My sole on my Salomon XA 3d ultra 2 lasted 130km and the outer sole started peeling off. Took the shoe back and recieved a new pair.... they only lasted 30km with the same fault! the outer sole peels off!
I bought this exact pair of shoes in March of 2014. By July, less than 4 months of normal trail-running use later, they were torn completely across the mess on the top of the foot on both shoes and were unwearable. I tried to return them, but Salomon said the wear was "inconsistent with normal wear" and refused to replace them. Inconsistent??? All I ever did was run groomed local mountain trails with a bit of elevation gain. This was my first pair of Salomons and I was excited to finally try them. What a disappointment in the product and customer service.
+Grothag I went back to Asics Gel-Venture, which is a lighter trailrunner for about half the price of these Salomons and they held up extremely well. No rips or separations anywhere after nearly 1,000 miles of running trails. There is a lot to love about the Salomons and I think they are a really good summer hiking shoe. Great sole, sturdier design than typical trail-runners, comfortable, and the lacing system I eventually grew to love, but for whatever reason they just can't hold up to everyday trail-running. The flex points on the mesh on top will start to rip within months and eventually tear all the way across. Salomon DID eventually replace my first pair after I contacted them a second time, but the exact same problem happened with the new pair.
I have used two pair of these with GTX ... they are great all-round tracking and trail running shoes.... the cons are> (1) the grip is poor over wet hills, roots and over snow, (2) the fabric of the upper top front of the shoe breaks after a year or two. I would like to see the same kind of outer sole as on the X ULTRA GTX hiking shoes or XT Wings 3 or possible Speedcross 3 CS, which I believe have better grip, yet prob. not as durable.
Thanks for watching! The Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra 2 is a multi sport shoe, recommended for trails and rough terrain. On our opinion, they are quite heavy for road running. Salomon does make "door to trail shoes" that can be used on the road and on the trail. You may want to check out the Salomon shoes that have "XR" or "Sense" in the naming.

*mesh* on top, not 'mess'.
+mtclimber These type of shoes look like they are built for a run or two. Did you manage do find shoes that are more durable ?
