    You and fish shops should think about selling this filter already setup with plants, leca, and established bacteria for people just starting out with a new aquarium! It would save them so many headaches and lost of fish!

    You can build it from a window or railing planter box. It would require plugging the drain holes and modifying by the addition of a return, but they are much larger and can be had from 17 to 36 inches. They hold a lot of media. I use pumice gravel.

      I have done a version of this in the past
      🐟🪴Window box Planter HOUSEPLANT WATER FILTER for Fish Tank 🪴🐟
      ruclips.net/video/DlLwRmuVm6M/видео.html
      and I do like the idea, However, I want the filter to hang on the back of the tank, low profile, easy to take off when I want to, etc and so far the hob filter box “template” fits the bill, I think.

    That is a really cool idea! I have never heard of any of this stuff. Over the past couple years I've been given old filters and aquariums whenever the kids (or their parents, lol) get tired of the hobby. I've got three little pumps that came off of those internal Tetra filters, and I've been thinking about what I could use them for. They're not very powerful, so something like this would probably be perfect.

    • @plantlifeproject
      @plantlifeproject  11 месяцев назад +1

      That sounds like a great way to use those pumps

    Had never considered using breeder boxes this way. This is going to be a huge help with the essentially plant-free shell dweller tank I'm planning. My immediate thought was to use sponge filters to power the boxes, specifically the new Aquarium Co-op sponges with the green extendable tubes.

    • @plantlifeproject
      @plantlifeproject  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, combined with a sponge filter would be a good idea, especially in tanks with fish not so compatible with plants

    I had not seen the h.o.b. siphon before. You could also put the sponge on the intake of the water pump, or use the breeder box bubbling intake with the only addition being a sponge on the intake, that way you have beneficial bacteria in the sponge and more room for plants in the breeder box.

  • @45crazytank
    @45crazytank 11 месяцев назад

    I had the same idea while spawning corydoras and bristlenose in the same breeder box. I have riparium plants growing in hydroponic pots inside of the tank, but i always struggled with having enough space in the tank. Even if this box could be adapted in a more clean method by fusing this box as an added chamber onto a HOB, or creating a whole chamber out of ABS plastic. I think if something like that could be created and streamlined, the whole community could benefit from it.

    How much of the Pothos vine do you normally put in the tank? I have a piece with probably 18" of bare stalk... would you put all of it in the tank or only the end few inches?

    • @plantlifeproject
      @plantlifeproject  11 месяцев назад +1

      You can do either way. The 18 inch section will grow roots at each node that is under water so you will have more roots but only submerging a few inches of the stem is fine too.

  • @ramonsita625
    @ramonsita625 11 месяцев назад

    I have also wanted to add plants without interrupting the current setup which includes submerged plants. I have researched adding a freshwater sump, but it seems overly complicated and intimidating. Have you ever considered a freshwater sump? You’d be able to add so many more plants that you can train to grow around the aquarium, it would look so nice!

    • @plantlifeproject
      @plantlifeproject  11 месяцев назад

      No I haven’t used a sump, I’ve just grown tons of plants directly in my tanks. Roots going all the way into the substrate. You can see them in my tour videos. The downside is that it’s so permanent. Difficult to change out plants if I want to try a different design without making a mess inside the tank.

    For the first method - have you ever had the vacuum from hob to box stop? Do you ever have to restart that vacuum?
    I like the first method best since I have a 10g. But do you have any recommendations for a nano pump for the second method?
    This video is fantastic, subbed!

    • @plantlifeproject
      @plantlifeproject  2 месяца назад +1

      The only time the siphon stops is if there’s a power outage. If you use a pump, I recommend a 50 gph pump, there should be a link in the video description?

    Nice video. I already have a central air system in my fish room and currently use this concept. The disadvantage of using an existing HOB is it draws additional power. If you have fish like African cichlids that tear up plants inside the tanks so the HOB with the breeder box via siphon works best IMO because you still need the mechanical filtration along with the biological. You get the best of both worlds! For my other tanks that are already planted, the air method makes the most sense, it's the noise like you mentioned is a major negative. I just found this vid that uses an existing sponge filter. ruclips.net/video/NbkwSM92Pbw/видео.html. Thought this was pretty ingenious.
