She plows ahead and it pushes them off the cliff. If she had listened to her son even once, both of their fates might have been different.

On another note, Jia transforms into a whole nother person when speaking to her children. You get a glimpse of who she could've been if she didn't feel she had to fight for survival and glory everyday in the Forbidden City. Similar to when she's speaking about or looking at the Yu clan Lord.

This asshole Emperor could've chosen someone else for the marriage alliance, but still insisted in marrying Hengchuo, afraid that she'd be kept hostage, killed or raped, which still actually happened after marrying Dawachi...like, really? Also, for the killing part, Dawachi would never take the life of a foreign princess who was useful as blackmail and a bargaining chip. By giving her in marriage to him, Qianlong makes her Dawachi's property, which was much more dangerous and humiliated the Qing Empire too, because Dawachi could do anything he wanted. Had no money to start a war? Send someone else for the marriage! It's not like Dawachi specifically asked for Hengchuo's hand in the first place, like the Khorchin did with Jingse.

Hengchuo was married to the previous chief, but her husband was usurped and killed by Dawachi. She was then married off against her will to Dawachi by her brother, the Emperor, who couldn't afford a war with Dzungar at the time because the treasury being spent to deal with floods, so Qianlong made that arrangement to "protect" his hostage sister and appease Dawachi for a time. It wasn't mentioned that she had any kids by the previous chief, but she did get pregnant with Dawachi's child. In this scene, the Emperor finally defeated Dawachi with the help of Jia's clan, the Yu, and with the help of Consort Ying's clan, the Barin Tribe. Dawachi was captured and brought to the capitol, and Hengchuo was rescued, but she's already pregnant with his child, so she can't divorce him. That's why the Empress Dowager wants her daughter to move in with her to Cining Palace, so they can be together and get Hengchuo out of Dawachi's sight. Duanshu is Hengchuo's title when she married the first chief of Dzungar Tribe. According to Qing Dynasty tradition, princesses receive titles upon getting married. Thus, the Yu clan is appeased, and Yuyan is told that if she insists on making a fuss about it, they'll go public - with all the dirty deets about her machinations. To save face (for herself and her kids), she'll go along with it, and Ruyi's position as Empress will be upheld.
