I think Janikowskis field goal percentage might not be accurate to his kicking ability because as you saw he was out to attempt almost impossible field goals which would hurt his percentage
Yeah that’s true. The Raiders had him do these absurd FG try’s, like 65, 68, 67 yards. He had the leg to do so, but they always kept trying just to break the record. Just shows how much of a threat he was and how much they trusted him
Yeah, you're gonna put the really good guy out for harder kicks which'll put him at more risk of missing. If your kicker is mediocre you're gonna send him out less, and only on easier kicks which he'll make more often.

You can say one good thing about the way Al Davis drafted: He knew a great punter when he saw one. Ray Guy & even Shane Lechler are probably 2 of the best.

As a Raiders fan.... I'd say janikowski was worth the first round pick. In the way of his strong leg and managing to stick around and be a consistent face for a franchise that needed it. And I'm so happy that we've had good luck with kickers. Carlson is money 💰

Furthermore his number is not reflecting his true skills for he was far more often trying impossible kicks than the other, higher ranked kickers.
I personally think Janikowski was worth it despite not having the highest field goal percentage, which I attribute to lots of long attempts over the course of his career. Growing up in the 2000s as a Raiders fan, my Dad and I would always say: “we may be one of the worst teams, but we have the best kicker in the league”
@@enriquedeltoro227 and that dropped his average significantly. Look at his beyond 50 field goal percentage, and he was kicking about 55.24%. A lot of that drop off can be attributed to these 60+ yard kicks.
It’s funny with hindsight now because they took him in the first with Tom Brady not going til the 6th. Obviously can’t blame them for not getting Brady, just funny looking back
The Ray Guy selection was probably laughed at until Ray Guy started playing. He was a great athlete and he changed punting forever. Hes now a HOF member. Love Ray Guy
Career FG % is so misleading bc there’s dudes on that list with significantly less attempts in general and less attempts attempts from 55+, which wasn’t common when he was at his peak.
The Raiders also got Janikowski because back then 1st round rookies got paid a truckload. They were pretty stacked on both sides of the ball so decided to go with a kicker.
KTO is such a legendary RUclipsr man. I’ve never been into what happened to nfl players series until I heard his legendary voice narrating it. The best sports RUclipsr around no doubt.

@@YOSSARIAN313 He was more accurate inside of 40 than Vinatieri. Not to mention so many of his FG attempts were beyond 40 yards that his overall % would never have been as high as the other guys you mention.

So here's the real question of this video. If you knew that Justin Tucker was going to become the greatest kicker of all-time, much like Madden did with Guy and punters, would HE have been worth a 1st round pick?
So many first round picks are literal busts that accomplish nothing in the leauge so personally if I knew I could have the greatest player ever at a position even of it's kicker I'd argue it's a no brainer
I grew up watching Ray guy playing for the raiders and he was a star when kickers were not Stars. An incredible punter who almost always made the other team start from a bad position.
If everyone knew how good he would be, then yes, definitely. If you asked a team like the Bears a few years ago if they would give a first if they knew they would be getting a high caliber kicker, they would pay it in a heartbeat to not lose in the playoffs because of a missed FG.
This is the content I’m ready for. Honestly I get surprised kickers don’t get drafted earlier on since they’re so important. I mean they account for like a third of a teams points in a season
The reason is you expect your offense to score you think the other team is gonna sit around for a whole week and say okay as long as we can score fgs we'll win nope it's 2 fgs for one td can't waste possessions like that
Kickers aren't drafted early because they aren't drafted early. Sounds stupid, but teams seem to have agreed not to draft these positions early, so it's unwise to spend a first or second round pick on a player that would likely still be available in later rounds. Drafting doesn't happen in a vacuum, and since there are more contested positions teams go for those instead. But in terms of value compared to draft position I agree, kickers are drafted way too late.
I remember when the Raiders drafted Janikowski. At first I was puzzled why they would waste a first round pick on a kicker. However when I looked back at the 99 season, the raiders lost 4 games by 3 points or less. Their kicker that season (Micheal Husted) was abysmal and missed so man easy fg's and pat's .That was the difference between going 8-8 and 12-4. Al Davis knew what he was doing by drafting Janikowki so high.
My question for seabass percentages us how many attempts tho? I would imagine he has more attempts than most seeing how long he played and how much they depended on him
Yeah he is number 10 in terms of attempts. I also recall him being thrown out there for tons of long kicks so his chances of missing were higher. I can see arguments both ways but i think he’s still worth a first
He was more accurate inside of 40 than Vinatieri. His numbers are lower because he attempted more than half his field goals beyond 40 yards which is the NFL record by a country mile.
I don't know if ANY kicker is worth a first rounder but if people think a kicker is worth a first rounder than Janikowski belongs in the discussion, one of the best kickers in history imo him and Vinatieri were the only 2 kickers I paid any attention to growing up watching football, Vinatieri because he won so many playoff/super bowl games with his leg and because he played for my team the colts and Janikowski because no matter where he was kicking from you always felt as tho it had a good chance of going in and more often than not his kicks were coming from at least 40+ yards out, it was always entertaining to watch him try and kick it from distances that would be laughed at if anyone but him were kicking it and a good portion of the time they'd go in and you'd just shake your head knowing that the fact they even had him attempt it was ridiculous but damned if he didn't make just as many as he missed 😂
tbh I’ve never thought of Janikowski as someone not worthy of first round pick. In Poland he had a kind of a cult status (when he was active) and I’ve heard opinions of him being atg and even named K version of Tom Brady. Another great video!

The Chiefs grabbed Harrison Butker off the Carolina Panthers practice squad in 2017. Since then, he’s been the 2nd most accurate kicker in NFL history, trailing only Justin Tucker. A team using their 1st round pick on a kicker is madness, absolute madness.
Just a reminder: KTO, UrinatingTree, Flemlo, and FivePoints are the Four Horsemen of Sports RUclips. Scooter is definitely an honorable mention, and some damn good guys bring up the rear behind him
And now the two best kickers in the league, Tucker and Boswell, were both undrafted. With Tucker probably being the best ever. Granted it still wouldn't make sense to draft someone like Tucker in the first round, but once you get to rounds 5-7, if there is a possibility of a K/P being amazing, it's well worth the pick imo. An average kicker is worth more than some rotational player you might get in rounds 5-7.
janikowski was one of the most popular raiders jerseys at games for a long while, right there with charles woodson. my dad actually raised me telling me he made that field goal, and i think i’ll tell my kids that too. best first rounder in raiders history
That Justin Tucker field goal still bothers me because on the previous play there was a blatant delay of game that was missed. This wasn't even a a case where the ball was snapped right after the clock hit zero, but when you actually look at the film where the play clock is visible you can see it hit zero for over a second before the center even starts moving. I have tremendous respect for Tucker and what he can do, but had the referees done their job correctly, that kick likely wouldn't have even been attempted.
Fun fact: In the 2000 NFL draft, the Oakland Raiders selected both a kicker in the 1st round, and a punter in the 5th round while Tom Brady was still on the board.
@@Rowdy1407 They would've almost certainly won Super Bowls with Brady considering they were a "tuck rule" away from advancing to the AFC Championship Game in the 2001 playoffs and actually made the Super Bowl in the 2002 playoffs where their quarterback, Rich Gannon threw 5 interceptions.
@@bluelivesmurder5696 - The leap in logic that the Raiders team which couldn't beat the Patriots would have beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh and then the Rams is such a stretch.
That Justin Tucker kick 🤯. Was half watching that game with my gfs son, hits crossbar goes in, both sit straight up wide eyed and go “Woa” at the same time lol
I’d be curious to look at Janikowski’s touchback rate back when the kickoff spot was at the 30. It doesn’t give much more credit to his career but I think it did give him slightly more value in his time when having a big leg was more important
There was a third kicker in the SWC that should be mentioned in the Erxleben, Steve Little story and that’s Tony Franklin. All three kickers were hitting 60+ field goals in college. What was also failed to mention is that college kickers were kicking field goals off tees. Franklin was the only one of the three that made the adjustment in the pros.
As a Raiders fan, Janikowski was a roller coaster ride of disappointment and absolute awe, a roller coaster that I would happily ride again. As far as a first rounder, I think he was well worth it given his booming kickoffs, infinite ability to kick long field goals, and as he got older, his accuracy improved to a pretty solid kicking average.
god damn i absolutely love a legendary kicker. so slept on but theyre almost always there for the most memorable moments good or bad. that clip at the very end was so sick
Say what you will about Al Davis, he got the kickers correct. Ray guy was up for Hall of Fame consideration multiple years. He's considered to be one of the greatest punters ever. Sebastian janikowski have one of the strongest legs of all time. His accuracy wasn't that bad, and his team really needed a good kicker when he was drafted. I can see Al Davis's thinking there.
Ray Guy didn't just have insane hangtime and distance, but he had insane accuracy. He could land a punt next to the sideline and pin the other team within their own 10-yard line consistently. Because of him, the Raiders constantly controlled field position, no matter how well the offense was playing.
Even the best kicker or punter only sees the field for a very few plays per game. I see no justification for taking one over any other position in rounds 1-2 when the players are expected to contribute right away.
You can draft a spectacular kicker or punter in the first, but there are SO many intangible factors that make a good kicker and there's enough talent available later and after the draft that you might as well save the 1st round pick for something more important that you're going to see on the field more. It seems that the prevailing thought for most GMs is that a good kicker is a luxury that you stumble in to. Stephen Gostkowski and Morten Anderson were 4th rounders, and Adam Vinitieri was undrafted, for example.
I had Billy Cundiff on my fantasy team one year and he had a solid couple years with the Ravens, so when I saw that an undrafted rookie was taking his spot, I knew that kid had to be more than just good. Here's to the legendary Justin Tuker! I'd take him #1 if I ever did a fantasy league again.
As an Arkansas fan when you mentioned Steve Little I was like “Hey maybe he’s related to Cam Little haha.” Joking. And then I was like “is that a…. Is that a hogs helmet?” Holy shit how did I not know about this guy?? Great video man keep it up.
Seabass attempted 542 FG in a 19 year career. Comparing him to Parkey is outright disrespectful 58 made FGs over 50 yards to Parkeys 128 total made FGs.
Man that's so tragic for Little... I knew a guy whose brother got news he got accepted to play keeper at a school and after his game was so excited to get home and tell his parents about it and got in a fatal car accident.. All of that hard work and a young, bright future gone in an instant.
Something that is lost here in the beginning is that we forget that the nfl didn’t have free substitutions until 1949. So the first 13 years there were kickers and punters that were drafted round 1 but played other positions. A good example is Sammy Baugh, obviously a great QB but also an excellent punter drafted 6th overall. Additionally into the 80s guys like Danny White and Tom Tupa were dual punters and QBs. So it really takes until kickers/punters became a true specialty position that this actually applies.
If there was a kicker who was guaranteed to make a kick from inside the 50 and/or a punter who can guarantee punt 50 yards to be downed inside the 10, how high would you draft them?
As a longtime Cleveland fan, it's hard to celebrate anything to do with Baltimore for various reasons. That said, in the spirit of the game and sportsmanship, damn that 66-yarder from Tucker is still so impressive every time it's watched back.
Ray Guy is still the greatest punter/kicker of all time. Not even a Raiders fan but as a fan of the game you can't diss what Ray Guy achieved especially during that time period
Only Raider fans can truly understand why Seabass was so beloved. He and Shane Lechler - the punter - were pretty much the lone bright spots on that team for about a decade. Our O and D might have sucked, but at least we could rely on our ST. Best combo in the league, and every time Janikowski was trotted out for one of those insanely long tries, you couldn't help but be optimistic he might make it. Was always happy to see it, because it was the most likely way for us to get some points on the board. Can't imagine how much more praise and recognition this guy would have gotten if he'd actually been on a good team - a boon for Raider fans, but a real shame for him. Stats don't tell the whole picture, even with kickers - he'll always be one of the best in my book.

I'm tired of watching that Tucker kick against Detroit since it only happened after a missed delay of game call
Matt Gay was probably the best kicker in the league last year, 32/34 on field goals, 48/49 extra points.
This just shows you how one of a kind John Madden was. Legend
Amazed Justin Tucker went undeadted. As a Longhorns fan, we knew what he could do. That dude can kick.
Ray Guy was an amazing athlete. Hell he was the 3rd string QB.
janikowski was one of the most popular raiders jerseys at games for a long while, right there with charles woodson. my dad actually raised me telling me he made that field goal, and i think i’ll tell my kids that too. best first rounder in raiders history
I love your videos kto I have been watching you since 2018 keep up the great work
Seabass was definitely a character, he fit in perfectly as a Raider. That kick of J Tucker's is still pretty awesome to watch!
8:31 saints could’ve had Kellen Winslow but picked a punter😂😂😂
When you straight leg kick you have a limit to the yardage so the soccer style kicks actually made 40-50-60 yards kick more obtainable
Yo, as a Lions fan, that ending was brutal. Thanks for that reminder lol
It was just a normal game for Detroit.
#Lions Pride 😎✌️
That percentage is deceptive as hell especially right after talking about how he was sent out for an impossible kick
“Soccer style kicking” in a sport yall call “football” is a hilariously ironic statement
I swear! I always love the last clip of a great highlight. It just make happy
Seabass will always be a Raider in my eyes.
100% worth the 1st round pick.
Justin Tucker is so damn insane. 91.1 percentage fg percentage. And he hits BOMBS too. Not just hitting chip.shots
Ray Guy was completely worth it. 3 Super Bowl victories.
The only Punter in the HOF. Ya I'd say that was one of Al Davis' most cleaver draft picks. He literally controled games with his foot.
Ray Guy is the best punter in history.
As a 100% unbiased Texans fan, I have to disagree.
Shane Lechler all the way
@@thetexanshurtme 0 rings
@@giovanniquiroz6931 who cares. Rings are a team stat
@@thetexanshurtme check the stats guy better in every way😂lechler also claims raiders not even the Texans sooo
every time i see a KTO video pop up in my feed, I know it's finna be a straight BANGER
So much great content here, well researched, and a topic the feels original
Fun fact: In the 2000 NFL draft, the Oakland Raiders selected both a kicker in the 1st round, and a punter in the 5th round while Tom Brady was still on the board.
And then they later lost to brady in the tuck rule lol
You gotta admit though, Shane Lechler was insane
@@Rowdy1407 They would've almost certainly won Super Bowls with Brady considering they were a "tuck rule" away from advancing to the AFC Championship Game in the 2001 playoffs and actually made the Super Bowl in the 2002 playoffs where their quarterback, Rich Gannon threw 5 interceptions.
Imagine the absurd amount of cheating Brady would’ve done had he gone to the raiders lol
@@bluelivesmurder5696 - The leap in logic that the Raiders team which couldn't beat the Patriots would have beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh and then the Rams is such a stretch.
The only Seabass I remember was not a kicker. It was Sebastian Vollmer, an offensive lineman, and the first German to win a Superbowl.
Matt Araiza from SDSU ought to get some looks this year
Just wait for Matt Araiza to be drafted. He's a beast. (Not in the 1st round though, probably the 3rd round)
This certainly aged well
I love you putting in the GOAT at the end for no particular reason.
It just had to happen to Detroit didn’t it! Sigh! 🤦♂️
That Justin Tucker kick 🤯. Was half watching that game with my gfs son, hits crossbar goes in, both sit straight up wide eyed and go “Woa” at the same time lol
The video of Raiders fans cheering for Janakowski probably having no clue who he is💀 the most raiders fan thing ever
Raider fans don't care, they in it for a good time.
idk what raider fans you talk to, but if you're a raiders fan you know who jano is lmao
Raider fans are everything Jets fans aren’t during the draft. Raiders cheer and go crazy no matter what. Jets fans boo everyone.
The Raiders 2000 draft HAS to go down as the best special teams draft by a single team of all time.
Only KTO can get me to watch a video about kickers
ew
I’d be curious to look at Janikowski’s touchback rate back when the kickoff spot was at the 30. It doesn’t give much more credit to his career but I think it did give him slightly more value in his time when having a big leg was more important
Does the goat respond if he does I’ve been watching you since you first started
I appreciate the support Adam
yes my son , i always reply
You are the best
There was a third kicker in the SWC that should be mentioned in the Erxleben, Steve Little story and that’s Tony Franklin. All three kickers were hitting 60+ field goals in college. What was also failed to mention is that college kickers were kicking field goals off tees. Franklin was the only one of the three that made the adjustment in the pros.
Rest in peace Ray Guy 🙏🏻
As a Raiders fan, Janikowski was a roller coaster ride of disappointment and absolute awe, a roller coaster that I would happily ride again. As far as a first rounder, I think he was well worth it given his booming kickoffs, infinite ability to kick long field goals, and as he got older, his accuracy improved to a pretty solid kicking average.
god damn i absolutely love a legendary kicker. so slept on but theyre almost always there for the most memorable moments good or bad. that clip at the very end was so sick
Let's not forget that the Raiders got Janikowski AND Lechler in the same draft. One of the best kicking duos ever. IMO.
RIP Ray guy.
Because of him, the Raiders constantly controlled field position, no matter how well the offense was playing.
fun fact: my grandpa played with Ray Guy in high school
It’s unique and awesome vids like these which is why I’m a loyal KTO-er!
Matt Araiza deserves to be a 1st round pick this year. He is a game changing punter and has potential to be as good as Ray Guy
Lol aged like milk
Even the best kicker or punter only sees the field for a very few plays per game. I see no justification for taking one over any other position in rounds 1-2 when the players are expected to contribute right away.
That last kick-----incredible!
I'll be honest, I thought this would be boring, but you did a great job making it interesting. Love your vids, keep up the good work.
There will never be another ray guy.
REST IN PEACE RAY GUY
As a long snapper, I appreciate this kicker punter love
Love the use of sports cards to represent players! Great content!!
If there was a kicker who was guaranteed to make a kick from inside the 50 and/or a punter who can guarantee punt 50 yards to be downed inside the 10, how high would you draft them?
Also check out 30% of every person drafted actually plays more than 2yrs.
As a longtime Cleveland fan, it's hard to celebrate anything to do with Baltimore for various reasons. That said, in the spirit of the game and sportsmanship, damn that 66-yarder from Tucker is still so impressive every time it's watched back.
Them Florida kickers are different. Se-bas and now Money McPherson
This is a certified hood classic
Alright KTO at this point I know you drop videos right when I gotta get shit done and of course I push that shit off to watch this
Sebass.....nuff said. A man's man.
Incredible documentary.
That Tucker kick at the end is wild.
