The Assam-type home was invented in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 1897, which flattened brick-and-mortar homes across large swathes of Assam and Meghalaya-then one state under British rule. A group of British and Japanese seismologists led by Fusakichi Omori, an eminent expert from the Imperial University of Japan, collaborated with engineers to create quake resistant designs. These structures were characterized by the use of local chira stone (laterite) or brick for the base; walls in ikora reed and bamboo, fixed in a frame and plastered with mud and cow dung; and timber load-bearing beams to hold up tin or corrugated galvanized-iron roofing. The idea was to create flexible structures. Other adopted design elements included high false ceilings, long verandas, large bay windows, and open spaces both at the front and rear.It turned out that Assam-type has nothing to do with architecture from Assam. But it is an interesting kind of typology that not many people in this country know about.
Sadly, many of these Assam type buildings are giving way to RCC framed structured ones, which can be made multistoreyed and the materials for construction are readily available!
This video is an attempt to record few of the Assam type homes and other buildings before they too are swallowed by the human greed of growth !
