I saw this event live on TV/radio during a summer Live Aid party. We all thought Madonna was a joke until she blew us away with her 3 song set. After LIve Aid we all loved Madonna...haha
This was 1985. It is 2016. I wish EVERYONE would listen. "Don't judge a man 'til you've been standing in his shoes. You know that we're all so quick to look away, 'cause it's the easy thing to do. You know that what I say is true."
For me this was the highlight of live aid, I was 11, I wasn't interested in Queen or David Bowie, they were middle - aged men playing at rocks stars, when she played into the groove I totally flipped out! I had never heard anything so wonderful!
In my four decades of being a Madonna fan I never saw this in the set. Maybe on the day but I was 5 so forgive me for not remembering it. I vividly remember it being on my tv screen and watching with my older sister and I remember Queen.
yes she was very popular, but a lot of people hated her and thought she wouldn't last, she shut them up the next year with her masterpiece album "true blue" though :)
I think she was extremely nervous - which if you have any kind of heart you would understand under the circumstances. At the end of the song around the 5 min mark the last few verses, she finally hit her stride...but the haters will always hate. She was obviously very nervous. But she finally sang through those nerves. Some people will always hate, there has never been an artist or person that absolutely everyone loves....and her being so controversial throughout her career just begs for resistance but, she knew that. She always wanted to be someone that pushed the boundaries and made the under-dog celebrated. Whether the haters hate or not, she is THE GREATEST SELLING FEMALE IN HISTORY NOW. Guinness world records backs this up. Congrats M ~
treg1980 - Well I, as well as Millions of others disagree. And in my opinion, she did not sound awful during the Virgin Tour and Who's that girl Tour. But that is totally fine, that is your opinion.
***** Of course not.I've been a fan since 1986 as well. But i'm sorry, you don't know Madonna.I think you belong to Little Monsters.I'm sure Gags would love you
Kenny Fame exactly. Around this time the nude photos of her were released and that’s why she made the comment about not taking off her clothes. Everyone was talking about how hairy she was.
Yep, for those if us conscious then, Madonna OWNED 1985 with the movies, the Virgin Tour, Playboy and Penthouse magazines rushing to get their magazines on the newsstand first and the controversy, the cool Madonna Wannabees and marrying Sean Penn. Making the cover of People magazine an insane 6 times...1985 was her year.
6:05 Annnd, the London finale begins with Freddie Mercury and Brian May. In fact, at the moment at Wembley, they cut off the JFK audio where Madonna was *still* performing.
I remember this part of the day I went grocery shopping with my family & my little sister was singing Madonna in the grocery store who had the concert playing on the loudspeaker. I think this was around the time her nude photos were in Playboy she makes reference to not taking off her coat even though it was very hot that day.
Most of the people in Philly seems to be indifferent to the performanche of Madonna, she was not the universally known superstar of today, she was just at her first real live act. But sson, things would have changed... It is strange to see today this coldness of the crowd, knowing what Madonna is. This makes me laugh, in late 1984 I bought her Like a Virgin vinyl and still have it.
Here is a 1985 recording of Madonna singing in her Virgin Tour concert in Dallas. The audience was giving her loud cheers, screams and applause similar to what's been given to Michael Jackson. I love her singing. It's soulful, emotional, and beautiful. I actually think her voice fits more with R/B music, but she has a versatility Originally, her first demo was supposed to be R/B but the manager made Madonna and her DJ boyfriend change it to a pop style. It's ironic because her song was played on African American radio stations, and listeners thought she was African American I prefer her live vocals over her video vocals. Her ballad singing seems better than her faster stuff, and I believe it has to do with her being still while she's singing. She can sing and dance simultaneously well. She's an untrained singer, and so there is some rawness in her singing. Her original career choice was dancing. ruclips.net/video/EP5gdrfXjoI/видео.html
**...TO THE KIDS WHO WEREN'T THERE...** ...let's give scope on how HUGE Madge was, chart-wise July 1985, while she was twirlin' & swirlin' on the Live Aid stage...(cont.) - "Angel" was in the Top 5, on the Pop charts - "Crazy For You" hit #1 Pop, 2 months earlier (May 12, 1985) - "Gambler" was released in the UK, and getting Club play in the USA - The "Live A Virgin" Album was in the Top 5, & the 1983 "Madonna" Album, Top 30 - "Material Girl" & "Live A Virgin" (singles) were STILL selling & getting Radio play - The "Like a Virgin" Tour, was THE hottest 'Live' ticket in town _ "Into The Groove" was at #2 on the Dance charts, dropping from #1 (for 1 week)... ONE WEEK AGO (then), to "19" from Paul Hardcastle ....and, the "Nud-ie Pix!? ...so WHAT?!" controversy happened, THAT WEEK (0:19) .....Kids!? ...belieeeeeve me, she was BIG NEWS ....
I remember thinking I loved her hair dark and that's about it :) Such a cool event - and to the person who keeps saying that it was an "aids" benefit... LIVE AID! LOL. It was to raise $ and awareness of people starving in Africa. :)
@fastdarth this was the originally intended 1st single off True Blue (one of the first recorded, probably the 1st) thank god for Madonna that Live To Tell, Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, True Blue and La Isla Bonita came along...this is the 2nd weakest song off the True Blue Album after "Jimmy Jimmy"
This song was the last song on 'True Blue' and never made it as a single (which is to bad) because I love it! 'TB' had alot of singles/hits and seeing this seems strange that it never was. Maybe it was all the added effects of the 'TB' version that the record company didn't see it as a single.
...and in the U.S., Into The Groove was ONLY on the Desperately Seeking Susan soundtrack, but it got tons of radio play (as this old guy remembers it!)
Love this, but really think the 3 song set she did would have been much better with a big hit like Like A Virgin, Material Girl or evening Crazy For You! Big events like this are never a good time to pull out a new unheard track.
I hear what you are saying, but Holiday and this song's lyrics were more in-tune with the Live-Aid theme...and as far as unheard songs, Into The Groove was only part of the Desperately Seeking Susan soundtrack at that point (in the U.S.), but got tons of radio play.
This remains the only time she's ever sang this live. I wonder if it's coincidental that the themes in the song here echo the message that Live Aid was trying to get across. Which makes me wonder if she wrote it especially for the event or not?
Homely is quite a leap but ok. I remember this too & I remember thinking how genius, everybody is walking around trying to be Madonna "wanna-be's" and she goes and switches things up; "genius" and i was right. I don't know if you remember but Sean was backstage (her fiance) they got married soon after. I thought it was a great choice of judgement & those infamous pix just came out. Maybe if you understood P.R & the entertainment industry, you would have understood the move.
@elsoda at the time it wasn't. After all, Live Aid was about hunger in Africa & the world. And "Make Love not War" is not unimaginative for any generation.
Great lyrics but for some reason she could not hold the notes. Maybe because this was her 3rd song singing live and she used most of her voice in the previous ones. I enjoyed watching her regardless.
Yeah, she seemed out of breath on Into The Groove, but anything Madonna in 1985 was pure gold. She owned that year and I look back happily at seeing her from 6 rows out at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
@fastdarth this is the most idiotic question that i've ever seen on youtube. you think songs are created with a magic wand the same instant an album is released?
Trond Hansen If you notice at :56 she intro’s the name of the song. Something unnecessary for the first 2 songs, because they had already been released. This was a test run for the song nearly 1 year prior to True Blue’s June 30, 1986 release.
This was already a demo written for her next album which she was prepping for. The sentiment matched the cause so she decided to perform it. It was also a way to premier new music on this huge stage. Free press. It’s also why the vocal is so bad. She’s not used to singing it and therefore u sure and not well prepped.
Dumbest comment ever!!! Obviously they record the songs EARLIER then the album is released!!! Duh! Some songs end up on an album years after it's written, so 1 year difference is not much.. She was working on True Blue at this time, which takes weeks, months writing, recording, even when it's done it usually takes a month or two to be released...

Mike Paquin wow!! Apart from it being hot, it must have been an amazing day!
Watch the London bit near the end. We weren't interested and had a food fight lol x
I love Madonna's 80's song, it's so catchy in my ears.
Me too.
watch The Mystic - are we living here
The Mystic - pride & prejudice.
For me too
I'm listening in 2019!! Madonna crossed time boundaries!!

I’m discovering this June 12, 2022!!! #OrlandoStrong #LoveMakesTheWorldGoRound Lyrics still rings true to current state of the world.

"Don't judge a man 'til you've been standing in his shoes. You know that we're all so quick to look away, 'cause it's the easy thing to do. You know that what I say is true."
People hate her for singing it 10 years before Michael Jackson's "Earth Song". I guess her label wasn't happy with it as a single.

You set the bar low then lol
I love this song so much. I always hear twice when I put my vynil of True Blue.
wow!! she has sooo many hidden gems in her albums! a true queen
In my four decades of being a Madonna fan I never saw this in the set. Maybe on the day but I was 5 so forgive me for not remembering it. I vividly remember it being on my tv screen and watching with my older sister and I remember Queen.

Madonna performed at the major charity concerts: Live Aid (1985), Live 8 (2005) and Live Earth (2007)
yes she was very popular, but a lot of people hated her and thought she wouldn't last, she shut them up the next year with her masterpiece album "true blue" though :)
this is hard to watch mostly because you hear men saying "next" and "slut" as she talks at the start. awful.
photos of Madonna posing nude as an art model came out in Penthouse and Playboy shortly before the concert
pueden repetir el video de 1985 ahi en el mismo esenario por favor gracias
that song would later be on “True Blue” album!
She could teach some of today's artists a lesson on how to rock a stage without degrading yourself.
I remember watching this just so I could see her.
Amazing performance, she truly is incredible x
This wasn’t included on the DVD but wow! This was vibrant!
Thank you for preserving and sharing this piece of art.
Dancing when singing whoa!!! awesome !!!!
It sucks this is the only footage I can see her singing this song life it's one of her most underrated songs
It's a great song. It's so underrated. Some of her lesser known album tracks are just amazing
Antonio G. it wasn’t released yet

Funny how the fully dressed and stylish Madonna is somehow more attractive. It's not a knock on her other looks, but she looks frankly amazing.
I had those pants. And.... I love this! This is the year I graduated from high school!

@fastdarth this is the most idiotic question that i've ever seen on youtube. you think songs are created with a magic wand the same instant an album is released?
this video song was released in the vhs of that time? or how this filtlered?
How can this be a performance from 1985, when the song was included on M's album True Blue from 1986?
Trond Hansen If you notice at :56 she intro’s the name of the song. Something unnecessary for the first 2 songs, because they had already been released. This was a test run for the song nearly 1 year prior to True Blue’s June 30, 1986 release.

Because songs are conceived before an album is released ;)
There are quite a lot of bands and singers that play songs live in concerts, before they record it for their next album.
Saw this live on the day Live Aid happened in 85..and taped the whole thing on VHS, buddy
♥️♥️♥️😀👍

more than you get from her these days!
Chris...ALL of it was played live. what exactly are you talking about? It's not prerecorded...that's why it sounds so "rough".

Damn Philadelphia got shafted while the crowd at Wembly had the best preformance of all time.

She looked so good here, Pitty she wrecked her image with the Dreadfull True Blue look and album, sorry I think True Blue is her worst album, not a patch on Like a Virgin, Live to Tell is the exception.
@hvcshow and I really loved the album's title song.....beautiful love song

Live To Tell was the only solid track on True Blue along with papa Don't Preach and Open Your Heart, the rest is shite.
Ummm off key!!!
Too much dancing bitch.
I don't like some her lyrics
