Got a call from a family in Nutley NJ wanting to sell their family owned 1970 Semi Auto Bug. This bug was bought new in 1970 from this family's mom, ( I have the 1970 title). She was 85 years old and still driving this lil bugger and backing it into her driveway every time she came home. A cool find with a lot of family history. She has never been painted or restored, just maintained. It sat for over 20 years without being run, we attempt to change all that here in this video. I hope you enjoy it! =)
My mom still has her super-beetle she bought brand new in 1974 she is original one owner and it runs and drives and is robins egg blue all original great condition !
I have a 1970 type 1, manual, same original color white with red interior. Seeing this is like watching my own car come to life! I hope you continue with a few more videos of this one :)
Picked up a 71 super for my wife like 12 years ago,it was from Arizona in a guys collection. Its got a mild Cali look woth t-bars and tear drop taillights,it is as solid as day one. It was painted white at Macco, for $600, back in the 90s,being in the resto biz,i gotta say its not awful! Inside and out for $600 ,I pay that for a gallon of clear and hardner! Great video!
I’ve got my grandfather’s ‘70 Beetle. Not a spec of rust anywhere, but the red paint has really oxidized and is down to the primer in many places. I also picked up a “basket case” ‘63 Beetle to keep me sufficiency fluent in gratifying profanity in my old age…
hi chris great to see your dad back in action again great find a family owned from new beetle semi auto as well still being used used looks solid good luck with the project
Oh Man. I haven’t seen those yellow NJ tags in years! I remember them growing up. That carb was all kinds of junked up. No wonder it didn’t run. Being an east coast car, I’m surprised it isn’t rusted up. Glad to see your dad is looking well and back to doing his thing.
@@classicvwbugs oh wow. That’s not too bad considering location. Most of the survivors around here are beat and rusted. Maybe a good cleaning and a wax? But I can see the dents being an issue. Nice red interior.
That 70 bug lucked out going to receive a 2nd lease on life after Chris gets done with it. Are you guys going to keep updating us. Chris by the way those fire wall tar boards are so awesome. Makes my engine compartment stand out thank you !!
Wow! That 30 Pic-3 was plugged up! That's why we drive our bugs. If you let them sit too long they feel neglected and get temperamental. Taking the carb off was the right thing to do. :) I was sitting here watching, and telling the screen, "Take off the carburetor! " :D I'm enjoying your content!
We just finished a full restoration on a one-owner 1969 that sat for 15 years (Rupert). It was in a little worse shape due to all floor pans having rotted. We evicted 59 mice from the insides of the seats, and lots of wiring challenges! Your videos taught us so much. I hope you will show us periodic progress videos on this one, I am sure we'll all learn a thing or two!
@@classicvwbugs I'll tell ya one of the Craziest things I have ever found in one. 15 years ago I picked up a 60's VW and while taking it apart, I took out the back seat, and under there I found a small sandwich bag with a few Marijuana crumbs and a pack of 1.5 papers with like 3 or 4 papers left in it..and beside that, a few old playboy magazines from the 70s and some old beer cans from that era too..just crazy what you can find in old cars, no telling just how long that stuff was under there😅
@@classicvwbugs Awe man..it was like a time capsule under there! There were a few other things under there but I forget..and the ladies were lovely...for the time I guess😆👍 I was wondering if it was like some teenagers hiding spot or something, but dad sold it without telling him,or something like that..idk🤔😁
Been playing with VWs since before that car was new and I have to say I have never seen a frozen engine unless the carb got rain water in it. They always start after a little prodding!
Glad to see you are embracing the seventies Beetle’s which will never be cute like pre 66 but boast German engineers modernizing Ferdinand Porsche’s 1934 design, good video Chris
Great video, Chris. Nice to see a later bug getting some love at the Vallone workshop. Late cars can still be cool. As they’re getting older, these late 60s/early 70s bugs will come into their own. Nice here in the UK we kept lowback seats, metal dash’s and smaller taillights well into the 70s
@@classicvwbugs I hope so because I have a 1 owner Savannah beige 68 and my first car, and orange 70, 1200 European model parked in my garage, as well as a 56 oval - I need a bigger house!! 😭
Love the originality; down to the factory white numbering on the fan housing. The old school hammer on the starter solenoid trick! Gotta love it! And the cloud of smoke was epic!! 🤣😂
Hi Chris I'm super glad to see you back with another great video. This one in particular because I bought last year a 1970 beetle. Unfortunately is not a barn find and many owners. Needs alot of work but I'm very anxious to at least get it running in the upcoming months.. Thanks for sharing the video. 👍
Chris Vallone ......my 1600cc sand rail engine is leaking oil out of the exhaust on the drivers side and it has been backfiring out of that side only ...what does that sound like it is to you?
Kenneth ... the trans itself was rarely the issue as long as the oil didn't leak out. Most common issues where the switch in the shifter and the vacuum components that allowed you to shift gears.... and of course the vac leaks that made the engine run bad.
Cool find. I have the exact same car 1970 except i still have the reflectors on the rear bumper; and mine has euro style tails with the amber turn signals. Im curious as the cure for the black smike? Rings? or just drive it awhile and the smoke my clear up?
@@osso12 Could be rings, you won't know till you drive it more. But most of that stuff coming out of the muffler was rust inside the muffler getting blown out.
The autostick parts are no longer available the best thing is to convert it to a 4 speed manual. I had a 70 bug once had many flexplates fail and a bad torque converter bushing before the car was converted to a 4 speed. the frame tunnel rusted on it and i no longer have the car.
I would love to find an unmolested one like this for a daily driver. I'd just clean it up, get everything working again, and put some USED running boards on it!
