Mind blowing thing: Tarja was sick during this concert and yet she sang this good🤯 There is now a version with Floor doing it in Nightwish. It is just a mystery to me, how someone can have that much darkness as Tarja, in their voice when singing those high notes. It is so unique. And so beautiful. I recommend that you do Slaying the Dreamer live from this same concert, End of an Era. It is absolutely amazing. Marko gets to sing in it too😁 (always a plus) If you want to hear yet another side of Marko's voice, do Nightwish's song While Your Lips Are Still Red. I absolutely adore that song❤ The reason why this concert is called End of an Era is because this was Tarja's last ever concert with Nightwish. There had been some personal issues amongst the band members.
This performance was the 2005 Helsinki concert(End of an Era DVD). It was Tarja's last Nightwish show, but she didn't know it. She was the only one on stage that didn't. After the concert, the guys gave her the open letter dismissing her from the band after 9 years and 5 albums. She has gone on to a long solo career. Tarja is the most operatic of the 3 female singers. The current version you mentioned , has Dutch phantom Henk Poort as a guest singer. The band never thought they would play this song again after the show you just watched. Until Floor and Henk performed it at the 2019 Beste Zangers TVshow in The Netherlands, where Henk agreed to sing with her if he could join Nightwish for a performance. Marko and Floor never sang this together. What else do you do after that? you ask. This was song #5 in an 18 song set. Song #6 was The Siren. And #8 was their cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's High Hopes with Marko on vocals while she was changing outfits. Marko kills that one too.
This is the song that got me into Nightwish back in 2005! It's so fucking epic and even though I've watched this video a hundred times and heard the song even more, it still brings tears to my eyes. I was able to see them live in 2007 with their second vocalist Anette, and honestly it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. I hope I can see them live again one day - they're just one of those groups that sounds even more amazing live vs studio recording.

Tarja is the original Finnish vocalist and my personal favorite... Nemo was the breakthrough song and her accent and "darkness" she lent to the songs was unique.
This particular song is one of my favourite ones and I've obsessed over it ever since I first heard it in a London theatre. But this performance has been iconic and it's been the one I often return to. Her voice, his voice, the high notes, the rasp, the theatricality of her dress... it has been and will probably always be my favourite one. I'm glad you found it and you enjoyed it, too.
This was my entrance into Nightwish. I was immediately attracted by the clash of the metal with the classical singing. So that clash is what I’m drawn to and so this is my favourite. Bit it’s by no means the only thing Nightwish has to offer. 3 singers, different styles, 2 killer drummers, one of the best guitar players in the world and so underrated. I’m really sorry Marko is gone but the new bass player is very talented. Tuomas is a creative genius and Troy is the cherry on top. I’m slightly obsessed in a good way. Enjoy!

Tarja is a very unique singer, not only she can hit pretty pretty high notes, her voice is also very dark, mysterious and warm at the same time . Also her presence on the stage ...... she's very artistic , singing every word from her heart , always feeling it and very communicative with the audience at the same time . To cut it short , she's simply Da Best you should check her solo career as well , won't be disappointed ;)))

I like Floor the most, most of the time, cuz how well she blends with the band with her more metal/rock vocal abilities but this interpretation of phantom with Tarja and Marko is the one i like the most by FAR. It just works with such a clean, high, classical female vocal and Marko's awesome rock screams. The stark duality is so good.

It is the real song from the actual musical, but they redid some parts of it. It was a really rock song for musical theatre to begin with, but they made it more rock-like

I enjoy her performance here but for me this song is all about Marko and his dark, creepy, metal Phantom. Some of my favorite Tarja songs, where I think her dark operatic voice really shine, are The Siren, Sleeping Sun, Planet Hell and Nemo. I also especially enjoy Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan, one of the few Nightwish songs in Finnish. Very beautiful ballad. Yes you should checkout Floor performing this same song with Henk Poort. Henk is a famous Dutch musical theater/opera performer and was the original Phantom in the Dutch performance of the musical. Floor was a huge fan after seeing him as a teenager. In 2019 she participated in a Dutch reality/singing show called Beste Zangers. Henk was also on the show and was a big part of her wanting to do the show. The last episode is where duets are performed and Floor asked Henk to sing this song. He agreed with the promise that he would get to perform it with her and Nightwish the next time they performed in Amsterdam. Nightwish just recently kept that promise. Their performance on Beste Zangers is my favorite. It is a more intimate performance and the arrangement is taken from the Nightwish arrangement but not as heavy or dramatic. Floor sings with a brighter, more musical theater tone and is able to play with her voice more. They also did a live version during her solo show last year in Amsterdam (on her YT channel). All 3 performances are great but Beste Zangers is my favorite.
This is one of several songs Nightwish no longer does since Marko left. I saw them live last November with Troy singing and as much I love him and his harmonies, he just can’t do what Marko does.

Tarja is a great match for this song. Tarja was an Opera singer and that is where her talent is. It is funny that she never really wanted to get into metal but Tuomas Holopainen convinced her to join the band. She has stated that she had to get extra training to be able to sing with a metal band. People thought she was crazy because symphonic metal was not around back then. She now has her own band which is also symphonic metal. Of all the versions of this song, I think this is the best. Tarja and Marko is great in this song.

Small warning about Tarja's live performances, between around 1999 to 2004 she hardly ever sang at her full potential live (due to voice preservation techniques and how low budget their live shows were then) and many of the videos of her singing live have have wrong FPS causing them to pkay at wrong playback speed (some have had them fixed, but not most) also many of the videos and audio in them are not from same show or even song The official channel's From Wishes to Eternity and this End of an Era has the least of those issues. However, it is notable Tarja was still slightly sick during this performance
Tarja is, hands down, the best female rock vocalist ever, no contest! She's orders of magnitude better than Floor Jensen, both as a vocalist and as a stage presence. Also, her and Marko are the perfect fit for each other. Cheers from Patagonia!
Awesome vocals. I love seeing other vocalists react to this song. Marco is incredible how he gets those highs with rasp and grit in it. I only recently discovered them and am kind of gutted that the bass player left recently. Those harmonies are epic and I love the way how the two singers lift each other to new heights.

That is an E6 she hits to end this song. That's the same note that is in the musical. She absolutely nails it. I have seen this musical in London, at Her Majesty's Theater and she rivals the stage actress in singing that last note
I just watched another reaction of this video before yours and I still had chills ten seconds in. The band was in their prime, I think. Not that they’re not still incredible. I just don’t think they’re as incredible now as they were then.
You should check out other Nightwish songs from the End of an Era concert. It's sadly her last time with them and also where she had fully wedded her operatic voice with a contemporary style.
Definitely listen to the new version. For me, they are companion songs, equal in quality but different in flavor. Tarja & Floor have each performed this song on their own without Nightwish & they are good performances, but only with Nightwish is it EPIC.
Many consider the last PotO with Henk Poort live on official NW:s own pages the best one but for me this is the best bco Marko singing like a beast and the pace speeding up. The best Marko's singing for me is from the same live concert End of an Era, High hopes tribute for Pink Floyd
I agree. Floor is unbelievably talented, but for this one song, I gotta give it to Tarja. Henk is an incredible singer, but what Marco did here is more than Magic!! He truly made it operatic metal. His vibrato’s that he sung were unreal.

Tarja, Marko and Tomas founder members of Nightwish and built the band around Tarja sound. Once they gave Tarja the infamous letter and parted company after that performance. Annette sang with the band until she became pregnant and left the band after not so long . Now up to date with them hiring Floor but Marko has now left the band and occasionally sings again with the goddess that is Tarja in fact they performed phantom of the opera together for the first time in 18 years. Intensity on stage, and in the audience. The lads were upset because this was the night before they gave Tarja the open letter of dismissal from Nightwish. They knew it - she didn't. The drummer, (Jukka) ,suffering from chronic insomnia, had a migraine (how the hell do you drum like that with a headache, never mind a migraine?); Tuomas, the keyboardist, was not feeling well, and was going through emotional turmoil because of the necessary decision to let Tarja go. They all had emotional chaos going on. The pros they all are, they not only got through the concert, but delivered major performances. Love 'em - then, and now, and always.
I really like both Tarja and Floor (with a personal preference for Floor). However you are correct - they are both incredible. I used to say that Tarja was like an operatic knife - her vocals just cut through you. Floor is like a Swiss Army knife. Floor is capable of doing everything well. Floor does the Phantom very well too. I think the main thing I must say is I wish Floor and Marko would have done this together. Marko just makes everything better. He blends so well with both Floor and Tarja. He's like this Metal Spice that just enhances them. Oh BTW with Tarja I used to say she was a specialist - I only heard he sing operatic for the most part. However, after she left Nightwish she re-trained her voice and can now sing easily in multiple genres and sounds wonderful in all of them (and still and Operatic Metal Goddess).
This is the best version of Phantom of the Opera for me. Tarja is still my the most favorite singer. I love her voice and charisma.

Small warning about Tarja's live performances, between around 1999 to 2004 she hardly ever sang at her full potential live (due to voice preservation techniques and how low budget their live shows were then) and many of the videos of her singing live have have wrong FPS causing them to pkay at wrong playback speed (some have had them fixed, but not most) also many of the videos and audio in them are not from same show or even song
The official channel's From Wishes to Eternity and this End of an Era has the least of those issues. However, it is notable Tarja was still slightly sick during this performance

Tarja is, hands down, the best female rock vocalist ever, no contest! She's orders of magnitude better than Floor Jensen, both as a vocalist and as a stage presence. Also, her and Marko are the perfect fit for each other. Cheers from Patagonia!

Awesome vocals. I love seeing other vocalists react to this song. Marco is incredible how he gets those highs with rasp and grit in it. I only recently discovered them and am kind of gutted that the bass player left recently. Those harmonies are epic and I love the way how the two singers lift each other to new heights.
From the same concert you should check out the cover of Pink Floyd’s High Hopes sung by Marco. I promise you it will be worth it.

I just watched another reaction of this video before yours and I still had chills ten seconds in. The band was in their prime, I think. Not that they’re not still incredible. I just don’t think they’re as incredible now as they were then.

You should check out other Nightwish songs from the End of an Era concert. It's sadly her last time with them and also where she had fully wedded her operatic voice with a contemporary style.
Definitely listen to the new version. For me, they are companion songs, equal in quality but different in flavor. Tarja & Floor have each performed this song on their own without Nightwish & they are good performances, but only with Nightwish is it EPIC.

I agree. Floor is unbelievably talented, but for this one song, I gotta give it to Tarja. Henk is an incredible singer, but what Marco did here is more than Magic!! He truly made it operatic metal. His vibrato’s that he sung were unreal.

This really is the best version period! Marko is my favorite male vocalist. Floor is my favorite female but this performance can't be duplicated.

Tarja, Marko and Tomas founder members of Nightwish and built the band around Tarja sound.
Once they gave Tarja the infamous letter and parted company after that performance. Annette sang with the band until she became pregnant and left the band after not so long .
Now up to date with them hiring Floor but Marko has now left the band and occasionally sings again with the goddess that is Tarja in fact they performed phantom of the opera together for the first time in 18 years.

Intensity on stage, and in the audience. The lads were upset because this was the night before they gave Tarja the open letter of dismissal from Nightwish. They knew it - she didn't. The drummer, (Jukka) ,suffering from chronic insomnia, had a migraine (how the hell do you drum like that with a headache, never mind a migraine?); Tuomas, the keyboardist, was not feeling well, and was going through emotional turmoil because of the necessary decision to let Tarja go. They all had emotional chaos going on. The pros they all are, they not only got through the concert, but delivered major performances. Love 'em - then, and now, and always.
I really like both Tarja and Floor (with a personal preference for Floor). However you are correct - they are both incredible. I used to say that Tarja was like an operatic knife - her vocals just cut through you. Floor is like a Swiss Army knife. Floor is capable of doing everything well. Floor does the Phantom very well too. I think the main thing I must say is I wish Floor and Marko would have done this together. Marko just makes everything better. He blends so well with both Floor and Tarja. He's like this Metal Spice that just enhances them. Oh BTW with Tarja I used to say she was a specialist - I only heard he sing operatic for the most part. However, after she left Nightwish she re-trained her voice and can now sing easily in multiple genres and sounds wonderful in all of them (and still and Operatic Metal Goddess).
