Just a guess but I noticed the older engines are loud such as on 727 MD 80 (DC-9 types) but are smaller. Could it be they are more "turbo" then "Fan" (low bi-pass I think)?
just read that they are higher bi-pass but wonder if that is by comparison to the older models. They do seem loud and seem to have less engine cowl to allow for a big fan blades
