 I find this cutscene particularly interesting. Not that it's bad, but its use of 3D models clashes with everything else in the game. I'm a little curious as to why 3D models were used, when the whole schtick with the CD-i cutscenes is the varying proportions throughout the animation. It's supposed to be crude and inconsistent, and the 3D animation is too smooth and consistent.
From @JimmyDPooper:
That was the scene I animated (alongside the previous beacon lighting scene). The reason it looks like hot dogshit is because I'm not an animator and had no fucking clue what I was doing. I did my best to imitate the CD-i movement and framing style with simple 3D models, then rotoscoped the key frames & filled in the in-betweens afterwards. I had no real animation equipment, so I did it all using a mouse & a 2011 version of GIMP. All in all it took me a literal 100+ hours for that one shitty little cutscene.

13:09 She pronounces french properly, y'all ! SHE PRONOUNCES FRENCH PROPERLY !
It shouldn't be such a miracle, but sadly, it is.
Okay wow it's not perfect though. It's very "Frenglish". Her first lines are pronounced in proper english, but the more dialogue she has, the less english it gets.
I was happy that she pronounces french properly, not with an english accent, but after a while, she starts mixing more and more french words in the sentences, and they're not always placed in the right place.
She says "mon princesse" 😭 It's "ma princesse", the term is feminine. Can we have ONE french character in english fiction where they speak french properly when they do ? 😭😭
Yes, I'm french if you didn't figure it out yet.
It sounds really off to me - I'm english but she lacks a lot of the sort of verbal quirks that french accents should have in english - "I hear fairies hide in the desert" for one. I'd imagine with proper french the h's should be more silent, like they typically are in french words, and the way she pronounces desert just seems completely off for a french speaker, it doesn't have the more french "er" sound, like "deserr". That and she also didn't pronounce Fantastique correctly. I'm pretty sure it's more like "fon"tastique when actually pronounced right, but please correct me if i'm wrong! edit: actually the more I rewatch it the worse it gets. Pretty sure she uses "tres rapidement" incorrectly as well. given the context it should probably have been something like "en un rien de temps", I think?
@@josepholiver1867 Okay so I'll just compile everything that is neither french nor english.
She does seem to pronounce fantastique right, though. And she just pronounces desert like in english, right ? Maybe she goes fast and kinda skips on the T at the end, but I'm pretty sure she was saying it in english.
She pronounces the r right in english most of the time, but then she uses the french r for fairies. But only the second time. The first she pronounces fairies properly.
She also uses the french r for "their" and "working", which is weird since she pronounces it right the rest of the time.
After we get the fairy dust, she says "Oh, terrifique !" Nothing wrong with the pronounciation. Just... Nobody uses that word. Ever. I've never heard anybody use it in my life.
"Dear Royale". She pronounced the r like in french again in "Dear". Also in english, "royal" is an adjective that can be used on its own to replace someone from a royal family, right ? Not in french though. You don't really use that term on its own. It's an adjective only.
"Le Intelligent Gun". So many things wrong with that. First of all, the adjective can go before, but it's most commonly put after the noun. They should have made her say Gun in french too because it sounds weird.
So "Le pistolet intelligent". And in case they wanna insist in putting the adjective before, well when a word starts by a vowel, you turn the "le/la" (masculine and feminine forms of 'the") into " L' ".
So "L'intelligent pistolet". But still "Le pistolet intelligent" works better. Oh yeah also I forgot to mention. She says "Le Intelligente Gun". "Le" and "Gun" are masculine, but "Intelligente" is feminine, as indicated by the e at the end.
The adjective must have the same gender as the noun it's attached to, so it should be "Intelligent" (masculine form of the word) not "Intelligente" (feminine form of the word).
"It'll shoot Couleur Magique" she says. Well she pronounces it right but it's not gramatically correct. It's "Magie de Couleur" (magic of color). Couleur Magique would be "Magic Color" instead of Color Magic.
Like I explained in the original comment, she says "mon princesse". "Princesse" is feminine but "mon" is masculine. Just like the adjectives, the terms like "the" or "my" have to have the same gender as the noun they're attached to.
Therefore, the feminine equivalent of "mon" (ma), should have been used instead. "Ma princesse".
"Forgot" and "powered" with the french r. She was pronouncing english pretty well before that -_-
Sorry if I didn't explain well, it's true that french is rather complex, but whoever wrote this dialogue clearly isn't french.
And the voice actor switches between pronouncing the r like in english and like in french while still speaking english. Weird.
It just baffles me so much. A lot of the french used seems very unnatural, not the way someone who speaks french would use it if they were to add some french in to an english conversation. Pronounciation is all over the place too like you said. I think French is a beautiful language so I just WISH that people would put the effort in to actually proofreading and get more than one take for some of this stuff. Like it annoys me that in the first dialog she swaps between using weapon and arme when describing the gun. I think I already knew the adjective thing before - my girlfriend told me that with French adjectives typically follow nouns except for a few, things like good or bad. Dear Royale bothered me as well, that's something I found sounded really unnatural. Would something like Cher Royal be better? Again please correct me if i'm wrong! Happy to learn more@@Oceane1803edit: also what I meant by french pronounciation is typically when you see a french character in an english work you would expect specific things in the way they speak to hint at them being french. She switches between speaking in an english way and a french way and that sounds really off. I think it would have sounded better if the french accent had been more consistent and she used more of the verbal quirks french people typically use when they speak English with an accent. Things like unvoiced H's at the start of words and whatnot. It just sounds strange when she transitions mid sentence or ends a word in a really hard way - english is a rough language and french is smooth and melodic, there is that juxtaposition that makes it weird hearing her flip-flop between voices.
@@josepholiver1867 Yeah I totally agree with you ! This "french" is not natural at all. As for the royal thing, as I said you can't really use "Royal" as a noun in french, as far as I'm aware. So even saying "Cher Royale" doesn't work.
If she just went full english and said "Dear royal" pronounced like in english, it would have been just fine. Also I'm happy that you appreciate the french language.
Most english-speaking people only think of one thing when they hear the word french, and it's "Oui Oui Baguette", which really annoys me. It was never funny to me.
If you want we can add each other on social media so I can keep helping you with french and we can also just chat about whatever.
Well I'm going to bed right now since it's past midnight in France, but we can continue this conversation and add each other after I wake up, okay ?
@@josepholiver1867 Hey so I'm back. Wanna chat on social media or not ?
Imagine the reaction to this game of someone not in on the joke 🤣
