    Persona 4 is the happiest, most comforting game about a murder mystery in history.
    If I'm in a severe depressive rut, playing Persona 4 does wonders to help. It feels like visiting your hometown and seeing all your closest friends and family again.

    4’s overworld music changes with the weather. Your Affection plays when it’s sunny. Heartbeat Heartbreak plays when it’s cloudy, and nothing when it’s pouring rain.

    Your Affection is peak Persona 4. Just an undeniably catchy, warm pop song the fits the vibes of the game so well.
    As much as I love Beneath The Mask, When the Moon is Reaching Stars, and Changing Seasons; the P4 overworld songs (Your Affection, Heartbeat, Heartbreak, and Signs of Love) are the best

    Haha unfortunately "Backside of the TV" is a song you hear a LOT in-game. In the lest spoilery way possible, the Name is literally the location. And this is a song you hear at the beginning of every dungeon, in the "Preparation" Area. There's like maybe 2-3 exceptions.

    Been binging your videos today so I thought I'd leave a comment!
    Your Affection is the overworld theme when it's sunny and Backside of the TV is the song that plays in the hub area outside of the game's dungeons, which are all in an alternate world that the characters access by climbing into a TV in order to rescue victims kidnapped and thrown in by a serial killer, hence the name and the lyrical content. I agree that Lotus Juice's remix is much more listenable on its own and I think the original just works better in its context.
    I'd love to see you do Pursuing My True Self (opening theme), Heartbeat, Heartbreak (cloudy day overworld theme), and Signs of Love (nighttime at your home) from P4 as well, they're some of my favourite songs in all of P3-5. They also each have extended/different versions on the Never More - Reincarnation - album which is where that jazzy version of Heaven you listened to came from.
    Peace!

  • @cerebralisk
    @cerebralisk 10 часов назад +24

    I think the thing about normal Backside of the TV is that it's only intended to be heard very briefly, since it's the BGM in a transitional area you don't spend a lot of time in.

  • @Cool-Vest

    The "thump thump" sound of the bass in Backside of the TV reminds me of a heartbeat. Makes sense. The feeling the song is meant to evoke is one of both apprehension and determination: as your group prepares to delve into a fog of horrors to save a life.

    3's music is also a lot more unique compared to 4.

  • @jmdwow
    @jmdwow 2 часа назад

    The interesting part with Backside of the TV is that, in game, the first version works really well specifically because of how little of the song you often hear. It's basically the 'hub' theme you only hear for a bit as you equip your characters to head into dungeons, while the dancing all night version is much better as an individual song, since the experience of listening to it without all of the other game aspects is such a massive improvement, and that would be the focus for a rhythm/dancing game.

  • @cheffdonty
    @cheffdonty 6 часов назад +5

    Yeah the original version is just supposed to be a kind of march. You listen to it in an area where you prepare your characters for some dungeon crawling. The remix is more of a proper standalone song.

    • @Dasaltwarrior
      @Dasaltwarrior 5 часов назад

      A march is a good way to describe it, yeah. It's what plays as you prepare for the games dungeons

  • @weertangel7231

    Your Affection is the game's daytime theme when the sun is shining and school is over and it fits really well.
    Backside of the TV is the Midnight channel theme, the place u go to fight shadows and save people.
    the thing with both songs is that ingame the sound quality is so bad that u can barely hear the lyrics and it just blurs together, it actually took me hearing covers of both songs to actually hear and understand the lyrics.
    As for P4 itself, its alot more laidback in its theme then 3 or 5, it still has its dark moments but the fact its set in a small town in japan instead of a big city really gives it another vibe.

  • @hilleltaco
    @hilleltaco 7 часов назад +2

    I think it makes sense that the remix lands better as a proper song, it has more going on for sure, but I think what you said about how "the aggression is gone" is why I like the original in its particular context. It's repetitive for sure, but that harsh, constant beat makes for a pretty oppressive transition song from the generally chill overworld to the surreal dungeons. It's actually not unrealistic to hear "your affection" and "backside of the TV" back to back, and I think that sudden contrast matches the location change pretty well. Also, maybe this last point is just me making stuff up, but considering the TV theming is actually pretty literal, the synth+distortion (particularly at the start) always reminds me of a sort of electrical buzzing and I just think that's neat
    It's one of those interesting cases where I think they're both good (personally), but I don't think either one would work as well in the other's place

  • @MFMegaZeroX7
    @MFMegaZeroX7 6 часов назад +4

    About 4 being controversial: Before 5 came out, 4 was the most popular and most recent, and some long time fans felt it was overrated. When 5 came out, a lot of the more casual audience moved to having 5 as their favorite, while the older Persona fans have 3 as their favorite. Then, when combined with some of the old hipster resentment from when 4 was the popular kid on the block, it left 4 with the smallest fanbase of 3/4/5. And I say this for someone who was more "meh" on Persona 4. But I think its flaws aren't really the reason its the least popular as much as these sort of fanbase dynamics.

  • @mr.e3123

    Your Affection plays in the Town Overworld. Backside of the TV is played in a transitionary area between The Town Overworld and the various RPG Dungeons hence it feeling like its a loop in the original version because its a space filler on the way to other musical tracks. The Overarching Theme of Persona 4 is Pursuing The Truth in all its Myriad Incarnations.

    Regarding backside of the TV, it plays when you are picking out your party members and preparing to enter a dungeon, so you typically only hear it for about 30 seconds to a minute at a time realistically. The game version fits a lot better for the context of where it plays, whereas the Dancing All Night/Lotus Juice version is WAY better as an actual song to listen to all the way through and would probably not fit into the game as well

  • @Dasaltwarrior
    @Dasaltwarrior 6 часов назад +1

    Your Affection is representative of what you hear in the non-dungeon parts of Persona 4, while Backside of T.V. is what you hear as you prepare to go into the dungeons
    You typically hear the latter very briefly, but it is prevelant through the whole game. It sorta primes you for the tonal contrast between the games two sides, the life-sim highschool section and the warped dungeons
    P3 and P4 tend to create contrast between the two, while P5 sorta puts less emphasis on it. It causes P3 and P4's "sound" to be harder to pin down, but they can pretty much go as such
    P3: Hip hop and R&B
    P4: Pop and Pop rock
    P5: Jazz and Hard rock
    All of them have a sprinkling of Shibuya Kei as well, even going back to Persona 1 and the Persona 2 duology

  • @Venomousse
    @Venomousse 8 часов назад +2

    It's pretty simple actually. P5 is the latest main Persona game and P3 recently got a remake, so those two are both "current". P4 on the other hand is a lot older, so even though it was very popular at the time I think a lot of newer fans of the series haven't played it. The Persona fanbase in the west has also grown significantly larger since P5 released and became mainstream - P4 was more of a cult hit despite being pretty huge in Japan. I don't think P4 needs a remake but if they end up releasing one, it'll likely be popular again.

    Persona 4 is actually pretty beloved.
    It had the most spin-off games for a while before P5 took its crown.
    And now with the P3 remake being super popular, P4 has kinda fallen in the background for Persona fans a little bit.

  • @Kurlija

    P4 was controversial with some folks when it came out because it was such a sudden shift in tone from the darkness and edginess of P3. This mellowed out over the years, and now all three “modern” Personas are equally loved for different reasons, I’d say.
    Regarding Backside of the TV, the reason it’s so stagnant is likely due to the fact it plays in the main hub or “preparation area” before dungeons. I won’t reveal the meaning behind the name in case you ever want to go in blind.

    there is nothing inherently controversial about 4, the only consistant reason people hate on it is because that was when Atlus really started milking the series for spin off titles, and making it such that all of the spin offs were considered canon. which is fair, but the issue they have then isn't with 4 itself, but the numerous other titles featuring the cast of 4(and sometimes 3) that they "have" to buy to get the full story.

    persona 5 is pretty fucking stupid joke, you do extremly morally gray actions, but instead of ever questionning themselves the protags are just mary sues who cant be wrong and all of their opponents are turned into cartoon villains instead of having their valid points addressed, maruki was the only good arc, but not worth playing the whole game

    Persona 4 is sort of the black sheep of the series, with its lighter tone and more focus on slice of life elements. It was actually the most popular in the series for a while, but Persona 5's massive success changed that.
    Nowadays, Persona 4 is in kind of a weird spot. Its status as the black sheep inherently makes it more niche, and the game's content doesn't really work as well in 2025 as it did in 2008. When it first came out, it was rare to see any game address LGBTQ issues, so P4 was praised for how it handled those topics. But nowadays, it's the opposite- Those themes come off as handled very sloppily. What was once a selling point really isn't anymore, so a big chunk of the fanbase just isn't really there anymore.
    So, yeah, it's not terribly surprising that you don't hear about it as much as you do 3 or 5 nowadays.

      Subjectively. Original Persona 5 lost me a bit after the first half, because the calendar system was pretty much seen already in P3 and P4, and heists weren't that different from dungeons of P4. (Still finished it, though, but after that I had no interest in touching P5R.) Too bad the calendar system and social links became so popular, as playing Persona 2: Innocent Sin actually felt fresh because it had a tighter pacing and could focus more on the main cast.
