Funny you don't mention senior apartments in central San Diego I currently live in one in Hillcrest 700 sq. ft. top floor of a 4 story building built in 1986 many including mine have been upgraded with new windows, stainless steel appliances, granite counters, wood floors and I pay $2,100 incl. parking. And Hillcrest is pricey were you to even find a 100 yr. old house that should be torn down for a million plus. Other senior apts. here are HUD and if you can get sec. 8 in a state where the waitlist isn't so long you can always transfer once you get it. Then too are mobile home communities, yeah most are leased land, some not but if you want a modest 800 sq. ft. home to larger home 1,400 sq.ft. that isn't a condo or a townhouse and room to breathe not packed in like sardines, many also with amenities pool, spa, etc. and group activities. You know $500K or higher isn't a start number for most seniors living on fixed income wanting to move to San Diego. Just an example right now in El Cajon is a smaller 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom brand new double wide mobile home for $140k with current space rent of $1,100; older park but has a pool and blocks from all major shopping on 2nd st. If you don't want an apt. there is that option and mobile parks are throughout San Diego County. I picked one up 7 yrs. ago for $20k a 1999 1,344 sq. ft. put in $30k and just sold 2 yrs ago for $150k. O.k. your not going to make millions on a mobile home, but if you looking to get away from the rust belt I am originally from Milwaukee, WI and live in "America's Finest City" or surrounding area you might have to make some compromises. And that said still be able to have a nice place to live that doesn't take all your savings and monthly income for a place just to sleep and eat. Just Sayin' Jim
