One of my all time fave Skynyrd songs. Once was rocking out to the song in my car, singing and drumming like a madman, until the cop pulled me over for speeding. I told him that Call me the Breeze from Skynyrd was on the radio and I lost track of my speed. He said "Great song!" and gave me a warning!!!

The writer of this song J.J. Cale, an Oklahoma country boy, became a rich man off songs like "Call Me The Breeze" and Eric Clapton's versions of "Cocaine" and "After Midnight". And yet I once read that he still preferred to live in a trailer or mobile home beside the road somewhere. Now that's a humble guy! "Un-burdened by the world" indeed!

Been a fan of JJ Cale since I was a kid because my mom would play his records all the time. So many of his songs have been covered by more famous artists. I have to say, though, I went to seem him perform as an adult and it was one of the worst concerts I've ever seen. The music was fine but he had no stage presence whatsoever and did nothing to engage the audience. So disappointing. Still LOVE his music though!

And to think, years prior to this song, Lynyrd Skynyrd was on a lunch break in the studio when one of their roadies, who was classically trained, sat down at the piano and started playing his version of Free Bird. The band walked back in and heard the roadie playing. Depending on who tells the story, it was several weeks or months later that the roadie became an official band member of Lynyrd Skynyrd. And just listening to him play the piano on this song, not to mention watching Jamel play "air piano" tells you all that you need to know. Great song, great reaction!

Thank you for the react/review of this song. I once had a friend named Breeze when I lived in New Orleans. When we met he introduced himself as Breeze. I replied “like the Lynyrd Skynyrd song, right?”. He seemed puzzled that I made that particular reference that ended up being right on point. We became friends and pretty much saw most of what Nola had to offer. The day he was leaving New Orleans I asked for his real name to add him on fb. His name was Jackson Bush. After Nola and corresponding through social media seemed to be going good. He was back in Texas with his wife and they were expecting their first child. About a week before his daughter was born, he was hospitalized with heart problems. His wife gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Jackson didn’t make it. He passed of heart failure. He never got to meet his daughter.
To see someone cold react to the song so wholeheartedly it brought a tear to my eye. Remembering the good times had with Breeze and discovering Nola just like a video game map. R.I.P. Breeze, can’t hear this song without it kicking up memories.
