Right there with you on the i3! I personally love it's funky style and carbon fiber shell. It's just so disappointing they never gave it the battery or motor upgrades it deserved. And on the used market, I just can't justify buying an i3 when I can get a Bolt EV that's faster and has at least twice the range for the same price, or just a tiny bit more.

The Bolt may be faster and have twice the range, but it's also about half the fun. I know I know, different machines with different focuses. -Travis

Travis, what is your take on Toyota's electric vehicle pickup concept? Little surprised you didn't mention it in this post.

    • @EVBuyersGuide
      @EVBuyersGuide  7 месяцев назад

That's a great point and I'm glad you asked. If enough people are interested I'll look at putting together a video covering more of the Japan Mobility Show but the reason I didn't touch on the Toyota concept is because I don't have a lot of faith in it. That's not to say it's not going to happen or I hate it (I love small trucks) but more so that it doesn't seem like something bound for the US in the next....5?.....years. It feels more like an effort to stay relevant in the conversation than it does a declaration of intent to build the product. And that's a shame. -Travis

@@EVBuyersGuideFaith can be very misleading.... For example where are all the Cybertrucks or GM Ultium EVs, that were supposed to be on the road by now?
I only mentioned it since, you posted less production worthy concept vehicles. And that the features on the Toyota Ev pickup truck, such as its midgate and multi-purpose tailgate, made it at least as newsworthy as those other concept vehicles.
And I believe the Ford Maverick has proved that there's a place in the US market for compact pickup trucks. And it's taking the Cybertruck about 5 years to come to the market and look how much press it's getting? Lastly Toyota is late to the EV party, but I don't think they are quite dead yet?
You made some valid points, but there are just as many, if not more counterpoints. Bottom line I just like to hear your take on the concept, even if you feel that it's unlikely to reach the market. In a future post or a reply either one would be good.

I'm happy to share my thoughts and ultimately I had to make more cuts this week than normal because of everything that was released at the show. My thoughts on the concept? Overall positive. It falls right between the Maverick and Santa Cruz and I think that's a great size for most people pickups. The front end styling isn't my favorite but overall it's an attractive vehicle. A midgate is a great way to make a truck more versatile/functional while keeping it small and I've been a fan since the Chevy Avalanche. Now, one thing I would like to se with next generation trucks is the introduction of a plug in hybrid model and not just BEV. These trucks take enormous batteries to be able to reach 300 miles of driving range and I'd love to see a 50 or so mile battery with a range extender powertrain setup. I don't think the EPU would lean that direction, but I also haven't really seen any other manufacturers indicating that's a focus for the US market. It seems counterintuitive to me but I'm assuming Jeep will be the first with the Gladiator and it's possible they're the only one over the next few years. -Travis

@@EVBuyersGuide Thank you for your input. I'm glad to see that your perspective seems to align with the pragmatic, EBG audience. But IMHO I doubt this format alone will attract a sufficient viewership to sustain the channel?
It made sense to combine all the original testing under one channel, since dividing it was confusing for the viewers. But how about doing augmented longer term testing, as part of EBG? That shows the real world relative cost advantages and disadvantages of owning different types of EVs. Since this is the type of pragmatic EV buyer information that a pragmatic audience would be interested in. Plus it is relatively unique Information.
I realize there's going to be a higher cost. But I was thinking part of that added cost could be offset, since vehicles are already being purchased and sold by the ABG channel. By just extending ownership long enough for you to do the additional testing. Also the validity of this concept could be tested by having Alex talk it up on ABG a few months ahead of time. And see if the viewership increases. But testing its true success will take much longer.
I am geeky enough to enjoy hearing about, EV Box Modular Charging or even better battery swapping. But I bet most viewers are looking for more pragmatic information. And I really want the EBG channel to be successful. So good luck in whatever direction it takes.

Your insights are not only well thought out but they're also heard. While the channel is in a transition phase I am in one as well and will have significantly more time starting in December. That time will be going towards ABG and EVBG content and while it may be different from what folks have been used to seeing the whole goal is that it will be valuable and worthwhile. If it hasn't been clear I'm open to feedback and am excited to keep growing and expanding the reach of EV Buyers Guide. -Travis

EX30 will not be affordable in many markets, with the base model starting at 53,700 in Canada, more than 50% higher than in the US. That is almost as expensive as a base Model 3.

@EVBuyersGuide agreed, but it's still not truly affordable, nor close to the price of a similar gas model. With our 5k National rebate, along with additional rebates available in some provinces, this should sell in reasonable numbers. I expect the price will decrease over the next few years with increased production volume and competition.

    • @nc3826

In real money that's only about 39k and Canadian models often get heat pumps as a standard feature.....
Plus it's strange how people disregard operating costs.... Especially in Canada where they often give away electricity for almost nothing....

And if it's purchased in the US it's not eligible for the federal rebate.... So it ends up cheaper in Canada, for most people...

@@nc3826 no, in real money it's 54k + taxes + fees, less whatever rebates are available, still very expensive for a small, base version of a RWD hatchback
