Your problem is that you're not lifing straight up. Had you used double pulleys up in the rafters so that the rope went from your hands, to pulley in the rafters, down to pulley on top of 6m roof, up to pulley, horisontally to next pulley, down to 6m roof, up to pulley and so on... then you'd be lifting vertically all the time. With the angles you had it would become harder and harder to lift as it rise up because the angles changes towards horisontal. Don't ask me about the maths, I don't have a clue about that. Generally when using pulleys, measure how many times longer the rope will be pulled than the lift distance. That should show you how much of an advantage you have. Watching you under that roof makes my knees hurt! Get some Knee protectors! (Was at the hospital to get them X-rayed today. I have 'full travel', but stairs are not my friend)
I don’t think you were ‘rove to advantage’. I’m no expert you need someone who sails to look at what you were doing to get a mechanical advantage. I think there was some but not what you wanted.
I admire your persistence. Living with chronic pain and chronic fatigue from a spinal cord injury, I can sympathize with your plight of chronic issues. You're doing a great job.
Carl - First off, major props on how you are dealing with your autoimmune disease. Great strength of character on your part and best wishes that they find a permanent cure for you. Secondly, your pulley system was not giving you the mechanical advantage of a 6 to 1 system. You had a 1 to 1 system and all you were doing was spreading out the lifting points. In order to have a 6 to 1 system, you would have had to have 6 up and downs at each lifting point on the roof. With only 1 up and down at each lifting point, you had a 1 to 1 system. Think of the mainsheet control on a sailing boat with a 6 to 1 system. You have a 3-pulley block on the end of the boom and another 3-pulley block attached to the boat. So, for your system to be 6 to 1, you would have needed a 3-pulley block at each cabin roof attachment point and another 3-pulley block at each overhead roof beam attachment point. In the end you adapted and overcame by using the Land Rover.
I am 76 and your description of difficulty being able to perform tasks is how I feel at this age. I regret that you are experiencing these difficulties at your age. I admire your determination and commitment to your project.
Sorry Carl, wish I could buy a chore jacket - they look amazing! I love watching your build. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. As with many people commenting (sort of a surprising number of us here!) I had a terrible case of rheumatoid arthritis. The fatigue and pain of autoimmune diseases is really taxing. I tried to keep on top of the pain with meds which really helps with fatigue. I also tried many different medications to keep it under control. My daughters were 1 and 4 years old at the time. A physician friend suggested that a good attitude can work wonders... I tried to keep my spirits up. Miraculously, after two very tough years I went into complete remission. I'm sure the meds were the biggest factor, but I tried to keep my sense of humour intact. Carl, your build is absolutely amazing and shows your great attitude. I'm really happy to hear your new meds are working. Try not to give up hope for good health. Take care and I look forward to the next post when you can handle it. Hugs! P.S. Hot wax baths (see a physical therapist) and thick oven-mitt type gloves applied over your hands with wax still on your hands can help relieve painful hands.
You're an inspiration. I also work mostly alone and have to think of ways to do things, when the going gets tough. I know how debilitating a back pain can be, from lifting too heavy stuff, when I was young. Now, at 69, I pay the bill, it seems. So when I saw your lifting apparatus, I felt thrilled. How cool was that! Thanks for showing us all your brilliant ideas and your skilled work. Also for showing, when something goes wrong.
At 46, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. Now at 70, with better medical knowledge & treatments, it's still too late for me. Can I take enough pain killers for the incessant pain to be tolerable, of course. What YOU can do at your age, everything! Everything that is available to help you slow the damage to your body, is what you need to do. It's not all about controlling the pain & discomfort, even though that is all I had available to me, you can do more. Now that medicine has advanced greatly, you can do so much more to give yourself more time that you can live your life on your terms by slowing the damage that your disorder is capable of doing. You have some amazing skills Carl and as I watch you, I see the ones that are just a bit harder to pull off. Pain killers can cause other problems... No not addiction! Most people do not understand just how much pain you endure everyday. When you take pain meds, they are not miracles-of-medicine!!! They are little "gifts" that allow you to do the hard stuff. Be cautious Carl, let the new drugs slow the damage without causes more by doing too much of the hard stuff. I'm so grateful you have your dad, you need all the help you can get. Some days more than others! True? I want to watch you use your skill for as long as possible! Be well Carl and keep up the fight, Mrs. T
My other half is on the same drug for psoriatic arthritis. For her it was a game changer. At least now we can enjoy life together a little more. Good luck with it Carl.
Film the Land Rover repair. I'd watch that too. I just love your presentation style - it's relaxing and I particularly enjoy your attention to detail. I don't think your original pulley system worked because to gain the leverage you're supposed to block them together. But it was a perfect excuse to use the Landy so hey ho. 🙂
Love your channel. Know exactly what you’re going through with chronic pain, I was diagnosed 28 years ago. Your channel inspires me to get up off my derrière and get on with things. Although, at the moment, I wish I had one less leg to deal with. Tomorrow is another day. Have a restful merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.❤🎄🎄
Thanks for the enjoyable content. Thanks also on your health update. My deceased wife had autoimmune disease problems which complicated her other health issues. I hope this medicine works well for you for a long time. Keep up the good work!
Hi Carl i got my Coto jacket today and absolutely love it already. The quality and design is first class, the weight of the cotton is spot on and it fits perfectly. I might have to buy it in Royal blue aswell!
Thanks for all of the wonderful videos that you have shared. I’ve found them to be both educational and entertaining. The jacket looks great on your dad. I ordered the navy jacket and it should be arriving here any day now. I will try to contribute more towards your journey in the new year. Prayers for you and yours, and have a very Merry Christmas!
I had severe hip and lower back issues for a lifetime. Umbilical chord around neck and leg, born premature. Years of chiropractic adjustments. Couldn't balance, jump rope, ride a bicycle due to hip out of place. Finally couldn't sit down or stand up without severe pain, until ONE trigger point session solved the problem. I could immediately squat to my hips when my feet were at to 10 and 2 position, over and over, in my seventies. Still can't balance however. Maybe this information could help you. Your videos or wonderful.
Got my Chore Jacket the other day, Tried it on for size, perfect fit! I am just not allowed to wear it until xmas day unfortunately. But I have to say it is perfect. Loving this channel!
Welcome to pain. I have ankylosing spondylitis which is almost the same thing. I take a shot every 2 months as well. Good luck. BTW good job building this camper per say!
Dude, I love your content. I love how exacting you are with all the processes that you go through. I spoke with you previously about your bracelet or one of your friends bracelets. But the new project you have going on is really interesting. There’s so many details you have to work through. So many measurements in curvatures. I wish you the best and the rest of your project. And your auto immune situation. Cheers
For the pulley to work, you would need to have a compound pulley at each end of one attached to the weight and one you pull from and it would need to be attached to something stationary. A single rope is fine how you have lifting, but to lower the amount of force needed to lift you would need to tie that rope to a 3 to 4 compound pulley with the other end attached to the ceiling and then you would be able to use 20 pounds of force to raise the roof
Congrats on getting on the adalimumab, doesn't work for everyone but it got rid of 95% of the back and hip pain from my AS. Hope it works for you! The shepherds hut is looking great so far.
Glad you found a new med to help. Sorry it has to be an injection. (having been on insulin for a short period, I understand where you are at) Got my jacket two weeks ago. I love it. I've even worn it around the house a fair bit.
Been watching your videos from you and your dad fixing up the old barn to now.cant wait till you get this carriage done or whatever its called.good luck merry christmas.
Obviously when working alone you have to come up with solutions and I’m sure you figured this out by now, but the angle of the ropes going through those pulleys is what is reducing the lifting capacity. As you change the force vector away from linear to a more obtuse angle you reduce lifting capacity. Delbert Hall has a very good section in Rigging Math Made Simple covering pulley math for anyone interested.
Great quick thinking on clamping the board to the roof! I feel ya' on the autoimmune disease. I have had 2 unrelated surgeries this year and, along with the rheumatoid arthritis, the whole year has been spent trying to accommodate health stuff and I feel like I haven't gotten much of anything accomplished.
Looking really good! Also, I am glad for you that you got meds to ease things for you, even if it is temporary. Keep fighting and making glorious videos! :)
Respect to youbuddy battling through pain ,I started getting chronic arthritis in my 30s and had hip replacement age 39 which when your a landscaper is tough so I understand a bit what you go through. I’m 50 now and all my joints are nackered ,but chin up and shoulders back we carry on ❤Love your videos
Merry Christmas to you and your family. I always enjoy watching your videos and wish I had the talent (and the patience) to try something like what you have completed beautifully.
A real inspiration, all that you do, and how you go about it. Especially now knowing the kind of physical challenge you also have to deal with. Keep up the excellent work lad. You make a difference for a lot of us out here.
Good luck Carl on the Adalimumab, I hope it works well for you. Look out for any side effects and stay healthy. It wasn't so good for me and as I am sure you know anti tnf is a big step for the immune system so stay aware. Great build by the way. !!!!!
Film the landrover repair. I'd like to see you videotaping everything in your life whether working hard or just your thoughts while sitting in front of a fire. Take us along on your drives to see what all of your world is like. Thank you from someone with chronic health problems and old age. More videos means more money for you.
Making touch with financial advisors like Ann Marie strunk who can assist you restructure your portfolio, would be a very creative option. Personal financial management will be crucial to navigating the next difficult times.
Ann Marie strunk has really set the standard for others to follow, we love her here in the Uk 🇬🇧 as she has been really helpful and changed lots of life's.
Please take your time, and go and make a nice cup of time when you are filling unwell. Have a great Xmas thanks for all your videos this Year. Great Work.
Yeah, buddy. Chronic pain sux. Not so bad when you can ignore it but it sure gets your attention when it flairs up. Worse part about it is the way it slows one down when projects need to get done. Much respect to you for pushing through.
Carl, Aside from the shepard's wagon, which is moving along nicely, I know your pain. I have three crushed , or nearly crushed discs at the very bottom of my spine. It shows up as pain in my hips and it can be excruciating at times. I really hope your new meds work for you.
Been on the Adulimumab for years, it's good stuff. Keeps me active and walking when I would otherwise be pretty crippled up. Watch yourself around anyone with colds, flu or Covid though.. Those kind of things will hit you twice as hard now you're suppressed. Any infection can linger. 🙂😒
I recognize the injectors. I have also an auto-immune desease, Psoriasis. Used before Humira (also adalimumab) and now i use Stelara (ustekinumab). From total body infected to only some smaller pieces on my underlegs. Hope is wil be as effective as it is for me!
I'm curious to how you're going to move the Shepherd's Hut to Spain. I would think in pieces and on a carrier. I hope I'm not being dense, if that is the plan. Maybe you could highlight this in later videos for the lay person. Thanks and I love your channel. I've watches all of your videos more than once and they all hold up. I do remember after the staircase you had a notice of "soon" on a door, I was assuming it was the kitchen to your families home. Anyway, take care, be well and thanks for sharing your journey.
If you want to put the screws in along the edge, there exists a right-angle attachment for drills (Milwaukee makes one in the USA, not sure what brands you would have there). I have used mine to great success in the same sort of situations.
Carl, at your young age, I really admire your knowledge and craftmanship, Young man you may have some health issues, but any company would love for you to supervise reconstruction jobs, such as old Mansions Churches, whatever the job you have the know-how, Merry Christmas Carl be safe and healthy as possible
Loving seeing the progress with this and can't wait to see the finished thing! Thank you for including the segment about your health - as someone who lives with Crohn's disease, I'm all too aware of how these "invisible illnesses" can affect people. Great to hear that your new meds are helping you mate :) Best of luck going forward 👍
Cael, you were thinkin' too hard on this one. One floor joist with a 2 x 4 or 4 x 4 prop at each end would have been plenty strong. A couple el-cheapo come-a-longs, you'd be swinging free. No rope. No pulleys. No drill holes or eye bolts.
Two things I would point out , you can buy a 90 degree adapter for your drill to put screws in, secondly, I wouldn't of countersink those screw, I would of use cups and screws you can get brass cups or nickel plated cups . Have you considered lighting in your roof , if install in that roof do the prep work now. But your doing a good job
strange thing is: that he used on angle drill to drill the holes ruclips.net/video/3oHfQ9Vb0G0/видео.html so i don't see why he couldn't use a bit in it. It seems a bit too obvious that I suspect that we are overlooking something.
@@Girts_164 I might be pretty old but you can drive screws just fine with a drill. Some people still prefer it over an impact. For repeating work like this you can just set the clutch and drive them all in without constantly feathering the trigger.
For chronic autoimmune disorders I can personally recommend a non-processed, clean, meat free diet, (but can include non-farmed fish) plus copious amounts of yogurt. It calms leaky gut. and reduces the flares.
So many times we never know about health issues that others may have. The fact that you showed you issues actually helps other with the same or similar issues. That in itself way a courageous thing to do. And I been watching you on this project. Interesting situations to see... Thumbs Up!
Hi Carl. Been following you for the last 4 years and it has been a joy. Love your calm, clear cideos. nothing fancy just straight to the point, explaining what you do and how in a very nice way. So, looking forward to much more in the next year. Wishing you and your family a really Merry Christmas and a Very Good 2025. All the best. Maud 😊🧑🎄⛄🎄
Carl, thank you for sharing your health experiences. Grateful the medication change is managing your condition better, your optimism is much the same as your videos, this project, and skillset. Outstanding!
Especially since you work on your own much of the time, you might consider getting a remote controlled electric winch, either on your vehicle, or a portable one. It makes lots of one man jobs that much easier to do without straining yourself.
Carl, you clever, foward- thinking, straight-talking, stronger than you feel young man.go for the gold and count your hiccups as mini seminars in building a shepherd''s caravan from the ground up. BTW, how are you going to pull the beastie when you've finished (loosely defined)? ❤🎉😊
Guys, did the pulleys not give me any mechanical advantage....?
ps. Last chance to buy a chore jacket for Xmas! www.cotoworks.com

(Was at the hospital to get them X-rayed today. I have 'full travel', but stairs are not my friend)
6-1 advantage means 6 pulleys to 1 pick point.
@@shawnholton5182 You can use several pulleys, but they MUST be set up in such a way that the rope must be pulled at least 6x the lifting distance.
You need to have the pulleys close together and to one attachment point. This was just the same weight and six attachment points so no help at all

Hi Carl i got my Coto jacket today and absolutely love it already.
The quality and design is first class, the weight of the cotton is spot on and it fits perfectly.
I might have to buy it in Royal blue aswell!
Best wishes with your health. You are a boss for doing this kind of hard work with that condition.
Deine super Videos werden durch die übersetzten Audiotracks für mich noch interessanter. Ich wünsche schon jetzt ein frohes Weihnachtsfest.

Merry Christmas Carl, thanks for the videos and happy to hear your new meds are helping!

I have an old plugin right angle screwdriver that I hardly ever use, but it has saved the day a number of times..
Please take your time, and go and make a nice cup of time when you are filling unwell. Have a great Xmas thanks for all your videos this Year. Great Work.

GENUS ...luv from Noosa...have a happy restful Christmas
Merry Christmas to you and your family.

A very effective tool for cutting synthetic rope is an angle grinder with a cut-off wheel . The ends get heat sealed by the speed of the disk.
My vote for the next jacket colour is a nice army green
Merry Christmas to you and yours! - )
Hey, love the progress, sorry you have to deal with the pain ❤️🩹
Feel for you Carl. You want to crack on but your body says no.
Btw, get a right angle end for your screwdriver, not perfect but will certainly help.
I'm glad the biologics are working they are a game changer
I've got Ankylosing spondylitis
I am not even worthy to pick up this mans trash 😊 Highly impressive, just about everything. 🙏🙏
@@crapiecorn That angle drill probably doesn't have impact function.
@@Girts_164 I might be pretty old but you can drive screws just fine with a drill. Some people still prefer it over an impact. For repeating work like this you can just set the clutch and drive them all in without constantly feathering the trigger.

Hope you and your family have an excellent Christmas Carl and I’ll look out for the next installment of this build in the New Year 👍
Another cracking vid Carl! Also why is it every opinel ends up losing its point? I must have had(and lost) 4 of them and every one lost its tip.
Great video. Your rope and pulley idea / calculation is correct but the ropes have to go straight up and down, ie. extra pulleys….
Thumbs Up!
larger diameter pulleys, maybe just one big a** one, and a rope with Way less spring to it, just my experience. love the videos and the quality build!
Great video, loving this build. Hope your hips are ok, it sounds really painful.
I hope you keep feeling better, merry christmas to you too Carl!!
Merry Christmas to you and your family and I hope you continue to feel better.
Especially since you work on your own much of the time, you might consider getting a remote controlled electric winch, either on your vehicle, or a portable one. It makes lots of one man jobs that much easier to do without straining yourself.
Merry Christmas to all 🙏🙂
Carl, you clever, foward- thinking, straight-talking, stronger than you feel young man.go for the gold and count your hiccups as mini seminars in building a shepherd''s caravan from the ground up. BTW, how are you going to pull the beastie when you've finished (loosely defined)? ❤🎉😊
This is wath RUclips is made for!
18 V caulk gun. Never going back to the old handpowered ones
