My Prodigy Boat Review

- After years of searching and reviewing several boat manufactures for my dream waterfowl hunting boat, I ultimately opted for a custom #ProdigyBoat with #MudBuddy Motor. This video highlights many of the features that I was looking for and found in a new Prodigy #DuckBoat.
Boat:
It comes with a flat floor to avoid stumbling around in the boat with a loaded firearm. The storage options are plentiful including a front hatch for life jackets, spot lights, folding chairs, etc. Built tough with .125 marine grade aluminum that includes longitudinal bracing. Love the custom drop deck fishtail which provides ease of access getting in/out of the boat both in and out of the water. Pointed bow with short v-rake and ice breaker. Flat bottom for shallow water. Interior lighting in the hull and storage boxes. Hydro-turf on all flat surfaces provides non-slip traction with wet boots. Removable gas tank located under the bow to help displace the weight. 8" catwalks with cup holders to provide a complete blind experience. Lightweight shelf to keep guns, poles, lights, etc. off the floor. Matching camo paint job on the hull and motor. Tapered corners without hard points. Added a DIY boat blind with the Shaggy Blind material and camo pattern wind blocker fabric for concealment.
Motor:
The 40hp Mud Buddy motor comes with a 3 year manufacturer warranty. The BPS Q Muffler with K&N air filter adds increased horse power. The momentary forward button on the motor will be great for picking up decoys. HDR includes reverse. EFI provides easy startup in even cold temperatures without the hassle of choking.
Trailer:
Prodigy uses a galvanized Tennessee Trailer. Includes the swing tongue for shortened storage requirements. Total length from back of motor to front of trailer is 20 feet with the 17 foot boat. Includes a back step for easy access into the boat.
Blind:
The blind is a DIY blind made to custom fit the contour of the boat. Started with some EMT conduit and a pipe bender, bought some fittings on Amazon, added the 500D Cordura Nylon - Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Blades fabric for wind block, and finished with the Shaggy Blind material. I think it turned out really well with the double bar frame to add extra room inside.

Did you have a bar mounted at the bottom to hold the blind down permanently so it won't pull up?? It looks like it. Clean blind setup. I'm gonna attempt to copy yours!!! Can you give me a few snap pics ect of your blind build so I can use as a reference guide?

I should have taken more pictures/videos of the construction process, but I'd be happy to take any pics now or answer any other questions you might have.
@@dougjennings533 If you could do a quick video about how you built that blind (i.e.- mounting points, how the double bars work, tensioning, and storage) that would be fantastic. I have basically the same Prodigy, but haven't found a decent blind design to start with. I really like the way you have it set up. Plenty of extra room and that is a perfect placement for the dog to mark and launch from while still having good cover.
Hey doug good review brother. I'm also looking at this company to build my next boat. Good point with the front lights glad you pointed that out. I'm going to have a 1860 built very similar to.your design and floor plan. How much your boat run you. Have to ever owned a gator tail or prodrive mud motor?. Do you fishing out your hunting boat? I'm looking to fish and hunt the marsh and swampland

Prodigy makes a great boat hands down. My only issue is that it’s under powered even running a hdr50. I have the 1854 and it doesn’t like too much weight. I’ve had it re geared and it helped but still lacking power.
I'm surprised to hear your setup doesn't scream. The Prodigy isn't the lightest boat, but it's built tough. Out of curiosity, what kind of speeds are you getting? How many guys are you running in the boat...how much extra weight? What prop are you using? When my Prodigy was delivered it came with the three blade Raptor prop. I wasn't thrilled with the hull shots and getting up on plane. A guy at Mud Buddy suggested the two blade and I couldn't believe the difference.
Hey Doug, great video and nice boat. Is this boat a part of a certain series of prodigy or is it just a 1751 basic Model?
Thanks! They called it the Marsh Tuff boat, but basically you tell them what you want and they build it to your exact specifications. Totally custom. For example, the Drop Deck Fish Tail was an idea I had and they built it even though they had never done it before. I was impressed how well it turned out. 1751 is really just the size...17 feet long and 51 inches wide.
Any chance for a video on your blind build??
I've had a few requests for a blind video. I still need to do that. I should have done it during the construction phase as it would have been much more detailed. Hopefully a final overview with explanation will be better than nothing.
@@dougjennings533 still pictures would work.....hell even on your FB page if your on there. I built a blind somewhat like yours from the poles that Chad sells and it was great BUT I like the roomy openness that the double poles you have .

Hey Doug really liked the video and info. Question what type and where did you get the bracket used on your blind to connect the bars on the blind at the front and rear that hold top rail bar and bottom rail bar. There are 4 of them it looks like, and does it slide up and down to make to where you can make the top of the blind taller? also how long are the side rails on the blind. I can only find 10' section whish they made longer to 16' to have one piece with no break in bar so it would be more sturdy. I have Seaark 1652
I found the brackets on Amazon. Just search for "Mxeol Boat Bimini hardware set".
The frame is just over 16 feet long. I used two pieces for each side, but connected them by using a metal insert that I hammered in for a tight fit. The height isn't adjustable. The middle bar just gives extra space in the blind.

Awesome boat. Having them build me one coming up soon. How do you keep your blind held up in position? Vertical bars or just straps across the opening at the top?
I use a Nite ize Cam Jam cord tightener on the top. It works well to make the blind a tight, but I have a problem with them freezing up in cold temperatures. I've thought about using vertical bars to avoid having to step over or duck under the rope when I need to get out of the boat. I don't think it would be as sturdy, but I just haven't tried it.
@@dougjennings533 thanx for the reply. So I guess you just stand up through the opening to shoot... you don't throw it down to shoot out front?
@@jacobhall6149 Correct. I have two cords keeping the blind up (one in the front and another in the rear). Just stand up to shoot.

Thanks. I've heard good things about Havoc. I bet you'll love it. I thought about making a video before I started building the blind that showed the build process, but I wasn't sure how it would turn out. It turned out better than I even hoped which made me regret not making the video. Are you going to try building your own too? If it will help, I can take some more detailed video.
Please Dax do a lil video on your blind!! Having my second Prodigy built in a few months and looking to do a blind just like that! Did you cover the material with the SHAGGY material??
i have a 1754 with the 5000 aniversary edition mudbuddy . its very disappointing that i cant get on plane with three men in it . i dont know what to do i already payed damn near 40000 dollars and it doesnt work unless i have 2 or less people
Is this a new rig? What prop are you using?
yes and the prop is a raptor three blade
Also, another thought is where are you located? Being in Utah Mud Buddy swapped out the sprocket suggesting it would run better at a higher elevation. Given that Prodigy is at sea level, my understanding is they configure the motors they sell for the low elevation.
My rig was delivered with the Raptor three blade too. Like you I was disappointed with the performance. I didn't want to admit it after paying so much, but to be honest I had buyers remorse. The hole shots were terrible and even worse with a load. Lucky for you there is an easy fix. One of the smart guys at Mud Buddy also suggested replacing the blade even though it was new. He suggested the Big Blade which only has two blades. The difference was night and day. In my opinion, the Raptor sucks and Mud Buddy isn't doing themselves any favors by delivering motors with it. One of my hunting buddy's who has also used the Big Blade swears by the Roost blade. I haven't tried it, but I'm going to try it this year. Either way, get rid of the Raptor Three Blade! Please let me know your experience. With your boat/motor, you should be cruising.

Where do you hunt the dog from? Up on the front deck or the rear??
He's better positioned on the front deck, but he'll usually always exit and enter the boat in the rear using the fish tail step.
I hunt that spot all the time have probably run across each other out there it's been tuff on the bigger boats out there this year have you been able to launch yours I have had to manhandle my boat out there this year and it's just a 14 foot Lowe once I get it off the trailer I'm good as long as I stay away from the mud bar's
I haven't even tried launching out there this year. I keep hearing that the airboats are getting stuck. Can you really get passed the beaver damn?
@@dougjennings533 I have to get a run at it and slide over I have only been out there a couple of times since the water has come up a little bit been hunting public mostly this year

What is the cell phone mount you have on the grab bar?
It's the Bracketron TekGrip Phone Holder Clamp Mount. I ordered it from Cabela's, but I can't find it on their site anymore. There are similar mounts online if you search for claw phone mount.
Where at in Utah did you buy the boat?
There isn't a dealer in Utah or any other place that I'm aware of other than their factory headquarterd in Georgia. Worked out all the customizations online and purchased directly from Prodigy, then had it shipped to Utah by a third party trucking company.
How does your boat do in the ice?
Compared to my last boat which had a flat front, this boat is better. The flat front didn't really break the ice too well, but would rather try to ride on top. The Prodigy V-rake with 1" Ice Breaker does split/break the ice better, but the chunks of ice do interfere with the prop which would be a problem with any prop type motor. I don't typically take the boat out once the ice gets thicker than an inch or so.

It's a custom home made bind.
Did you get 21” or 24” sides?

So I borrowed an older model Prodigy and went into a tight turn and it broke free and slid into a mangrove. The Gator Trax I use doesn't do that. So my question is have you tested it yet on a really sharp, fast curve? I really love the look of the Prodigy more than the Gatr Trax, but if they can't turn as sharp then I might have to look elsewhere.
Before the Prodigy I had a 14' Landau flat bottom boat with a 23 HP long tail motor. It had a noticably better turning radius either because of the shorter length, it simply didn't go as fast, or because it had external longitudinal ribs on the underside. My Prodigy has a true flat bottom and does glide more when turning at faster speeds. That would be a good question to ask Prodigy if they can crimp some subtle ribs on the bottom for better turning performance.
