You and fish shops should think about selling this filter already setup with plants, leca, and established bacteria for people just starting out with a new aquarium! It would save them so many headaches and lost of fish!
You can build it from a window or railing planter box. It would require plugging the drain holes and modifying by the addition of a return, but they are much larger and can be had from 17 to 36 inches. They hold a lot of media. I use pumice gravel.
I have done a version of this in the past 🐟🪴Window box Planter HOUSEPLANT WATER FILTER for Fish Tank 🪴🐟 ruclips.net/video/DlLwRmuVm6M/видео.html and I do like the idea, However, I want the filter to hang on the back of the tank, low profile, easy to take off when I want to, etc and so far the hob filter box “template” fits the bill, I think.
That is a really cool idea! I have never heard of any of this stuff. Over the past couple years I've been given old filters and aquariums whenever the kids (or their parents, lol) get tired of the hobby. I've got three little pumps that came off of those internal Tetra filters, and I've been thinking about what I could use them for. They're not very powerful, so something like this would probably be perfect.
Had never considered using breeder boxes this way. This is going to be a huge help with the essentially plant-free shell dweller tank I'm planning. My immediate thought was to use sponge filters to power the boxes, specifically the new Aquarium Co-op sponges with the green extendable tubes.
Made some boxes from plastic flower pots, hang inside my tank enclosure, (back and one side 5" higher than front) I grow lucky bamboo, ferns and lately, cherry tomato plants , roots grow through soil into tank....🍻👍🏻🇿🇦
I had not seen the h.o.b. siphon before. You could also put the sponge on the intake of the water pump, or use the breeder box bubbling intake with the only addition being a sponge on the intake, that way you have beneficial bacteria in the sponge and more room for plants in the breeder box.
I had the same idea while spawning corydoras and bristlenose in the same breeder box. I have riparium plants growing in hydroponic pots inside of the tank, but i always struggled with having enough space in the tank. Even if this box could be adapted in a more clean method by fusing this box as an added chamber onto a HOB, or creating a whole chamber out of ABS plastic. I think if something like that could be created and streamlined, the whole community could benefit from it.
How much of the Pothos vine do you normally put in the tank? I have a piece with probably 18" of bare stalk... would you put all of it in the tank or only the end few inches?
You can do either way. The 18 inch section will grow roots at each node that is under water so you will have more roots but only submerging a few inches of the stem is fine too.
I have also wanted to add plants without interrupting the current setup which includes submerged plants. I have researched adding a freshwater sump, but it seems overly complicated and intimidating. Have you ever considered a freshwater sump? You’d be able to add so many more plants that you can train to grow around the aquarium, it would look so nice!
No I haven’t used a sump, I’ve just grown tons of plants directly in my tanks. Roots going all the way into the substrate. You can see them in my tour videos. The downside is that it’s so permanent. Difficult to change out plants if I want to try a different design without making a mess inside the tank.
For the first method - have you ever had the vacuum from hob to box stop? Do you ever have to restart that vacuum? I like the first method best since I have a 10g. But do you have any recommendations for a nano pump for the second method? This video is fantastic, subbed!
The only time the siphon stops is if there’s a power outage. If you use a pump, I recommend a 50 gph pump, there should be a link in the video description?
@@plantlifeproject There is and it still works! I did check it out. Overall, this video has given me some great ideas about how to retool my filtration based on the breeder box. I also picked up some swiss cheese plant since watching! Thank you! 💜

Nice video. I already have a central air system in my fish room and currently use this concept. The disadvantage of using an existing HOB is it draws additional power. If you have fish like African cichlids that tear up plants inside the tanks so the HOB with the breeder box via siphon works best IMO because you still need the mechanical filtration along with the biological. You get the best of both worlds! For my other tanks that are already planted, the air method makes the most sense, it's the noise like you mentioned is a major negative. I just found this vid that uses an existing sponge filter. ruclips.net/video/NbkwSM92Pbw/видео.html. Thought this was pretty ingenious.
Hey, I just setup a fish tank & I made a video "Trying Another Fish Tank - Thank you @bioaquatix9097 for the fish and Thank you @plantlifeproject" to thank you for the breeder box idea - although, I have not tried it yet...

I like that, it would make it so easy for anyone to get started
I especially like the clear plastic instead of the gray and the reuse opportunity of an unused breeder box! Subbed!
Awesome, Thank you, And welcome to the channel !
This type of filter is interesting, I made one using a pot for plants and in it I put lucky bamboo seedlings.
Very cool!
Great video! Your early videos made growing plants in aquariums very approachable! Keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
haven't seen the last one before, that was a cool idea.
Thanks!

You are always coming up with some amazing ideas bro!! Thanks
Glad you like them!
Brilliant idea ❤
Thank you! 😊
Can't wait to try the first method siphoning off the hob! Can't believe I passed up that same breeder box at a local swap! 😮
Very cool. Love the videos. Thanks

That sounds like a great way to use those pumps

Yes, combined with a sponge filter would be a good idea, especially in tanks with fish not so compatible with plants
I do like the look of underwater root systems, but these satellites also look cool and convenient
Awesome video. Alot of great ideas.
really like this idea

Genius 🎉❤
Thanks, but there’s so much room for improvement I think.
i did this a few years ago with moderate success but never considered a few of the ways u powered it such as siphoning off a HOB
Hey, question. Do you get mold on your volcanic rocks when you use them in this fashion? I do.
No, I don’t get mold. Do you have this problem?
@@plantlifeproject yep, fuzzy white. On nearly all the samples I have that are wet and exposed to air..

Does this still work if you are using a canister filter? I just want of my home plants onto a new tank 22 gallon long that im planning out right now.
Haven’t tried it myself, you should try it out, though. See if it works!
Had been using this method n less plants in tank no wc so fast only top up.
how do u use an undergravel filter in a planted tank?

@@plantlifeproject thanks. I just posted a vid about it.
Not to improve but to buy sump 😐
Diy that'll cost you more than a new one sump with 4 grid
Yeah, many DIY projects make the most sense cost wise if you already have a lot of the parts laying around.
