St. Theodore Guerin Catholic High School, a diocesan school in the diocese of Lafayette in Indiana is a vibrant school with burgeoning enrollment. Academics are solid, but first and foremost and throughout all aspects of the school...administration, classrooms, sports, extracurriculars...the focus on Jesus Christ is paramount. And the partnership between Guerin Catholic and its feeder Catholic elementary schools is wonderful. The vast majority of my more than three-decade career in education has been in public schools, and after just three years at Guerin Catholic, I can tell you that the light and life and joy of this school are such as I have never seen anywhere else.
A good Catholic education is very important, but the primary source of catechesis is the Liturgy itself, the public prayer of the Church. As we pray, so we believe. Until the Church's liturgy is restored, the current situation will only continue.
there are Catholic school "deserts" which appear to follow contours of other economic "deserts" - groceries, pharmacies, housing, etc. In affluent communities with good public schools and high taxes to pay for them, parents can still send their kids to Catholic grade & high schools paying a reasonably substantial tuition and which are the socio-economic engine of these parishes. Good for them, yet what may be particularly secularism which leads to a loss of Catholic identity is joined by cuts of public funding for needy Catholic schools (what is called "wasteful education" in the media). The socio-economic disparity is a dynamic where the "rich get richer" even in Catholic formation which may pay off in the future but is lopsided today.
Given the complete mess the Catholic school system is from primary to secondary and, particularly, college, there is little to be benefitted from such an education any more. The Church leadership could not have done any better in damaging itself as well its various other parts if such injury had been its goal.
