To this day I still say Lupe is one of, if not the greatest lyricist of the new millennium. But I went through a phase where I HATED him. And that was during the whole Lasers situation. Fans would jock him SO hard and literally worship him (until Kendrick Lamar cam and it switched up, which really shows how much of loyal fans they are). Lupe is seriously over-pretentious, and he is going through some harsh realities. He needs to humble himself. I will always love his classics though

I remember being in eighth grade when Food and Liquor was released and being so captivated and excited that their was a new rapper on the scene who seemed like an average guy who wasn't about all the POP and glamour, but instead concerned on content and dignity of the genre of hip hop. At this point, I'm unsure if I can remain a fan of his any longer.

It seems pretty clear Lupe's vision was to reach as many people as possible with his messages to help better the world, but unfortunately he became part of the status quo and watered down his ideology as a result. The revolutionaries who brought the most change are not remembered or known. Behind every revolutionary leader were the revolutionaries who died on the frontlines with no one to remember their names except those closest to them, but if not for their sacrifices, the movements wouldn't have been movements at all.
This isn't to say people should give up their lives for a movement. It's the opposite extreme of the spectrum, and it's to say that trying to work through the system will only make you become part of it. You may change a few things here and there, but ultimately, you must sacrifice in order to change the system.
Fred Hampton was assassinated at 21, but he and the rest of the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was the reason why free-lunch became a nationwide program in the US. Their breakfast program is what started it, and many of them were killed by the feds. Most people don't even know the name Fred Hampton, let alone the Panthers who worked alongside him. He lived in poverty until his death, because every penny he had went towards the Party and the people.

Y’all sound crazy as hell over Lasers, there was a 3 year hiatus between the Cool and Lasers, fans had to protest for the album to drop, Lupe dropped singles Im Beamin and Shining Down both didn’t end up on Lasers, looking at the picture it seems to me the album wasn’t dropping because of the disputes then the fans went crazy for the album and so Lupe buckles seeing how bad the fans wanted it and dropped something that he wasn’t 100% behind, something that had been chopped up from his original vision, as fans we begged for something that was being argued over to be rushed but then tore the man down for releasing it, it’s his worse album true but I appreciate hearing an artist over different sounds and it just makes Lupes discography more diverse in my opinion, you got pop beats like Show Goes On, I don’t wanna care right now, Break the Chain, Till I get there, Beautiful Lasers for different moods, my ex’s favorite song for a min was Never Forget You with John Legend some love type shit, mainstream love shit with Trey Songz and then All Black Everything + Words I Never Said which are some creative ass pieces, maybe some of y’all like hearing the same hip hop over and over again if that’s so then don’t listen to those projects but Lupe also does have 4 albums and tons of mixtape material where he spits shit that’s publicly acclaimed that y’all like, I mainly like that same type hip hop but I also like to change it up sometimes and Lupe provides both outlets

@Pomaori I didn't say he "sold out." That was the other guys. Feel free to bring that up to them, because I don't necessarily agree with that statement either. If he wants to do house music because he likes it, then it's not selling out. It's doing what he likes. Far as the Kick Push thing, I see your point. Just don't agree with it, but don't really care to go back and forth about it. Later.

Finally, been waiting on this! Im sharing thoughts with y'all..i don't listen to his music for the beats but for his lyrics. But then again, you have to remember this is a mixtape, we all should expect Lupe Fiasco to go back to his traditional production on Fruit & Liquor 2.

This mixtape was a pure masterpiece, to me it took off after the third track, and it definitely had a classic feel to it that lasers didn't have. Lasers got played out to me, I mean I can't even play it anymore while this one got better with each listen. Definitely one of the greatest mixtapes ever to come out, I promise that.

Reezy Does It how do you know he’s a Stan? Even stans didn’t grow up with Lupe we became Stans because we enjoyed his music, so writing off a Stans statement as only biased is short minded, or a favorable statement as being Stan, every statement from any individual should be taken only as word value with a balance of understanding who’s making the statement, and the fact that he said Lasers was played out shows a willingness to not be biased

I think sellout is the wrong word here, he still has alot of depth in his lyrics, but i do hate his new sound, but at least his lyrics mean something as opposed to certain artists. But I'd like him to get back to his old sound as well.

Lupe shines with his lyricism & His content is what drew me to his music & is pretty much going to keep me listening to him. For me..Lasers was 25/75 for me..its only a few songs that I liked and the others just wasnt doin it for me. I do think that Atlantic did somethin to Lasers to steer it cuz songs did get taken off that he used on stepping Lasers tour. FOTP, ya he spit over a dub beat but for me, he lyricism saves his songs nowadays & thats what I focus on with him.

    1. Lupe's sound is probably his own choosing but it was Atlantic that made him do songs like I don't wanna care and out of my head. Not the sound, just the song itself.
    2. He did/does skateboard avidly. There's an interview video with him ollying over a trashcan, and if I recall he does some skating in the Daydreamin' music video

i think i speak for a lot of people when i say that there is slight difference between today's radio electro-pop and the beats that Lupe used on this mixtape. Artists such as Justice and M83, that were sampled on FOTP, might sound drastically different to the soulful instrumentals that were all over The Cool, but it doesn't mean they should be lumped in the same category as the shit on lasers.

I felt the same way you guys do now when Kanye's bubble burst for me back in 2007. I had had suspicions about his "intelligence" when lyrically, Late Registration didn't hold up like College Dropout--it felt deprived of the wit, sarcasm, and self-awareness that made Kanye the 21st century hip-hop savior in the first place. In my heart of hearts, I had hoped that Kanye was a Lupe--driven to create endlessly complex lyrics and ideas, but I guess Lupe wasn't "Lupe" either.

You are correct, they were released on the deluxe copy of Lasers. Both songs were well received in hip hop circles as hip hop songs. Lupe said he liked the music for lasers, he didn't like the politics behind the songs. He was mad that the label forced The Show Goes On, on him. Most of that stuff is the direction he was going anyway. Let's not forget Solar Midnite.

I was thinking about this lately, and thought of this. Put yourself in Lupe's position. You want to get your message to the masses through your music, and the best way he could incorporate his message into his music AND reach the masses would be to commercialize his music. So, by making it more radio friendly, he's making more people hear his message in his lyrics. Not saying this is what Lupe meant to do, but it's something to think about.

I think C-Town misunderstood. Lupe had recorded a different album originally with different songs. The vocals WEREN'T pasted onto pop production, the songs on Lasers were new ones, after the label denied what he originally wanted to put out. If I'm not mistaken, "I'm Beamin'" and "Shining Down" were supposed to be on the album (I might be wrong there tho).
But I agree that I think when Lupe saw the success of LASERS, it went to his head, and he decided to run with that sound.

  • @chaosinorderrr

I agree with everyone about the mixtape. I excepted that LASERS was corporate driven, but with a mixtape Lupe had complete creative control of it and he still put out a electro/techno sounding mixtape. I thought he was going back to that F&L and The Cool sound on this tape, but he didn't. I had no problem with the lyrics, it was just the sound that threw me off. I hope, Oh I hope F&L 2 doesn't sound like this. He said F&L 2 will be a "core lupe fan" album, let's hope he doesn't trick us again.

Lupe been said he had other genres of music he was interested in so it shouldnt come as a surprise that the album sounded like somethin Tinie Tempah would do. I understand though cuz u guys seem to not really care for Rock Hop or dubstep rap but by him doing that, he's getting a larger audience to educate oppose to just having some of the black community rockin with u. Sometimes u gotta branch out & Lupe used his interest in dubstep to do so

Idk what inspired this whole sound shift hes going through but he obviously doesn't realize that hes best when he sticks to the type of sound he had on his first two albums. To all the people stuck on the Kick Push comment (which wasn't even the meat of the convo) the point of the matter was I feel Lupe did that to jump on a topic area that was relatively untouched. Whether or not he skated was unimportant. The point was the song was MAD corny. It was a weak story about a kid skating that had absolutely no depth. And the fact that this was the first single was suspect. Why none of the other songs? It's because what other black MC at the time was making skate songs?

  • @BrothaAbstract

So glad you guys are taking Lupe to task. I really dig the dude, but I haven't bought anything past The Cool... and even that album with having "Superstar" as the single was a little sketchy... I'm cool vibing with his old stuff, though.

This mixtape should be called Enemy Of The Fans- Friend of the Techno.

Totally agree with you guys it is really frustrating because that Lupe from the work that made me like him is missing... But S/O to all you guys, just recently came across your videos and I am a fan of what y'all do

@n3phlim but dumb it down was back in '07. Nobody is denying he is lyrically on point, but the sounds that he is conveying in his projects recently (Lasers and now FOTP). It's not because Atlanta forced him, It's obvious this is what he wants to do sonically now.

Really generalized opinions, but logical. All-in-all I thought this was pretty on point, people who love these releases are going to love them because they're hipsters or something and didn't know lupe before, they just knew that he was good before because people who appreciate the music know its good, so they will come to you acting like this shit is hot when they probably only listened to a track or two.

I was a huge Lupe fan up until Lasers came out. I was ignoring this tape since i'm tired of being disappointed by him but I gave it a try and ended up putting that shit in the recycle bin. After watching this conversation I already lost my hopes that food & liqour 2 is gonna drop as he said it was.

@mrenon23 How come? Hes clearly making a statement through his lyrics. You have to respect that it's a MIXTAPE, not an album, the F&L 2 will be out, we all should expect the typical hip hop production.
