Watching movie buffs discover The usual suspects is my new favorite thing. We get to re-live that experience just a little bit that way. Great watch! Subbed!
Ayyy happy to have you along the ride!!
My favourite t shirt, until it wore out, was one that had the Kobayashi Porcelain logo on it!
I love that Gabriel Byrne (keaton) thought his character WAS Kaiser soze... and played him that way lol. He was as surprised as everyone when at the premiere it was Kevin Spacey
One of my favorite movies
One of the great things in life is getting to show this movie to someone who has never seen it
Can’t wait to honestly show my mom this movie
yes i have shown it to multiple people and their reaction is always priceless, this is why this film is in my top 5 favorite films of all time
Yups lok
@@JamesVSCinema please watch Mulholland Drive unless you've already seen it
I totally agree. I’ve shown this movie to my brother, my dad, and multiple friends over the years, and I usually spend more time watching their reactions than the actual movie itself.
The director, SInger convinced all the cast member that they were Soze. They didn't find out who was really Soze until Singer screened to final cut for them. Gabriel Byrne, who played Keaton, was so pissed that he wasn't Soze that he stormed out of the screening room and then argued with Singer in the parking lot for about half an hour about why he should be Soze.
Okay, this tidbid i didn't know. Nice!
I guess Gabriel Byrne thought he was the big star in it with so many of the others being new to big films. Funny thing is this was the last movie I remember seeing with him as the "star." Just about everybody else's career jumped by leaps and bounds since this came out. Even Baldwin's for a while.
Hahaha if i were Singer ida so done it like that just to piss off the cast. 😂😂😂
I never heard of it. I knew Del Toro was mumbling like that because he knew his character will die. But why would he think he will die if he's Keyser Soze?
@@HajduDIGITAL Del Toro wasn't mumbling because he knew his character would die. Why do you think otherwise? He has never said this.
Now just imagine this twist 25 years ago when twist endings weren’t common or expected. Nowadays, we expect twists at every turn and are looking for them. But back then, NO ONE saw this coming. A masterpiece
Exactly right. This movie really set the precedent for amazing twist endings and every movie since is chasing the same effect.
Also, Kevin Spacey wasn't a well-known actor when this film came out either, so most people wouldn't have thought it was him.
Yep. I saw this as a teenager when it came out and the ending blew my head off.
Im still too oblivious to look for twists, but i like being not critical much better.
@@stoptellingmetolikecomment1624 , Alfred Hitchcock, was known for twist endings long before this, however this is a masterpiece of the art.
Nowadays people can sometimes tell the twist because it's Kevin Spacey, but back then he was unknown so it blew people's minds.
Funny enough it works now on the younger generation because they don’t know who Spacey is.
@@Rurukuken and thats his fault lol
@@trumanbadra8003 Sure is!
You just have to start by selling to the film to them as one of the ones Kevin Spacey and Benicio Del Toro did before they were famous :)
Verbal is not Soze. There are countless reasons why I thought Kobayashi is Soze but one true giveaway is the moment in the pool room when he first appears to the 5 suspects. Just as Keaton utters the words "someone with power..." they cut to a shot of Kobayashi calmly standing in the shadows having entered unnoticed by these career criminals. And then it happens again during the finale as we see and hear the montage of clues as Kint is walking down the street. When the phrase "someone with power" is played again the Jaguar with Kobayashi appears behind him. So subtle and sly. Bonus, we never know his real name as Kobayashi is the name Kint gave him from the coffee mug. And he was present at every key moment of manipulation of the suspects.
Me, wrapped up in my blanket: "Keyser Sözeeee!!!"
LMFAOOO
This is the pinnacle of making the most out of a nothing role. Del Toro stealing scenes out there.
Everyone was an awesome cast!
Yep. Spacey in this and Se7en in the same year. Crazy
It was actually Del Toro's idea to have his character's speech be mumbled. He said that after reading the script, and realizing his character doesn't actually say anything of note, he asked the director if he could speak in a slightly inaudible way through it, seeing as how all the character's all around him end up adding or reiterating what he just said anyways. It was pretty incredible for an actor to just not want that much attention put on their character, ironically it just made us all sit up even more when he would speak. Brad Pitt was so taken by his performance, hopefully I'm remembering the trivia bit correctly, he called up Del Toro and asked him for permission to do the same with one of his own character's, and that's what we got from Brad in the movie Snatch.
@XmenMagnetoAcolytes And introduced the films biggest mystery in my opinion.....could they hear Del Toros character in the back?
@@stevetoth7136 I think they were more worried about him possibly flipping them for real
Pete Postlethwaite being low-key awesome in every film of the 90's
Today the SJWs would go crazy that he’s not Japanese (or wherever he’s meant to be from - assuming because of Kobayashi)... that shit didn’t matter back then, and shouldn’t matter today. A great actor!
@@adamski6312 Stop with this "This wouldn't fly nowadays!" shit. It would fly just fine because Kobayashi is never even described as Japanese, and it isn't even made clear if it's his real name or just an alias. He is literally a character patched together by Verbal out of random bits of information. An unambiguously Japanese name, a pseudo Indian accent, and Pete Postlethwaite is literally neither. You never hear him speak at the end, so there's no indication that the character you see there is actually the same one, or just happens to be a real person who works for/with Verbal that he attached these made up traits to.
Anti-SJW sentiment manages to invent 100x more reasons to be annoyed by imagined outrage than SJWs ever do.
I like the theory that he is the real Keyser Soze, not Verbal

still one of my favourite "unreliable narrator" movies out there. the script, the acting, the camera work and editing - that's how you lead your viewer where you want him. and yeah, spacey's characters in seven and here are iconic villians
Heavily agree Valeriya!
I feel like the risk of having the narrator straight up making shit up is that if you predict the twist, or are rewatching, it can just feel like pointless bullshit. But the storytelling here is so captivating that it's always a joy to watch.
My headcanon is that the whole story is more or less true, but Verbal changed up all the names so he couldn’t follow up on it.
@@schmuck.on.wheels Especially the second time, because, as you know the true story by then, it's even more fun seeing the clues and hints throughout.
The whole unreliable narrarator thing is the reason why I don't trust red's version of events in shawano redemption
“Him scanning the wall in the room”
The reveal of the bottom of the coffee mug is such an amazing shot, it really seals the entire movie. It's amazing how a zoom in on a coffee mug can radically alter everything you thought you knew in the movie.
One of the best endings ever
Right!? Hahaha what a moment!
Definitely a great ending. Sometimes I wonder if the movie could have worked with a different resolution.
Absolutely.
James watching a 25 year old movie: "Woooah everybody is young here!" That's kinda how time works. ;)
Hahaha it’s still so mindblowing lol. It’s like when you see your grandpa young in a photo and they look completely different
I sometimes think it must be weird for younger people with modern photo and film technology, they're gonna have this super sharp footage of their parents and grandparents as young people and kids. Only photos I've got are black and white, or the colours washed out and quite fuzzy. I wonder if they'll feel a greater connection with them seeing them so clearly.
@@JamesVSCinema I love Benicio's Finster character, he came up with it himself , I mean the way he speaks and moves, and he's absolutely a scene stealer every single one he's in, just hilarious. The cast was dumbfounded first time they saw it and couldn't understand a word he said. The director asked him if he seriously intended to play him like that the whole movie and del Toro said he would and that was that, an iconic character born. The lineup scene in the movie is so great and famous and it took them a day to shoot it, as every take someone would start cracking up saying the line and originally that wasn't in the script. In the end they gave up and just took this take and it works beautifully of course.
There are those who claim that this movie didn't surprise them b/c they suspected Verbal to be Keyser the whole time. Yet you deduced the same thing and was still surprised due to the fact that the ending had more than just one revelation. I don't think anyone ever expected the details of the story to be based on the bulletin board.
I love how the sergeant says the guy is protected from on high by prince of darkness, then later we get the “greatest trick the devil ever pulled”, line. Such brilliant writing.
"Convince me..." Played. Like. A. Fiddle.
"I'm smarter than you!" one of the best lines.
Verbal: As you wish....
Christopher McQuarrie won an Oscar for this original screenplay. This film won over Braveheart and Toy Story, among others.
Braveheart screenplay was lame.
If you get James to stand up during a reaction, you know it's a top tier twist.
Such a SATISFYING ending. For real. I remember seeing this in the theater. My husband was so confused by the end he said "so, the guy interrogating Verbal was Kaiser...?" I laughed so hard "What the f*** movie were you watching?!" I remember laughing. oh man, good times.

It's ok to type English on the internet.
This Movie is probably a standing template for modeling a story around "subverting expectations". Now, I'm no successful author or screenwriter by any means, but I recognize good stories and clever plot devices when I see them.
You are correct on that regard!
Fun fact: they were all laughing because he farted
Oh that’s good stuff hahaha
@@JamesVSCinema yeah. One of the first scenes they filmed and had all come to film right after lunch. Plus the 'Read the card again… In English' line from the director was all improvised too.
Since we now all know you haven’t seen Breaking Bad, you should really consider reacting to it 😊
@@NifferGal Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are cinematography porn. The amount of subtext they put in shots is insane.
True story. They were filming this as prep for "the real shoot" and they were all giddy and cutting up (but staying in character). Singer was wise enough to see that it was better than if they played the lineup scene "straight" and "hard-ass", so he kept it for the final cut. One of the best "happy accidents" in film history.
Dude how the fuck are you so good at analyzing the plots of film? No one I've ever known to have seen this film nailed the Kaiser Soze twist. You are truly gifted my friend
"That was an interesting shot of him scanning the wall"
Yes it was.
The editor for this movie, John Ottman, is also its composer
That’s awesome!!
His score is the best thing in Superman Returns
the editing of the reveal (especially the sound editing), is next level. amazing job
Damn James. This is the most observant blind watch of Usual Suspects I've seen yet!
Mad props to getting the idea of soze, but he cheated....he waited 25 years after it came out to watch it! Not fair...
@@hawks7775 True enough, and that helps -- but also, James was paying super-close attention to where we're getting information from, and what we can count on being true. He's a far more observant viewer than I ever was!!
As much as spacey’s actions revolt me you can’t deny his genius, American beauty will always be one of my favourite films and his performance never fails to amaze me. Usual suspects is great as well though. Good insights as ever in this video.
Appreciate that my friend! I’m with you on your statement on Kevin Spacey as well!
Good acting is good acting, the characters he plays are amazing, himself, not so much.
Let’s not forget the director too... but hey you can be a disgusting perv as long as you got talent, right? As long as they personally entertain you.
True. I was rewatching LA Confidential fairly recently, and it was kind of tough to watch Spacey but as the film progressed, I have to admit I enjoyed his performance
@@JamesVSCinema L.A. Confidential NEEDS to be a future reaction if u haven't seen it already
The fact you called it so early in the movie is impressive. I was completely shocked by that ending, did NOT see it coming.
Back when Kevin Spacey was just starting to be recognized as an actor, I think The Usual Suspects came out either right before or right after Seven. Imagine being in two amazing films back to back with such crazy twists!
Seeing people's reaction to the big twist never gets old.
Amazing how you picked up on all of those clues so early in the movie. Incredible insight and film analysis. Always enjoy your reactions.
Part of his insight, I think, comes from the film being twenty-five years old. Even seeing it now, a lot of this has become meme worthy and has shown up in other things by this point. I've never seen the Crying Game, but somewhere along the way I've picked up how it basically ends. That being said, I still enjoyed his analysis of the movie.
There have been many rip-offs over 25 years using this formula. Watching it today for the first time makes for easier pickups on subtle clues.
@@Rasmusdud He should be in film then because that was some genuine looking emotions up until the end confirming what he suspected.
I love reliving that "big reveal" at the end in reaction videos. This film is true crime noir where the dialogue between characters solves the mystery alongside the clues.
Best last line of the movie. "And like that... he's gone." Gives me chills every time. And it's so fun to rewatch because then you see just how good he is at fooling everyone and making up that story. SO good.
The camera angles in this movie are indeed excellent. I dig how you specifically liked the overhead view of the coffee mug as it foreshadowed the Kobayashi reveal at the end.
You've got a good channel, man.
Your reaction towards the end is golden. That was pretty much my own reaction as well when saw this as a Sneak Peak flick.
By far one of my favorite story driven films.
I was bamboozled 😂
@@JamesVSCinema That is the perfect word for it :)
The reason they were laughing so much during the lineup (and pissing Singer off) was because Benicio kept farting. You can see Gabriel Byrne trying to hide the fact that hes plugging his nose. It was a small room lol
5:50 In detective Kujan’s speech to Verbal about putting guys in a cell and whoever is laying down is guilty, notice who was laying down the whole time, and that he is later revealed to have actually stolen the truck.
I love the little attentions to detail this movie has. Also the cigarette scene was real. Alex Baldwin really got hit in the eye but signed the director to keep going
This is beyond incredible. Thanks for sharing that tad bit with me!
Stephen Baldwin, not Alex. And you're probably thinking of Alec. But yes, that was a real cigarette butt to the eye!
@@richieclean ah yes sorry lol I mixed up my Baldwins!
Speaking of cigarettes, another thing that makes Verbal stand out is that he holds his cigarettes European style in a few scenes (9:48 for example.) It's exceptionally rare for an American smoker to hold one like that (I've never personally come across any who do.)
I remember watching this when it came out. We sat down for the 9 PM screening, having no idea what we're were going to see.
Ten minutes in I was gripping the armrets.
When it ended, I SERIOUSLY considered getting a ticket for the 11 PM screening to watch it again right away.
What really amazes me about this movie is the fact that when the realization hits you who Keyser is,you feel everything Agent Cullian feels. The urgency, the realization, etc. Verbal not only make him feel like he got played, but you the viewer feel like you got played too. And it's only after you watch it the second time do you see the signs and clues you previously overlooked that Verbal was Keyser.
Dude, You are so smart. I saw that movie 20 years ago and I was all twisted up by the ending.
Honestly it’s because I had the leverage of filmmaking and used that t my advantage hahaha!
Saw it in on release, knew 5 mins into the movie it was Spacey, unfortunately it was because a mate of mine, when he heard i was going to see it, said "it's the guy with the limp".. that was all.. no context. I still enjoyed it mind you, mainly because I thought "nah, it can't be". We're still friends.. but I haven't forgotten :)
@@oliverdoherty It's because we have seen so many similar twisty films.
@@vb8428 Yea, there wasn't many then. A small few older classics. With '99 and getting classics like "the 6th sense," "fight club,"etc. Your head goes to that place.
I would argue, it's a cliche now in two aspects. 1. It's Kevin Spacey. Come on. He's a known serious actor. Back then, he wasn't. 2. It's more "obvious" now for a variety of reasons.
Mostly because nowadays, you expect the least expected person to be "that" person. That .. wasn't the case 25 years ago.
Also, like he said, he knows filmmaking. He noticed certain things in angles and shots that were meant for foreshadowing and he saw through that foreshadowing when you're not really "supposed" to see through the foreshadowing until you see the end or rewatch the movie.
part of the joy of this movie in particular is watching someone get to the end for the first time. I watched this movie in the theaters when it came out and it absolutely floored me. Never forgot it. Completely earned that Oscar.
Best reaction to this movie by far. You had a gut feeling right away, then major doubt. They twisted it making you thought you were wrong.. then the ending. Very entertaining.
Exactly!! Hahaha made me doubt even my gut feeling which is extremely hard to do! Bravo to this film!
@@JamesVSCinema yes great work pushing you in one direction then a big reveal. In these times such simple reactions, yet shock is greatly appreciated. Very, very entertaining. Thank you
Got to back it up saying, your gut is correct. Honestly I was annoyed you caught one so quick. But that's your study and craft. From an outside perspective that is fantastic, you feel the vibe but aren't sertain. I never knew how a film could effect others by pushing and pulling. You my man are a gift at doing so. One of the greatest tricks James VS Cinema ever played, was making RUclips think he had not seen this movie before...
Amazing, really. People are eating it up. A filmmaker that has not seen any of the classic movies of the last 40 years. lol
I got the same "shivers" you got dude.
What a MASTERPIECE.
I love how Kaiser is written. Such is his confidence that he amuses himself toying with cops trying to shake him down, by seeding his story throughout with tell-tale elements stolen from the very room they are interrogating him in. Ultimately adding to his already impressive mythology.
This is the single greatest movie reaction video I have ever seen.
Spacey won the academy award for his role in this movie.
you should see the key and peele skit parodying this movie 😂"the world's worst liar"

Great job figuring it out so early!! The only thing clouding your view was the unreliable narrator gambit. A true film maker like yourself can see things in stories most can't. Great work. Keep it up. Love your vids.
I think that’s what’s fun about this because I was trying to use the filmwork as leverage in figuring out the story..I was still blown away!
"Great job figuring it out so early!!" -- Oh yes, absolutely amazing)))
"Wow that was an interesting shot right there, just him alone scanning the wall...." Ha, can you remember saying that when you watched Verbal sitting there. Like others say, Spacey has done horrible things, but take this movie, Seven, American Beauty, those were great performances 😭

This review was my favorite of yours. The fact that you pointed out so many oddities that I have missed on many viewings, the scene with him in a room, that it is told through his perspective when it shouldn't etc is amazing. the fact that those suspicions have led you to suspect him so early on is fantastic!
You should do parasite review.
It's impossible to make a surprise reveal like this anymore. It's been 25 years since this movie changed how stories would unfold. You can't be surprised like we were in 1996 when we watched this movie fresh, with all the old movie tropes already established. Great reaction. Where can I see some of your films? Please tell me you have some to display. I hope you're not one of those who talk about being a filmmaker but then just goes to school and never does it.

if you like this give The Way of The Gun a spin. Christopher McQuarrie, same writer, also wrote and directed it. Some of the best dialogue I've ever heard.

Just a silly good movie...
Bro! You gotta watch "The Abyss" by James Cameron. I'm telling you.
I'd second that. But the theatrical version is actually better than the extended, in this instance.
I third this. But definitely the extended version. The theatrical ruins the ending.
I think you got it backwards. The extended ruins the ending by spelling it out and hitting you over the head with it to the point of redundancy. Also messes with the pacing. Definitely watch theatrical. It's plenty good and spiring to the imagination.
@@tfpp1 Yeah, avoid the "extended". Funny how often that's the case: the filmmaker or the studio ruin a perfectly good movie by trying to give the audience more.
I recently watched a reactor view the extended version of one of my favorites, and spend the entire video complaining about how long and slow it was. Most of those complaints were during scenes they added later.
It's a good movie, just hate the ending (in any of the versions). It is, since James is a film maker, very much worth while to see the documentary on how they made it, pretty epic undertaking (remember, no cgi involved).

Loved watching you enjoy this gem. I remember watching this when it first came out. I was only 14 years old, but I remember being absolutely floored by the characters, the dialogue, and that ending. At the time, this was my favorite movie.
I got to watch this one on the theater when it came out, and I had no clue what it was about - it was a day where I just wanted to go to the theater without knowing what was one and picked a film at random. It was mind-blowing.
What I like the most about the twist is that, when you think about it, most of the movie you just watched may have been a lie. Some of the things are real because the cops would know about it (the heists, for instance) but all the rest might have been just a complete fabrication, and we have no way to know what really happened. :)
I was skeptical of that from the very beginning because I noticed it was told from one person..Verbal haha
It's borderline impossible to overstate how influential this movie has been.
I mean, twist endings had been around since forever, of course; but this movie slammed the trend into high gear.
It still hasn't been surpassed by anything that came after, when it comes to the impact of the twist, imo.

“Verbal was the imposter”
The camera angles and movements you kept mentioning opened up so much to me. Like the shot out of the coffee mug that ended with a downward angle towards Verbal could've been hinting at him being able to see the bottom of the mug and read Kobayashi. And the scene with Verbal just looking around the room, its just so well-made. I'm very happy that you reacted to this, I saw it for the first time last year or something, but the folks I spend time with aren't interested in movies that ask you to think a little, so there was no one to really hype over how awesome it is.
PLEASE, follow up with The Way of the Gun.
yoooo been ages since i've seen that... due for a rewatch. Would love to see the reaction vid too. Deep cut. Forgotten classic.
Whoa, fantastic suggestion!
Sarah Silverman in the beginning 😂😂😂😂
@@redtailzephier4141 hahahaha oh yeah!! What's that line she gets thrown at her... can't say it here. Classic.
5:40 "Kevin Spacey's character...I forgot his name." I bet you will remember it's really Kaiser Sorze forever now! Very well done on having your suspicions about who Spacey really was only halfway through - it was a surprise for most of us that we didn't see coming. Have you seen him in the equally brilliant 'American Beauty'? Enjoyed 3 of your reactions so far (only because I've only watched 3, not because I didn't like the rest! I'm sure they're all great as I'll see when I catch up) so subscribed. Want to see a film with the same impact of horror as 'Come and See'...but with funny situations and dialogue that will make you feel very confused when you find yourself laughing? It's a monochrome film, shot documentary style, written and starring and directed by one guy and is in Belgian with subtitles but is utterly mesmerising - 'Man Bites Dog'. Also, the heartbreaking comedy set in a concentration camp called 'Life Is Beautiful', which got its writer, director and leading actor 3 Oscars.
React to Chronicle. Unique found-footage movie.
Didn’t know that I’m getting a like already.
Yup, one of my top 10 favorite films of all time. It's a cinematic masterpiece.
Watch Guy Ritchie's "Revoler" next. Trust.
This movie was the OG of the big unexpected reveal. It's one of the absolute landmarks in twist reveals, and the reason viewers today are so jaded in predicting them. This film laid the foundation of what, today, is practically a tired trope. The portion of viewers predicting the twist today is far larger than when it was released. If you're not tuned in on 'predicting the twist', the final scenes in Usual Suspects is mind blowing.
Great reaction. Moar please.
And like that “poof” he’s Gone !! 💥
Man I got chills every time I hear that line
THANK YOU for letting me re-experience this movie for the first time vicariously.
This is perhaps the best reaction video i've ever seen, so far. WOOT! \o/
Dude I cannot believe the movies you have not seen. I wish I was you and could see all these great movies for the first time and be blown away again.
