You really can't talk about Evil Dead without someone bringing up Army of Darkness. That makes sense, as it is part of the series but it was named so differently to differentiate itself from the previous entries. Though I suppose it could have got away with calling itself "The Evil Deadites" and it would have been just as different. Ash goes back in time to fight the evil dead, and try to get back to his own time... and Sam Raimi is still directing, so Bruce Campbell is in for some shit.

The shot gun doesnt need to reload, unless its a visual prop. You should know that in the genere it was known as the movie gun. Never needing to reload or worry about ammo. Also its Bruce Campbell. Hes too cool to worry about ammo.

The movie knows exactly what it is and doesn't take itself seriously, at all. It's like you sitting at a table with your buddies, everyone is drunk and stoned af and you just come up with these ridiculous scenes trying to outdo each other. From that perspective, tearing it apart isn't really fun. That only works when a movie infact takes itself seriously.
I always thought the reason he used his belt on the chain was to reach higher when he held onto the chain. You know, so he could rise out of the pit quicker and avoid the spikes
And maybe because his hand was wet and it's a lot easier to hold on to leather than metal chain. Especially with only one hand supporting his entire weight +chainsaw.
I always figured S Mart was intended as a joke, like Mega-Lo Mart in King of the Hill.

You know I actually did see the alternate ending once. He drinks the potion but takes one drop too many and ends up in a wasteland future though there were no deadites.

The possession part, I've always chalked that up to demon's doing demon stuff which then if you look into demons, each civilization had very simular "Types" of demons. But, Long story short, According to Lore, demons are strongest when their prey is at their weakest. Weak as in mentally exhausted as if the persons will is broken. There are demons that play with peoples minds that make them think constantly of their worse fears which raises anxiety and stress which fuels demons. Even in the first two movies, and the T.V show, "Deadites" are people who's souls are sent to hell and replaced with Said demon, so technically they are dead vessels that Demons use for their own purposes, but demons are shifty and can let the Deadites souls back in, in order to Trick others...
That's a lot of breakdown for a franchise that gives no fucks for rules and does wherever it wants in every iteration.
Old English sounded more like Saxon. Early Modern English (Shakespeare Era) sounded more like modern American English. A contemporary American time traveler going back to medieval England would be unable to have a conversation with anyone they met.

While American English, particularly the Southern dialects have allot in common with older modern English, think Shakespeare's time, to about the Napoleonic wars... not king Arthur.
The deadite said, "it's the one in the cart we want," not "car" - "cart". Also the words "car", "van", "caravan", "wagon" et cetera, were all around long before internal combustion engines were.
I thought all 3 were quality. Hell of an achievement considering the huge differences in tone from 1 to 3. Ash v Evil is great to.

In Italy there's the happy ending and the post apocalypse ending is in the special features among the deleted scenes.

Actually the version of Army of Darkness i've always watched on VHS and on TV in Poland ALWAYS had the apocalyptic future ending. In fact, i only got to know that there even was an S-mart ending just recently :)
Btw the apocalyptic future ending is by far the better one.
The s-mart one was more entertaining, but the apocalyptic one is more interesting from a story telling point.

I saw this movie when it firat came out and everyone was hooting and shouting badasseries when Ash brandished that shotgun!
Old English sounded like a sort of like someone with a Bad German accent. There are actually people living near (I think) Friesland, on the Danish coast, who have a similar language to Old English. So much so that you can actually have a full on conversation with them in Old English. Eddie Izzard did in his Discovery Channel (UK) documentary series Mongrel Nation. If it was the 13th Centaury there would have been several languages spoken in the multiple kingdoms that made up England. The languages varied greatly, so much so that if you travelled just 100 miles you would most likely her a completely different language. That is until one King unified England under "One Banner" and started to create a common language. If the people that captured Ash were near enough to Scotland for one of their tribes to raid their lands then I would think that they would have spoken something like "Common Brittonic" which was a Celtic language in the far north of England. Henry's people would have possibly spoken Brittonic as well. Or they could have also spoken anything from Goidelic, Pictish, Scots or Norn. At present we have 6 languages in "Great Britton" English, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Irish Gaelic, Cornish and Old Norwegian in the Orkney Islands (Off the North Eastern coast of Scotland).

To go with the D&D reference,Possession is a touch attack that requires a free action and an unused spell slot. The Dead Spirit makes a melee attack that the player can dodge or save against,using the highest save stat that can be applied to the situation. Hit with a board? Fort or Reflex.

The alternate ending is including in the extended cut of the movie. Ash looks like Rip Van Winkle with a long beard with a burning cityscape behind him.

I don't think that having the Necronomicon bite your hand is the same as having a Deadite bite your hand, and that is why I think Ash's hand wasn't infected. I also don't think Bad Ash making out with Shelia is what turned her. Lastly to say I love this movie would be an understatement, I would give it a 4.5 out of 5 I'm just not going to attack you verbally for not agreeing with me on the score. Thank you for the video. =)

Movies like Army of Darkness and Career Opportunities really gave me a warped perspective of what retail life would be like. I couldn't tell you how often I wished for a hell-portal to open up and start spitting out demons while working retail.

Huh. I had no idea that Raimi had the idea for that ending here. Suddenly that scene from Ash vs. Evil Dead the tv series makes a lot more se-, well, ok it doesn't make any sense really, but it feels like it comes out of left field just a bit more gently now.
Decker if you wanna know why they reenacted the intros. It's because oddly enough the movie producers couldn't get copyright for the previous movies so they tried to remake them in previous scenes.
You say Ash had a chemistry textbook in his car, quote, “for some reason.” I thought the reason was that in the first movie they were a bunch of college students going to a cabin for a getaway. Granted, the group didn’t seem like the type to spend their down time wisely and study a bit, but it does explain the presence of a college textbook.
Man, what you call "alternate ending" is actually a regular one in Europe. At least for what I know, although there are two versions existing in our market.
I watched Evil Dead 2 as a 7-8 years old boy and was blown away by the fact you can actually end a movie with opening to another part of the story. A few years later I watched Army of Darkness, the cut you review here and remember just a few laughs, yet the ending has been completely wiped out of my brain!
Later, as older teenager, I watched the proper version, ending in the future, and was blown away again by how "Ashy" this ending is! How perfect for Evil Dead!
Another few years later my brother reminded me that we watched the other ending, and I still can't remember it from that time.
Watched the "friendly" cut later, know both endings, still can't remember watching S-Mart finale as teenager.
And it was a movie me, my brother and my two cousins were waiting for a few years after watching ED2!
Anyway - look it up. The original Raimi's ending cut is about 1 hour and 36 minutes running time, and the alternate (your) cut closes around 1 hour 20mins. As far as I know Sam Raimi was pissed off by being forced to change the ending and cut tons of tiny details, cutaways, resulting in much shorter film.
That's why all other versions of the movie are better ! Except I prefer the International Cut above all of them!

And to clear this one up (and a few things I forgot to mention from the Evil Dead 2 review)....
1) Bobby Jo did NOT eat the eye. It goes in her mouth, and you can hear her spit it out.
2) As I said in the comments on the Evil Dead 2 review, the evil can only possess you if you are openly wounded.
3) The reason why the evil can show up during the day and possess people at will in Army of Darkness is because the evil was much stronger back in the medieval times. That's why it has full armies at it's command instead of limited to possessing a few horny college students here and there.
4) The deadite says "it's the one in the CART we want, get him", not car.

I grew up with this movie as a child and never knew it was the third movie in a trilogy due to the title until adulthood. It's actually a great movie intended for adults for children to watch. The haunted house level randomness from the mini Ash's to the tombstone rockets, Ash's stretched jaw, the skeleton stooges and their pension for gizzards. The score even. I appreciate the original two movies for what they are, but this movie will always have a special place in my heart.

when you notice that an old horror movie with dark comedy elements potrays medieval clothing and armor way more accuratley than anything that ever came out the History channel......
Ian was excellent as Palpatine in Clone Wars, which itself was excellent (since it does a better job of developing the characters and the war and it's mythology).
7:14 The Sucker Punch bladed pistol from Borderlands Enhanced is a reference to that scene.
8:11 Nothing he says about the boomstick is true, though. It's an IGA/Stoeger Coach Gun with standard blued finish, Brazilian hardwood stock, and double triggers. It's a budget gun, definitely *not* "top-of-the-line." And it was made in Brazil, not Michigan. In ED2, he uses a Stevens, probably a model 311. In TED, he uses some generic single-shot 20-gauge that Bruce bought at a local K-Mart.
Maybe in Army of Darkness 2 he will have robot hand that transforms into a chainsaw.

When I was a child, there was a department store in my small home town in Kentucky called S-mart. This was about 45 years ago, and I don't think it was a chain store.
Decker complaining about him not reloading or anything else like how he shot the sword without hitting Arthur is just Decker not realizing how awesome and amazing Ash is. Ash reloads too fast for the eye to see and his accuracy makes Deadshot look like a cross eyed stooge
Strange. I remember watching it on the TV multiple times and it had post-apocalyptic ending. Didn't know the happy one exists.
The deadites already scourging the land are just the basic infantry. With the unleashing of the next wave new types are unlocked: Skirmisher, Scout, Berserker, Calvary and movie critic.
On the DVD I have it has both endings. in fact, the first time I watched the film,I'm pretty sure it just had the future ending.

The accent thing can be explained by if you travel for 2/3 hours across England you'll encounter several completely different accents
Also, the apocalyptic ending was all we got in the UK! The S-Mart ending was a "deleted scene" after the credits on the VHS

It's also the alternate ending to Army Of Darkness. In that version of the ending, he's counting the amount of drops he swallows from the potion but gets distracted by a noise, causing him to lose count and taking 1 drop too many. he then wakes up in an apocalyptic future where all the world's landmarks can be seen falling in to ruin and buried in sand, and Ash screams, "Oh no, I slept too long!"
The finale in season 3 of Ash Vs. Evil Dead is somewhat similar, but was done to finalise the story of Ash since season 4 got cancelled. Originally the end of season 3 was going to set the series up for Ash fighting the dark ones in season 4, but due to season 3's declining viewership, the ending was changed to the apocalyptic one to complete Ash's storyline.
Sam Raimi has expressed interest in doing more Evil Dead stuff, with a VR Ash Vs. Evil Dead game supposedly in development, and there have been rumours that the original Evil Dead and the reboot movie may have some kind of cross-over in the future, but Bruce Campbell has expressed that he's done playing the part of Ash outside of voice work for video games and things, so it's unlikely we'll see him in a fully-fledged Evil Dead movie or T.V series again. However, the ending of season 3 does open up the possibility for his daughter to become the new 'chosen one' and start a whole new storyline, which could be pretty fun.
The MPAA said it had to be rated R because evil Dead 2 was too gory.....
And Army Of Darkness is a action horror comedy and is still Evil Dead 3......

The English version has different scenes, the London Bridge is gone from the theatrical version but in the directors cut and in the graveyard he get punched in the nuts then breaks off a deadites arm the s_mart ending is slightly shorter to remove some shots, the sky TV version has evil Ash ripping Sheila's dress down, no you don't see anything, shame but true, I think it's on the region 3 dvd, other than that it's really good

Army of Darkness was my childhood favorite. I will always have the image of Bruce face being sucked into the book.
First movie (The actual FIRST movie) was pure horror still gives me shivers...

There’s less scares here and more emphasis on within and comedy. It's true many fans were shocked at the tonal flip the film took, and many audiences were confused with Ash’s characterization. A box office bomb but it wasn't a total disaster as Raimi never misses a chance to make things grotesque or fun for that matter.
Bruce Campbell is completely embracing the campiness of the series at this point.
I’m glad we got the tv show later, video games, a remake and the newest installment coming this April.

the s-mart ending was only made because universal was hounding raimi to make an ending so there could be sequels, the European release was ended with the future ash as a default ending but I do recall the s-mart version being at the end credits but I may be wrong there.
Never watched any of these movies. Came here because around 8 years ago I used to play a game by this name on the very first Ipad when I was a child. Loved that game so much, glad to see it has some backstory as a movie franchise.
We did get a sci-fi future Deadite story, actually. It's called Jason X.

Hey Decker, I'm from England and when I was younger and my Dad introduced me to the Evil Dead Movies, The Army of Darkness Alternate Ending you mentioned is the version I watched, until a year or two ago I thought my version was the original............ :( Haha
Army Of Darkness was the first of the series that I actually caught in a theater... and the most disappointing. I grew to love it for what it is over the years, but that evil fanboy that was awoken in me when me and my best friends witnessed the first one for one of our "Bad Movie Nights" so long ago, saw every pulled punch and cringed at every bad one-liner.
The "Boomstick" Edition DVD has the theatrical cut that we got here in theaters, with the original ending as a bonus, and a second disc with a director's cut that's 15 min. longer.
There were so many DVD releases of parts 2 & 3, it took me forever to figure out which to get to replace my old VHS copies from the 80's. I fell for the "Book Of The Dead" version of part 2, which came in a box shaped like the Necronomicon, but it was made of cheap foam and immediately began ripping every time I pulled it off the shelf.
