    I haven't been since 2019 either,
I remember going to a Denny's and it was the only time over there where I didn't feel they deserved a tip.
Food was terrible and service just as bad. My mum paid a tip cos I think she was scared they would kick off

May be we should introduce it here and see if the service we get improves. It's like on the cruise you have to tip but on the TUI ones it's all in your holiday price and that works well for me

Nice one Mr H, like you I tipped when I went to America.
The last time I was in the UK at some restaurant's they went thru a Gratuity payment on their swipe card machine! So its slowly spreading to the UK. So being English I dont like it but as you said when in Rome.
I think It's up to the employer to pay a fair wage IMHO but if you ask them I bet they earn more than the minimum wage when they add the tips in.
In short if I have $100 in my pocket I can only eat/drink $80??.
I think we have killed the tipping debate now. Enjoy you last days of your holiday i hope Mrs H and Toby J have enjoyed it. themselves

It's a fair point you have made Mr H to be honest , I mentioned about Iceland yesterday we spend some time over there and Prague and its culture not to tip and they can get offended if you try and do , Iceland does has a very large wage structure though , Czech Republic is another country where its frowned upon but their wages are very low in comparison to Iceland, hope you are having a great time

Got chased out of a restaurant in NYC for not tipping, we was young traveller's and had no idea it was a thing.. We rightly provided a tip! I believe some places they literally only get tips as a wage!

We tip 20% always. Went to Florida last week and the service was fantastic. If you don’t like it, you really shouldn’t go there on hol. I agree with Mr H. The only question I have is dont the waiters now get a phenomenal wage? They must serve between 5 and 20 ppl an hour. 15% of an average meal must be minimum 5-10 dollars x 5-20 customers that hour plus a small actual wage. You’d think that’d make it a really desirable job

That's a fair point what you say, also if you're going out for a meal it's a luxury you either have enough money for or you don't... and it's fair to say if you can afford the meal out in the first place then you can afford to tip the staff
I think it's also fair to say that if people who don't live there don't like the system then there's always the option to go elsewhere on holidays and if the people who lived there didn't like it they would change it themselves.
It might potentially be a thing that benefits someone on a low wage because they can get paid more without having to pay tax on that extra, when the extra is due to the level of service received.
Would totally be helpful to have some kind of ball park figure of what's socially acceptable to offer as a tip so we actually know and then don't get embarrassed

Roy you only getting good service because they want you to tip them, I wonder if that lad who was working in the chippy and said he was from Wigan really was or was he just after a bigger tip.
In a lot of bars and restaurants overseas they bring you receipt and change on a plate (Well they did before we all went Credit card) and I some times left the lot or took out the high value coins and left the rest for them.
A lot of places in Asia don't expect tips, in Singapore the strict government put a ban of tipping, and the girls working in the hotel bars had to wear a little badge saying please don't tip me.

I've no trouble with tipping but if they get the order wrong or bad service there's no way I will tip.

I believe the federal minimum is something like $2 so tipping in those states is more appropriate

A lot of US employees in roles which get tips don't want a situation of higher minimum wage and no tipping as they'd earn way less.

If an employee wants more 'food on the table', he/she should look for a job which is better paid, not expect the customer to help him out with his income. Quality of service should not be dependent on the degree or existence of tipping. Don't go there, you won't have the problem!

This world drives me mad, so a waiter, hairdresser, taxi driver gets tipped, but a bus driver, factory worker, or someone working in a pork butchers doesn't. You don't tip the bus driver because your worried he might crash the bus if you don't.
